Billboard Blitz to Blast Hollywood

HUMAN EVENTS has learned that a billboard blitz "thanking" Hollywood for the reelection of President Bush will be unveiled early next week.

The advertisements feature the faces of liberal Hollywood icons Michael Moore, Whoopi Goldberg, Ben Affleck, Martin Sheen, Chevy Chase, Barbara Streisand, and Sean Penn, and offer thanks to Hollywood their help getting President Bush reelected.

Two versions of the billboard were created, both "thanking" Hollywood -- the first for "4 more years" and the second for "W. Still President."

Billboard creator Citizens United, a group that advocates a return to traditional American values, has purchased the use of three billboards near the Kodak Theatre (home of the Academy Awards) for the month of February, which includes Oscar Night, Sunday, February 27.

35. Freedom of speech is a bitch, ain't it?
Quakerfriend, the billboard is not "advertising" anything. It is not offering goods or service to the public. Therefore, no "false advertising."

The billboards in question are an expression of political speech, paid for the speaker. As such, they are protected by the First Amendment.

Your political opponents have the same freedom and protection to speak that you do.

If you wanted to, you could rent that same billboard, put up a sign that says, "We wuz robbed!" with a picture of Bush dressed like the Hamburglar, and get your message out.

Maybe you should start a fundraiser!

on edit: anyone want to place bets on how long it takes for the Bush image to grow a Hitler mustache? I pubished news about these billboards on the local Indy Media here:
http://la.indymedia.org/news/2005/01/121844.php

Let see how long the Billboards last. I'll post pictures when I find the boards. LOL!

46. I recall at least one controversial Dem billboard last summer...
and it didn't look like there was any censorship going on.

In Kansas City, a billboard that faced onto Interstate 35 near downtown had a picture of a black man, and the caption,

The Republicans have a plan for the future.

You're not part of it.

That billboard stayed up for at least a month (I recall seeing it twice during the span of 4-5 weeks when I was down in KCMO.)

Now, THAT was free speech! It really got people thinking, and talking. I don't know if it helped the vote numbers (there is really no way to tell,) but any example of free political speech is a good thing.

72. Politically polarizing statements in view of public thoroughfares
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 06:22 PM by kgfnally
create a distraction among drivers in general and make roadways less safe for the general public.

There's your argument for banning overtly political speech on billboards. Advertising is fine, slogans of a 'soft' nature are fine, but please... nothing that would make certain people- on either side, right or left- white with rage.

That has no place on the roads.

88. Wrong. Try putting up a "controversial" BB about the war or Bush.
You will meet a lot of resistance from the companies who "own" the BBs as well as politicians. I do think that their could be a case against this guy for using names and likenesses without consent.

60. Bossie was fired by Dan Burton, no less...
...for doctoring audio tapes of Web Hubbel talking to his wife in jail.

He was trying to manufacture evidence against the Clintons out of whole cloth and get it presented to Congress. Something that used to be a felony, even among the DC/Media Analstocracy.

Prior to that (from Joe Conason):

Consider the unappetizing example of David Bossie , the right-wing researcher who worked on both the Senate Whitewater Committee and the Dan Burton -led Government Reform and Oversight Committee in the House. According to Drudge, Bossie was distressed because Connolly had supposedly promoted rumors that he is gay. This is the same Bossie whose debut in national politics involved promoting a patently fake story that Bill Clinton had impregnated an Arkansas student who then committed suicide -- with the added insinuation that she might not have killed herself.

That smear dated back to 1992, when Clinton was first running for president and Bossie was working for Citizens United, a conservative outfit that wanted to defeat the Democratic nominee by any means necessary. Not only did Citizens United try to promote this particular lie, but Bossie and a private detective actually harassed the dead woman's bereaved family so mercilessly that their misconduct was exposed by CBS News, which quoted the Bush campaign excoriating the scuzzy maneuvers of Citizens United.

Billboards are mild for these political terrorists.

89. That is not true Andy.
Name and likeness is a very serious issue. This is not a "news" org. It is a political ad with a clear agenda. Not saying I am not %100 percent sure here but regardless of where a photo is taken celebs can refuse to allow it to be used in the context of an ad for a product or an idea.

Whenever you sign a deal with a studio or a record label they always have to negotiate the use of your name and likeness. Same goes with advertisers except more of it.

