Boxer’s office won’t confirm MSNBC, Hill claim that Sen. Boxer will challenge electoral result

By John Byrne | RAW STORY Editor

The San Fransisco office of Senator Barbara Boxer denied claims that
a final decision had been made on whether she would challenge the electoral college result on the floor of the Senate Thursday.

Asked to confirm or deny reports that Sen. Boxer had made a decision to challenge, a spokesman said, “The Senator has made no public statment on that, we are still taking down opinions and I can forward them to the senator.”

MSNBC News reported Wednesday afternoon that Boxer was likely to challenge. Rush Limbaugh also made a similar comment on his radio program.

A source on Capitol Hill told RAW STORY that a challenge from Boxer was expected, but would not elaborate.

14. That receptionist
in the Sacramento office is very nice. Sounds young too. I told her I wasn't from Ca, but my daughter lives in Davis; and I am paying so much to UCDavis I might as well live in CA. She thought that was funny. But she said something really interesting, that Boxer doesn't care where you live! She is just noting all responses!!! Call Barbara.

They said that she hasn't made a decision yet and when she does she won't be announcing it through the press. What's that mean? Someone else call too!

15. whatever, dude
ya got to read between the lines. This is politics.

let me repeat what has been repeated in here hundreds of times:

THE LIKELYHOOD OF ANY SENATOR CONFIRMING ANYTHING BEFORE IT ACTUALLY HAPPENS IS NEXT TO NIL.

38. let's put it this way
were I one of them, and I had damning evidence, not only would I say nothing at all about it, but I would go out of my way to make things seem like politics as usual, that my opponents may be as blindsided by my revealing it as possible.

It's the 'damning evidence' that confounds us here. We don't know if they know anything big, for the exact reason I stated above.

"She was adament that Senator Boxer owes her constituents an answer on this and that answer was NO!"

She (The staffer) was adament that her boss owed her constituents an answer???? What sense does that make?

16. She would be an ideal choice to do it
To tell you the truth I did not want a senator going up there to formally endorse the challenge who has to stand for reelection in 2006, like Bill Nelson. Let's face it, this is a largely symbolic effort here, as Republicans control all the levers of power, and can thus shoot down any election challenge. If I thought there was a real chance to succeed my feelings would be different. I still think the absence of a senator in 2000 was a far greater outrage.

The election challenge is likely to be an unpopular move that will provoke much smirky and wisecracks from the commentariat. Boxer, having been reelected last fall, need not worry about electoral consequences.

28. My take...
Logic tells me that declaring yourself before the 6th...

would be a mistake. Lets just wait and see what Thursday brings...I know patience is a tough one right now...but I believe it is the wisest choice. Ours is a moral and just cause. For now, this is what sustains me.

39. washpost 2001
http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&node=&contentId=A27270-2001Jan6

Although much of the top GOP leadership turned out for the proceedings -- in addition to Hastert, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (Miss.), House Majority Leader Richard K. Armey (Tex.) and National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Thomas M. Davis III (Va.) were there -- only one member of the Democratic leadership, House Caucus Chairman Martin Frost (Tex.), attended, briefly at the start of the session.

Armey said GOP leaders had received assurances by Wednesday that there would be no serious objection to the count. House Minority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.), whose aides consulted with Gore's staff, urged the Black Caucus members not to raise an objection because the vice president did not support such a move. But caucus members argued in a news conference yesterday that they had no choice but to challenge Bush's election. "There comes a time you have to take your destiny into your own hands, no matter what is being said by whom," said Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).

The black lawmakers mocked the idea that they should put the election behind them -- "We will never get over this," said Rep. Corrine Brown (D-Fla.) -- and vowed to challenge Bush's Cabinet choices and appointees. They also criticized Senate Democrats, who they said had courted African Americans' votes and were obligated to object to Bush's victory.

But Vermont Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in an interview that he and other senators did not want to cause a ruckus. "There is a great deal of frustration that the Supreme Court decided the election by stopping the count in Florida," he said. "As much as I disagree with the court's decision, I uphold it as the law of the land and won't object. We will, all of us, Democrats and Republicans, accept George W. Bush as the next president."
