Thousands expected to protest in Washington

Published: Tuesday, 18

WASHINGTON: Thousands of sign-wielding protesters opposed to President George W Bush are expected to crowd the streets of Washington on Thursday as the US leaders is sworn-in to a second four-year term. A hodgepodge of organisations representing blacks, women, environmentalists, anarchists and others have planned demonstrations in a capital that will be protected by a massive security net.

“January 20 is just our first day in the opposition,” said Sister Shazza Nzingha of the Black Panthers, an African American militant group whose roots date back to the 1960s civil rights movement.

Groups and individuals have also used the Internet to suggest anti-Bush acts nationwide. One e-mail message is urging people to keep their wallets in their pockets on Thursday to protest the war in Iraq and the inauguration’s cost, estimated at $40mn in private money. Another message calls on students to skip classes.

BushBlackOut.com suggests that web site managers keep their pages dark or write a short protest message on inauguration day. TurnYourBackonBush.com, which was founded shortly after Bush’s November 2 election victory, is calling on Bush opponents to line up along the path to be used by the president’s motorcade in Washington and turn their backs when his limousine passes by.