It will just encourage the people he has posted on the bill board to continue to fight against the Repukes. If the 6 people he has posted felt the slightest bit of giving up the fight before, they sure wont after they see the bill board.

Not to mention it will make the rest of us try harder to block the Repukes' efforts every step of the way.

27. That's not the right billboard...
The real billboard should have diebold machines and gullible republican voters in a field with caca up to their knees, unable to smell the stench. When talking heads would ask in interviews before the election 'why are the polls so close?' I'd wait on the edge of my seat for Kerry people to say 'because too many people believe GW's lies'. Never did happen.

It's my opinion those 2 things go hand in hand for Bush's 'win'. There was fraud, but it wouldn't have been possible if so many people hadn't blindly believed the crap they were fed from (fill in the blank with favorite liar and the lying lies they told). I never believed in a million years that after seeing all of his tricks the last 4 years that 25 million people would vote for him, let alone 50 million. It's going on 3 months later, and I still can't believe it. I'm not in denial, I'm in dehell.

I saw Kerry on C-Span today (originally Thursday) talking about health care. He looked great and talked so eloquently (as opposed to Shrub's down-home jibberish). Just watching made me feel good that I voted for him. If he'd have won - we'd be on the road to recovery by now, and Dubya would be back in Crawford clearing shrubs - I mean brush.

The only ones this is going to impress are people who are already hopelessly lost to whatever it is they see in this empty-headed, projection screen of a president.

I hate that company, it's run by Lowry Mays, a good friend of the Bushies and a "Bush Pioneer". Clear Channel has been buying up tons of outdoor advertising over the last few years (and over 1,200 radio stations). I'd love to know if Citizens United is paying the going rate for the billboards. Anyone know how we can check that out??

55. These people just don't get it
It's almost like they view politics as an athletic contest of some sort in which they root for their favorite team. This is the sort of crap I would expect fans of one university to do in the town of a rival university after a big football game.

Someone needs to explain to them that politics is real life and has real consequences for real people.

If they're going to view politics as some sort of spectator sport, that's fine. They at least need to understand that we're all rooting for the same team, we just want different head coaches. Just because the guy I wanted to lead the team didn't get hired, it doesn't mean I'll stop rooting for the USA.

Very, very childish IMO.

all the time than the billboard itself. I'm not sure what exactly they're trying to accomplish, either. I do notice that Michael Moore stands out in both photos, which to me means he's the one that bothers them the most. It tells me he needs to keep doing what he's doing, because it's bothering them a LOT.

I do think a little artwork on shrub would be nice. I feel sorry for anyone who goes past the ads - I couldn't stand to look at that smirk everyday. I think it's pollution of some kind...

64. Carolab, I like the idea.
Just yesterday I received in the mail a letter from Howard Coble's (R-NC) office about this "crisis." I assume that is the next step. Surely there is a huge campaign on the horizon to scare the world into backing Bush's reform plan.

Anywho, I plan to scan the letter after work today and put it online. In just the opening paragraphs it contradicts itself. Opening with the "crisis if nothing is done RIGHT NOW!" line. Then saying it can pay Social Security until 2042. You can't have it both ways.

71. Those are only PROJECTIONS....all depends on how well the
economy performs. If you recall in Clinton's 1st term, these
same people were projecting budget deficits as far as the eyes
can see, then the economy got much stronger and those projected
deficits suddenly turned into surpluses.

longer and their proportion as a percentage of the working
population is growing. My 11 & 13 year olds will not collect
anything when they retire after putting in thousands of $$
into the system.

The "current rate" you refer to is just that..."current" rate.
As the proportion of retired folks increases, the current rate
will no longer be valid.

75. Googly, here is a chart that proves you wrong.
Edited on Wed Feb-02-05 09:49 PM by Carolab
http://www.cbpp.org/12-17-04socsec.htm

This was put out by MoveOn. Scroll down to the bottom chart and see that even if we DO NOTHING, your children WILL receive benefits AND they will receive MORE benefits than if a system of "privatization" was implemented.

The truth is that the privatization scheme will cut their benefits and furthermore they would be investing in a scheme that would be highly speculative and the fees alone will eat up a healthy percentage of anything they would manage to gain. In addition, the "transition cost" to such a scheme would pile on debt that would equal or surpass the supposed shortfall in social security if we DO NOTHING to change the system.

