9. ALL RIGHT! ALL RIGHT! ALL RIGHT! *TEACH-IN'S!* YES, YES, YES!!!
Horribly, I can't go, I'm working! But I will do everything I can to promote this! And the Teach In needs to hear about Kevin Shelley, and all that's happening in Sacto. This is so important, oh god! I wonder if Shelley's ready to speak out. If not, someone needs to explain what happened, and people need to get on top of the Schwarz appointment to Sec of State (Bruce McPherson), not only re: e-voting, but also the redistricting scam.

I will post this all around. Back later...

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=325113&mesg_id=325113

For those who don't know, Kevin Shelley, CA Sec of State, just driven out of office on trivial, unproven charges, in a shark attack led by SF Chronicle and some Democrats (Perata, Romero and McCormack, LA county elections head)--after he decertified and sued Diebold for their lies about the security of their machines, and provided Californians with a paper ballot option. Shelley, THE national leader on e-voting accountability. VERY BAD THINGS GOING ON IN CALIFORNIA RE WALLY O'DELL AND H. AHMANSON COUNTING ALL OUR VOTES IN SECRET--and on Schwarz taking Enron's grand theft out of the hides of Calif. pensioners, and on Schwarz plans to redistrict Calif. (a la Tom Delay in Texas?).

After keel-hauling anti-Diebold SoS Shelley into the blue Pacific, Schwarz just appointed Repub. Bruce McPherson (to be approved by Leg), who seems to say the right things about verified voting, but could well be a wolf in sheep's clothing re both e-voting and redistricting. CALIFORNIANS NEED TO BE ON THIS MATTER NOW.

Whose leadership on this California SoS issue do you respect who's in California and might be available to speak?

Thanks for writing about this. I'd noticed the issue was missing from the day, but it didn't get to the top of my list to contact the organizers about until you wrote.

Another possibility:

Kim Alexander
see http://calvoter.org/index.html
She also supported Shelley. She's giving a presentation on e-voting at a Sacramento MoveOn.org event on Feb 20 in Sacto.

Kim Alexander - CalVoter
Address: 503 4th Street Suite B
Davis, CA 95616
Phone: 530-750-7650
Fax: 530-750-1799

See my purist reservations about her at

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=203&topic_id=327402&mesg_id=327402

She's backed by a lot of BIG foundation and tech company money (Rockefeller, Apple, H-P. etc.), and has a mission of promoting technology so that it enhances democratic processes. This kind of language put me off. BUT she does seem right on, on the issues--questions closed source code, insists on VVPB (real one), etc. AND she was supportive of Shelley when he most needed it. Very knowledgeable, too. But not likely to be flaming radical on election fraud, by any means--nor to see the Shelley thing in the Bush Cartel conspiracy terms that I see it in. I want to say she's a "player" but that has some really negative connotations that I don't mean. I just mean she's funded by the biggies, spoke at the Commonwealth Club on e-voting (a good speech)--that sort of thing. Well-connected (in ways that would raise leftist eyebrows). I do not know her personally, and only know about her from her web site. She seems to have made a personal decision to challenge the basic flaws in e-voting, after she realized how serious they were.

Paper ballot nuts (like me!) might not fully appreciate her perspective. But I'm sure she would be informative on e-voting, knows that subject inside out, and is quite concerned about it.

I don't know how much of the truth about the Shelley disaster she knows, or would be willing to say publicly.

-----

ALSO, how about our own sfexpat2000!!!? She would be great! Look upthread. See her postings on the Shelley threads.

37. Lord, this sounds like a fabulous program! I see so many things on...
...this speaker's list that tell me that this TEACH-IN is absolutely right on, and it's very heartening.

--that "we've been here before"--marvelous to hark back to the biggest disenfranchisement in the lifetime of many living people, the systemtatic and LEGALISTIC disenfranchisement of black voters throughout the south, the struggle that was so radicalizing to so many people who remember the '60s. Now WE'RE ALL IN THAT BOAT, black and white together!

--Lynn Landes--that greatest of all warriors! --that woman possessed! I remember reading her early on, and she had it so right, so early! --How great that she is on the program!

--and the HAVA disinformation! Yes, yes, yes! Disinformation! Such a key insight!

--and Jonathan Simon! Wow! What an INCREDIBLE speaker's list! He also, one of the first--if not THE first to cry foul on 2004!

--and "The Disappearing Media!--so many vital topics covered here!

--and organizing "county by county, precinct by precinct"! MY schtict! That's the only way reform is going to happen.

--and Open Source Code! My, my!

It's like a convergence--everbody struck by the same things, seeing the same things, understanding the heart of this problem.

I am very, very, very impressed. And not just with the topics, with the PEOPLE, such a great convergence of people, groups and concerns focusing on THIS, the core problem of core problems--that the peoples' will is being thwarted, and how to overcome that.

I don't see the Kevin Shelley situation on this agenda. That's the ONLY thing missing (but I understand it may be covered in Santa Monica). I DO hope someone will bring it up at the Oakland forum. Preserving Shelley's reforms--and building on them--helping him in some way, and addressing the Bushification of California that is in progress with Schwarz appointing the Sec of State and planning re-districting. We need to mobilize Californians about this.

I am as unhappy as I can be that I cannot attend this TEACH-IN. There's no way I can re-arrange my work schedule on such short notice.

