Why do we go crazy when someone posts unsubstantiated re-posts?
There is a thread out there claiming that Sen. Kennedy is not going to stand up. The origin of the claim is another post on another forum by an unknown poster claiming to have called the senator's office. Now, I don't know about you guys, but I have a problem with these types of posts.

I could easily post that I called Kerry's office and the person at the other end corrected me when I called him Senator Kerry. I could easily lie and say "they said call him Pres. Elect Kerry". This would start all sorts of rumbles and all you guys would have is my word that the call happened.

The other post is someone's post that they called an office and spoke to someone. The call could have happened, but, they could have spoken to the janitor or a repug intern that happened to have grabbed the phone while there delivering something.

We need to (1) remember that Conyers has yet to send his report to all of congress, and , (2) focus on impressing upon our reps the importance of taking a stand against election fraud.

This was not the weed's election or Kerry's election, it was our election. They stole it from us, we were voting to elect a person to hold our office, to represent our needs for 4 years. We were not giving them the office, they do not own it. IT IS OURS.

The basic question to put to our reps is how can they support a war that is supposed to be bringing democracy and free elections to another nation, yet they close their eyes to the failing of our elections and our democracy? How could they fund another nations election process and stand against election fraud in that nation, based on exit polls, yet ignore the blatant discrepancies between the exit polls and the results here at home?

Stop reacting to "rumors" and continue with taking positive action, action calling on our reps to take a stand for us and our democracy.

(end of rant)

1. 3 reasons I can think of
People read the posts out of context, since the posts arise from whole clothe any way.

People don't read the posts and just respond to the post's headline.

People are drunk/high/hungover and get worked up because they're not thinking straight.

I'm not saying those are the only reasons, but they probably account for a lot of these types of reactionary postings.

It seems to me that this is happening more and more. Maybe it's the tension building up to 1/6. But I've been flamed on a few tsunami and silly lounge posts recently by people who apparently never read my post.

2. I wish the admins would implement the rule that had just
before and after the election requiring that the poster had over 100 posts before they could begin a thread. The craziness makes it hard to shift through the good stuff.

5. I understand that rule. On the other hand, I wouldn't have been
able to start the thread that helped get Will's article pinned to the front page of the MoveOn forum.

Hmmm. As I remember the thread referred to, the initiator said, "if this is to be believed" about the dkos post.

More actual reading would be nice <g>.

7. If the poster doesn't know the source is credible, the poster
is just spreading disruptive rumors. I read all of the post and all of the responses before posting this thread. My point is valid. Don't start a pissing match, I'm not in the mood. (no grin) If you don't like the thread you are allowed to ignore.

16. No prob.
I'm a professional writer/researcher, and the reactivity, the sourcing here has bugged me too. It's a wild time? I'm new to DU.

I do see a difference, Merh, between people posting disruptive, hysterical garbage and people who are trying to locate facts -- in the latter case, the post may be unvetted, may be speculative, may be just putting a rumor out there to do a reality check. Well, let's see how we do.

Give up? Not a chance. This is the long haul.

3. Agreed.
I don't expect any telegraphing of their intent right now.

But it's rather simple. The Democrats don't stand up and fight this, they can kiss their majority coalition good-bye. They rolled in 2000 and 2002...if they do so again, I'll be looking for a new political home. I've been a lifelong (32 years), reasonably moderate Democrat up until 2000, so they should not view this as an idle threat.

If they want to go along with the charade, they do so at the risk of destroying the Party.

10. Thanks Mehr
I think we need to implement the "take a deep cleansing breath before replying rule also."

This is a battle of logic and wit, not emotion. Consider the source, reflect on the message, and then calmly respond. It just takes a bit of practice. Remember, if you do go "off the hook", there is always the delete key. I use it quite often when my rants are too, shall we say, inflammatory. It works wonders.

11. LOL, I can't remember how many times I have typed a
reply to some goofy post only to realize that it was inflammatory and then delete it. I am just so tired of folks going off on rumors. There are alot of folks posting here that don't substantiate their sources or that just want to bring us down. Actually, there is another forum out there that is rewarding posters for their disruptive actions here. (I don't have the link, but there was a thread about it last week.) We just need to remain focused.

19. I started the Kennedy thread...
And I didn't mean to upset anyone. He's my Senator, and I was just so sure that he would be willing to stand up with Conyers. You can't get a safer Senate seat than Kennedy's. He'll be a MA Senator until he dies or retires. And to hear that he wouldn't do it, well I guess I just went off a bit.

Sorry, folks.

20. No sweat, you didn't mean to stir up a hornets next.
Just remember, what you posted was an unsubstantiated post. It is so easy on blogs to post things that are not necessarily true. Posting on the internet does not make the contents of the posts fact. Don't let it bother you about Kennedy, not yet. Conyers hasn't provided his report to the rest of the house and the senate, they don't know what facts he has developed that support his position and they may not be ready to make public what they are planning on doing. The element of surprise may be part of the game, or just an unwillingness to have their lives made misearble until the 6th.

We have to wait until the 6th to know for certain who did or did not take a stand. Until then, we mustn't give up, we must continue writing to our reps, demanding they take a stand. Just remember to take what you find on a blog with a grain of salt. This thread was posted as a reminder to those that overeacted to your post.

Welcome to DU :hi: Never give up! :bounce:

25. All of us are so nervous about the 6th
and whether our senators will stand up for us that we are attacking one another over everything. There ARE disruptors here taking advantage of our edgy dispostitions and feeding us absolutely bullroar. Like you said, think twice and post once. I've done a lot more reading than posting lately because of that.
I do get tired of someone making a derogatory statement about Kerry and then everyone else jumps on the bandwagon and disses him for a hundred replies. We need to keep ourselves upbeat because if we do, we have more power and energy to fight with.

Everyone have a wonderful evening and don't overdo the bubbly cause you will feel terrible tomorrow.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MAY IT BE A BETTER ONE THAN LAST YEAR.

31. LOL - Couldn't resist, could ya!? Just wait, it might happen yet!
All you old timer DUers, have a little patience w/us newbie DUers - the learning curve takes a few 'run ats' to catch the top. Sometimes the enthusiasm (& frustration) makes for bad posting etiquette. It can be hard to distinguish between the genuine & the arses that just want to cause trouble - I haven't quite gotten the hang, yet. A suggestion for new posters, read more & post less (sometimes it doesn't look like people are reading fully before posting replies, new & old). Get a feel for the new house, that way it'll sooner feel like a new home. Everyone has seemed kinda jumpy since Nov 2nd, quick to take exception ... quick to assume - so it's going to take some deep breaths & patience to take us all through the days ahead.

Merh is very right (imo) @ this being more than Kerry in the WH, this forum has to be ready to carry through for more than that. Voting reform is the most important goal that we face (although John & Theresa in the WH will be wonderful ... note I am still saying WILL!).

Happy New Year DUers!

or it links to a blog or another thread on here, not to a newspaper or magazine article, so it is silly to get all worked up about 90%+ of the posts. It is mostly just an exchange of ideas between semi-like minded persons.
