Scandal fuels renewed push for voter ID bill

State lawmakers who want to require photo identification of voters said Friday that news of voting problems in Milwaukee has given their bill a burst of momentum.


The mounting evidence this week of irregularities in Milwaukee has caused concern around Wisconsin that will result in new pressure for reform, said Rep. Jeff Stone (R-Greendale), one of the authors of the photo ID bill, which is to be introduced Monday.

State residents may worry about their votes being, in effect, negated because of questions surrounding thousands of votes in Milwaukee, he said.

"People in Rhinelander or Rice Lake probably really didn't see election reform as a major issue two years ago, but I think they're beginning to see what goes on around the state, and having integrity in that system is important to every vote cast," Stone said.

Stone and the bill's co-author, Sen. Joe Leibham (R-Sheboygan), said that with more than 30 co-sponsors, the new photo ID measure already has more co-sponsors than a 2003 bill, which was approved by the Legislature but vetoed by Gov. Jim Doyle. The Republicans also said local governments such as the City of Cedarburg have begun passing resolutions supporting a photo ID requirement.

Democrats, not repukes, and that is why all these righties are so in a bunch about it? Otherwise they'd be saying the election went fine, there were no problems, nothing to see here, move on.

Milwaukee is one of the places where letters or flyers were distributed telling people they couldn't vote if anyone in their family had been convicted of a crime, or they owed parking tickets or child support.

Of course, to be fair, it was also the place where a lot of tires got slashed on vehicles rented by the repukes. Too bad some folks in Florida didn't have that idea in 2000, we might not be in the mess we are now.

as long as there are people willing to commit fraud and no effective enforcement and prosecution of those who do commit fraud.

The first step is serious investigation and prosecution of a significant number of those who committed fraud.

Otherwise, what's to stop someone who's inside the system from creating fraudulent voter ids?

I waited 2 hours to vote and I had to show a voter's registration card and a photo ID despite the fact that I'd been voting at the same place for 10 years. Now are the Republican focusing on why my voting machine KEPT voting for BUSH. No, They kept trying to perpuate the myth that there is someone out there who didn't deserve to vote. Many people who jumped through hoops to vote and were legitimate voters HAD their votes stolen away from them. That's were the focus should be! This is just Republican spin. I am convinced that the majority of these fraudulent voters were hatched inside the computer machine itself.

We need to counter their accusations of Dem fraud with incidents such as yours. And other thing is, since this issue is "hot" in Wisc., it may be a good time to take a closer look at our own election results... Remember this chart?

On November 2nd, 2004, I waited 2 hours to vote, I was asked for a voter registration card although I have voted at this polling place for 10 years. I was then told that a voter registration card was not good enough and that I had to have a Photo ID or I could not vote. Several other voters commented on how rude the poll workers were to me. So I produced my employee ID. I then went inside and I saw that the machine I used kept voting for Bush.

The machine that I pressed 5 times for Kerry and GWB lit up and on the 6th try, the Kerry button lit and stayed lit in Baltimore City, MD. Baltimore City used the AVC Advantage Model 315 by Sequoia Voting Systems, I think the rest of the state used Diebold Accuvote-TS. I have posted this elsewhere here, but I have since heard that 1 women had the same experience in Florida and this is the same story in Washington state with the same machines. In Baltimore, George Bush had 33,376 votes, although 1/3 of the registered Republicans stayed home on election day so only 19,030 registered republicans show up in Baltimore City to vote.

Hopefully getting a driver's license isn't the only way to get a "picture ID", as defined by the bill, in WI. Here in MA, you used to be able to get a state ID without learning to drive (a "liquor ID") but they stopped giving them out.

why don't they have state sponsored voter drives with a vehicle like a bookmobile and let the old folks get their picture taken inside and get their voter card with a photo on it, if you can't drive the MVA might as well be on the moon, and that is where you have to go to get a state ID here in Maryland. (Make part of the campaign money go to fund voting improvements or a percentage of the lottery take in states that have it). If the Maryland lotto can build sports arenas; I don't see why it can't help with the vote.