But I'm doing everything I can to promote it. And I'll be very glad if someone tapes it, so I can see it and it can be gotten around. I'm sure there must be plans for this.

38. I'm glad you're helping promote this event
I agree that it's an amazing line-up (and I'd think that even if I weren't one of the speakers). I hope it'll be a full house (750).

They're trying to set up streaming, and I think it'll be videotaped. Whatever I find out about that I'll post to DU.

And the Shelley situation is very much on people's minds. I've done some work on getting them to add a speaker on this issue but they couldn't squeeze it in, so the topic will be covered in other ways. If you have ideas about how, let me know and I'll pass them along to the organizers.

I'm not aware of any organization in CA having taken on bold leadership on the SoS issue. If you know of one that has, I'd like to get their input about how to involve people. I'm responsible for the handout at the teach-in that will list ways for people to get involved in the election justice/reform movement. It's my hope that I'll get permission to post the contents of the handout to DU (the requests for help come from specific organizations, and they'd need to give permission for me to do that).

Thanks again, for all you do.

42. The Patrick Henry Club in Orange County...
...they passed a great resolution about Shelley. I'll go looking for it and post it here.

If someone could bring up the Shelley situation--maybe you, emlev (or sfexpat2000, who will be there--DU activist)--in the general forum, just the most basic facts, and how this is a state by state struggle, with BushCons a thousand steps ahead of us in Calif. (and probably elsewhere), and then refer it to the Action segment (Walter Riley et al) for discussion and strategy, that would be great.

We have the problem that almost no one in Calif. knows what the hell's going on here--and we've got major CA Dem leaders on the wrong side of the Shelley thing (Don Perata and Gloria Romero, of the CA Senate, and Connie McCormack, L.A. elections chief), so local grass roots Dems may be very misinformed. So we just need to get the word out, however briefly, that DU activists DON'T BELIEVE the charges against Shelley, and DO believe that he is being targeted because of his anti-Diebold actions, and that there is likely some corruption in Dem circles re electronic voting. And that Texas/Tom Delay style redistricting may be the purpose of all this.

http://patrickhenrythinktank.org/res-shel.html

RESOLUTION OF SUPPORT FOR KEVIN SHELLEY

Whereas, Californians had access to a paper ballot in November, 2004, while people in many others states did not, and California voters will have a voter-verifiable paper trail where there are voting computers in California in 2006 and individuals of other states may not, and

Whereas, unlike J. Kenneth Blackwell, Glenda Hood and numerous other Secretaries of State, Kevin Shelley worked to help voters have an increased opportunity to have their votes counted and has worked in a non-partisan manner to make election results more accurate, and

Whereas, the Republicans have created a politically motivated attack on Kevin Shelley for the apparent purpose of replacing Secretary of State Shelley with someone who will make it easier to rig elections,

Therefore be it resolved that the Patrick Henry Democratic Club supports Kevin Shelley and calls on all government officials to back Kevin Shelley in his fight against the partisan attacks by opponents of fair elections.

Be it further resolved that the Patrick Henry Democratic Club condemns all such attacks upon Mr. Shelley as the partisan attempts to undermine our election system that they are.

Passed unanimously on January 17, 2005.

Let Shelley know you support him:

44. I just sent the Patrick Henry Democratic Club an email about both...
...events. Said they need people to bring up Shelley. Not sure if Tustin is in Orange County (i.e., which forum would be most convenient for them).

Friends,
The most serious work of our lives begins NOW... to
educate, agitate and activate ALL Americans to DEMAND
that our horrendously broken election system. We
cannot survive another stolen election. It has to STOP
- but only the PEOPLE can stop it.

AND WE WILL. People are flying and driving in from ALL
over the country to attend or present at our Teach-In
on 2/26 & 2/27.

There's a mirror Teach-In in SF on 2/25 & 26. Two
weeks ago, there was a Teach-In/Film night on Election
Fraud in Santa Cruz. The the Civil Rights/Voting
Rights/Pro-Democracy
movement is gaining ground and momentum HERE in
California!!!
(After all, we are the land of Boxer and Waters...)

NOW is the time to inspire all your friends, all the
Americans who had their hearts broken on 11/02/04 to
demand Election Reform. If they
don't understand exactly how the Votes were stolen
last election, this Teach-In will show them.

We MUST become a mass movement immediately. Every
single Social Justice, Civil Justice, Environmental
Justice, Spiritual and Religious group should get on
board, NOW. Get
together and get it done by 2006.

"Determine that the thing shall be done, and then you
will find the way." Abraham Lincoln

Join us. Let's be brave together. Let's stand up to
these Neo-Confederate Corporatist bullies and take
back our Vote. THANK-YOU!

63. Details, details!! We want details!! Please tell us ...
how the teach-in went today. Lots of us are dying to hear, particularly with your large "all-star" lineup of nationally prominent speakers.

How many people were there, who were the best speakers (and the not-so-great), was the press present (how many, from where, etc.), did you folks videotape/audiotape the speakers (if so, how quickly can we get a copy of the tape), what was the vibe like, the setting, the weather .... Oh you know. Just tell us everything.

Sure hope it went well. And that it sets up a cleansing breeze that moves east, stopping in scores of cities and towns to kindle more outrage and gather more righteous steam, 'til it hits D.C. like a democratic lightening bolt. Who knows, maybe the rightwardly anointed will think they've been raptured and fly away of their own accord.
