In the 11 states of the Confederacy, Bush won by 5 million
In the other 39 states, Kerry won by 1.5 million. My husband just heard this on NPR. We are indeed in the Second Civil War.

11. The map explodes the simplistic Red/Blue division by state....
Obviously, very few people on this thread or any other have bothered to check it out.

One point: How many South-bashing threads are started by DU'ers who are too ashamed of their own home state to include it in their profile.

13. How many South-bashing threads are started here by RNC ops?
It's insidious, really. Start a thread that'll make us look like the bigots they are. And it only helps to shore up their support and isolates Southern Democrats who will resent us.

People have to stop making sweeping generalizations...the map I posted proves that this is a lie....and the fact theat corporate media loves to show our politics in term of simplistic/misleading red vs. blue proves it.

Imagine what CNN will do in 2008...when the whole country is red. I guess that means we have all become RW fundies, right?

6. True - they haven't been trustworthy since their head was replaced
by the former head of Voice of America, sometime in 2000. Of course he may've been replaced since then but I guarantee you it was not with someone cleaner.

4. i marched in alabama in 1965
it was like a foreign country. not much has changed in the south. deep seated hatred for non-whites and liberals. residing in the pacific northwest all of my life, i'd forgotten those folks. now the memories are so vivid again.

9. And we wonder why we lost.
Attitudes like that contribute. Why the hell would they vote for a party that thinks of them like that? We have no connection with them, it is time to get one.

10. Fuck you...
...and fuck the high 'moral' horse they ride in on.

Don't fucking preach to me about how 'we' have to embrace their bigotry, imperialism, and war-mongering in oder to 'win'.

They are on the wrong side of history, you know it, I know it.

The ONLY lesson we should take from this election is that they were a little better organized...and that it's time for the red-state Dems to take the pampers off and figure out how to win a fucking election now and then.

12. And you are preaching the same ignorance that you are railing against
Check my link in my above post. Just who is pushing the red state / blue state myth?

Why, it's the people who have a vested interest in dividing us. The RNC and their co-conspirators in the corporate media.

Why do you buy that baloney?

16. I'm sick of having to dumb down the national discourse ...
...in order to try to win votes we'll never get. Yes, I advocate a divided electorate if 'Jesus', war, and oligarchy represent the other side.

It's these people who need to evolve...not us. They are simply on the wrong side of history, and we all know it. They are blatently being used by the rich, and it is up to us to show this to them...but that does not mean pander to them.

Maybe if we had lost the election 70/30 we'd have to seriously start looking inward, but we didn't. We lost by a hair to an incumbent president during a war.

And blaming the media? Please, that is so tired. These people are willfully ignorant on matters we find important. There was no shortage of reporting on Bush's utter incompetence...they simply didn't care. as long as he has 'Jesus' in his heart, they don't care about anything else.

17. By all means, keep pushing the RNC talking points
If we had lost the Southern States 70/30, I'd agree with you. That's not what happened. Instead of pissing off progressives/liberals and, most importantly, the uninformed middle - direct your anger where it belongs - Republicans that have hi-jacked our election process and their enabling buddies in the broadcast media.

a friend and they scared us to the point of absolute panic. I was with a (black) friend (who is not a US citizen). It was all about a black man being w/ a white woman. We fled as shots rang out over our truck. I was terrified. I was ashamed. I'm still alive though and I will fight on. This happened in TN near the Obed wild river.
on edit: I was ashamed because i thought I could travel in my country and introduce my friend to our beautiful natural areas and incredible parks and protected wild areas.

8. State divisions are absurd
in the case of spoiled balloting. Did it ever to occur to anyone it is easier to rack up that popular vote where nobody will be looking? People are locked away in ignorance and religious extremism but are not an evil majority.

Divide and conquer? Those divisions are sucker distractions favorable for people seeking power. Remember Ruwanda, Yugoslavia. Now Iraq.

Are you trying to build divisions THAT sucker doomed and real? it is the war criminals we are after. Their heads on pikes at the Hague, not neighbor against neighbor.

Focus on the crime not the ethnic or regional dislikes used to distract you. Think slaughter and mayhem are a satisfactory resolution of our real
problems. Joke. Wage peace, my fellow fools.

14. Bigotry and Prejudice
are the problems in the South. I am from the South and I know. Christianity is just a mask to hide behind so they can convince themselves that they are good people. They learn it all from their parents who got it passed to them the same way. These old ways, however are dying off as each generation becomes more tolerant. Therefore the repukes have to cheat, steal and be unfair and nasty.

18. Bigotry and prejudice aren't the exclusive domain of the South.
But Karl Rove and the RNC want you to believe and spread the lie. Nothing helps their cause better then Democrats who use state boundries to divide each other on.

15. There are lots of GREAT liberals in the south: Jimmy Carter, for ex.
I lived in Louisiana and met truly awesome liberals there -- hard core ones, because they have to deal with a huge amount of racism that is there. Maybe racism is not more prevalent in the south than in the north, just more overt. I don't know. But I do know that liberals down there really have to talk the talk, and it does us no good to insult them because of where they live (and who are more attached, in general, to their states than northerners are).

In any case, dissing an ENTIRE section of the country is not going to win us any elections unless the NE is planning to secede.