The only responsible solution is to rescind the tax cuts at the top of the income pyramid, implement a surcharge on incomes over $200K and/or provide incentives for employers to offer matched 401K accounts.

Privatization ONLY benefits investment funds.

77. Carolab, please read this post and I promise to read your link.
In my own case, I started contributing into social security in
1962 (yeah I am giving my age away LOL). I have contributed
aprox $160,000 (incl employer) into the system over the years.
And now my social security benefit is $1400/month. If I had the
option in 1962 to put 1/3 of my contributions into a total stock
market fund such as the Russell 5000 index fund, based on
ACTUAL stock market results, I would have accumulated a nest
egg of $700,000. On that amounttoday you can get an annuity
paying $3300/month or more depending on options selected.

So my monthly pension would have been 2/3x1400 + 3300 =
$4233 /month instead of the $1400 /month I am getting.

Even if social security had gone broke, I would still have
my $3300 /month.

money you made, according to their privatization plan. I believe the amount listed in the NYT was "between 70 100%". Thus leaving you with the same retirement benefits.

Also, not everyone should be in the stock market. It carries a lot of risk.

86. Now all that money you gave to Social Security will go away.
First that would have only worked out to $3,300 a month if you had been lucky enough (or smart enough) Not to have invested in Enron, or any other very risky and now debunked investing strategies. Also you would have to assume your investments would not have been wiped out by Bush's brother's Saving and Loan scandal. So if you happened to be smart enough and lucky enough to have invested wisely and not have been taken in by the thousands of scams out there, you would have $3,300 a month.

But now you wont even get the smaller rate of investment the federal government had planned because Bush is going to reduce even those smaller benefits. So, I'm currently 47 and have been paying in since I was 15 and I'll be lucky to get anything by the time I'm 67 (or 77 depending on what they will change the retirement age to.) Now how is this better for you and me? We paid in, it's too late to invest, we are screwed.

78. For the last time - it's 100% legal
Edited on Thu Feb-03-05 12:13 AM by Mistwell
1) The pictures were all taken in public;
2) The pictures are not selling a good or service;
3) The pictures are for a purely political speech purpose;

There is nothing illegal about the ad at all. It's straight up free speech. Every friggen entertainment magazine established long ago that the images of stars taken in public are fair game for just about anything - and that WAS to sell a product or service (which is less protected). For political speech, the most protected kind of speech there is, there is NOTHING illegal about.

We should respond with our own billboard - not some bullshit whine about how it isn't "fair". A suit would just give them the exact kind of attention they are praying for. We would both lose the suit AND popularize the billboards on ever front page of every newspaper, and healdine it on television news, and give massive fodder to talk radio.

PS - you need damages to have a lawsuit as well.

87. billboard is up in West Hollywood
So I'm walking down Sunset Blvd. near Doheny and I look up and see one.

And it's pathetic.

First of all, I drive down Sunset everyday and only while I was walking did I notice it. I have no idea how long it has been up there.

Now, it's at the tail end of the business area of the "Sunset Strip." It's nowhere near where the Marlboro Man used to be or anywhere near the heart of Sunset. It's in between 2 streetlights and on a curve in the road. So the chances of any drivers looking up to see it are slim. There are other billboards and plenty of palm trees blocking it, too. If they had it across the street, facing the other way, sooooo many more people would be forced to sit in gridlock with that hideous mug staring at them. But I guess they didn't want to spend that much on it.

The pics here online make it look so much better than the real life version.

The one I saw today looks more like a realtor's billboard. A cheesy one. With a bloated guy in a suit. Saying something like "I'll sell your house." * looks constipated.

Whoever made this must have used a wal-mart version of photoshop. The Hollywood faces aren't clear, it's confusing to look at and I think a 5 year old could've picked out better fonts. Most of the Hollywood people are blocked by the trees, too. You can't really see anything but a big "W" and *.

I mean, if they're going to try to "rub salt in our wounds," at least they could be clever, creative, smart, um, nevermind, I forgot who I was talking about. They don't pull it off. Not even close.

So really, it's dumb. Which I know you guys know.

Now I have to go wash out my eyes from looking at it for too long.

btw, I did post this in the CA forum.
