VERY IMPORTANT! Instructions from John Conyers office on how WE can help.
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 01:09 PM by mzmolly
56 million Americans voted for John Kerry and possibly had their votes stolen.

What to do? Well according to John Conyers office, here's what WE can do!

First: The House Committee on the Judiciary ~ Democratic Members are asking us to report any voter iregularities that we are aware of. I think personal stories are most sought, but send them what we have.

1. Report all voter iregularities to Mr. Conyers and The House Committee on the Judiciary-Democratc Members here:

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/contact.html

Next: We are being asked to contact our local representatives and encourage them to support John Conyers request to the General Accounting Office to investigate "voter irregularities" in the 2004 Presidential election.

2. Contact your local rep and ask them to sign on to this effort here:

http://www.house.gov/writerep/

And here:

http://congress.org/

3. Contact the GAO here: Ask them to investigate!

http://www.gao.gov/fraudnet/fraudnet.htm

Send allegations via e-mail to fraudnet@gao.gov

If you prefer to address this from a voter irregularity vs. Fraud perpective contact Jenkinswo@gao.gov

4. Contact the DNC as they are said to be investigating:
The number is 202-863-8000.

View a copy of the official request to the GAO here:

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/gaoinvestvote2004ltr11504.pdf

Follow up letter here:

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/gaoinvestvote2004ltr11804.pdf

*I'm having trouble opening the letters, can someone post the text?*

Let's get to work! And, keep this kicked :kick:

under some coal and other junk. An enterprising person could go through and sort out the really good stuff from the not-so-good stuff for both Cam Kerry and Congressman Conyers. Anyone interested? (I'm going to continue to collect links, like this one.)

54. Sam Adams agreed
"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds"

"A true patriot would keep the attention of his fellow citizens awake to their grievances, and not allow them to rest till the causes of their just complaints are removed. Our ship is in the hands of pilots who are steering directly under full sail to a rock. The whole crew may see this course to violate our liberties in full view if they look the right way."

10. We don't need to call it "voter fraud"
Machine glitches, bad software, default settings, all amount to the same thing.

Would we seem less partisan and more concerned about our country if we focus on voting as the foundation of democracy?

And less tin hat and therefore more believable :)

11. I sent an objective letter to David Price, (D) NC 4
asking him to sign the letter and support the investigation. I am not asking for a recount. I am not asking that the election results be declared null and void. That's jumping ahead.

I'm asking - and I ask everyone reading this to urgently request the same from your representatives - that a thorough investigation be done into what happened on election day.

If votes are being tampered with to influence the outcome of elections, then we don't have democracy anymore. We have a dictatorship. Stop it now.

15. This is what I submitted:
Dear Committee members,
Please investigate!

I made some calculations based on CNNs exit polls and the accumulated vote numbers and they are bizarre!

First, according to this, only 5% more people voted in 2004 on an adjusted basis than in 2000. Does that jive with the reality of public participation in this election?
Second, Bush almost doubled his minority numbers from 4.5 million to 7.6 million. His increased minority vote of 3.1 is a 69% increase! Have you ever seen numbers like these?

It's far easier to believe the voted was hacked than to believe minorities are suddenly more conservation in the last four years.

Overall voter rate 2004 54%
Overall voter rate 2000 51%

Minority voting rate 50% in 2004
Minority voting rate 41% in 2000

White voting rate 56% in 2004
White voting rate 55% in 2000

69% more minorities voted for Bush in 2004 than in 2000.
13% more whites voted for Bush in 2004 than in 2000.

5% more whites voted for Kerry in 2004 than Gore in 2000. The average rate of growth in the population from 2000-2004 is 4.5 %, so this is practically the same as no change.
30% more minorities voted for Kerry in 2004 than Gore in 2000.

Overall Voters for other candidates decreased from 3.9 million in 2000 to 1 million in 2004 for a negative 134%

Bush stole Nader's votes!Have minorities ever voted at a 50% rate? And, if so, why would they go for Bush?

However, the overall increase of people voting is 11%, with again the reminder that there has been a 4.5% increase in voting population, so the adjusted improvement is really just 5.6%

My calculations are that of the total voter age population, in 2000, the voter turnout was 51%

and in 2004, by addin

g 4.5% to the 2000 voter pop. numbers

the turnout is 54%, not 60%

My calculations:(CNN election results, CBC link for 2000, census data are sources)
According to
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/uselection2004/
Voting age population (VAP) in 2000:
205,815,000

Estimated 2004 voting pop (205.8 x 4.5%) 215 m
Census Bureau

US Pop: 294,704,094 in 2004
Population, 2000

281,421,906

Increase in population 4.5 % so estimated voter turnout= 54%

Total people voting in 2000 105.4 Bush 50.5 Gore 51 other 3.9
Total people voting in 2004 116.7 Bush 59.7 Kerry 56.2 other 1

From the census White persons, percent, 2000 (a) 75.1% of pop.

total white people voting in 2000 81% =85.4 m Bush 54% of 85.4 = 46.1 m Gore 42% = 35.9 m
other 3% = 2.6 m

total white people voting in 2000 for Gore 35.9 for a 70% rate

total white people voting in 2004 77%= 89.9 m Bush 52.1 m, Kerry 36.9 m other .8 m

Total white people voting for Kerry in 2004 36.9 m = 66% rate
Improvement in total numbers= 3%, which is less than the rate of growth of the population

54% of voting age people voted in this election, 51% in the previous election

That means that of the 59.6 million that Bush got, 52.1 million of them are white. That's an 87.5% white vote, so MM is right after all. Also, Bush had a 91% white vote in 2000

52.1 - 46.= 6.1 m white people His percent increase in whites was 13%

Also, that means Bush had 12% non white or 7.6 million vote for him in 2004. In 2000, he had 9%, or 4.5 m vote for him
7.6-4.5=3.1
So that means that his percent of non- white people voting for him increased by 69%

Gore got 15.1 m nonwhite voters for a 30% rate. Kerry got 19.3 m non white voters for a 34% rate. So, Kerry improved his minority vote by 30%
According to
http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/uselection2004/
Voting age population (VAP) in 2000:
205,815,000

According to the census bureau 75% of the pop is white, so 25% is non-white. Total white people of voting age if same percentage holds = 154.4 m whites and 51.5 m nonwhites

If the same percentage holds for eligible voters, then in 2000, with a 51% voting rate , of 104.5 people, 46.1 m voted for Bush, 35.9 m voted for Gore and 2.6 m voted for other(Nader)= 85.4 m white people for a 55% rate

That means 69 m white people didn't vote in 2000

Also , in 2000, if Bush got 4.5 m , Gore got 15.1 m and other got 1.3 m = 20.9 m for a 41% voting rate for minorities

So in 2004 if whites were still 75% and the population grew by 4.5% expected numbers of overall voters are 215 million and potential white voters are 161.3 m and non-white 53.8 m

So Bush in 2004 got 52.1 m whites, Kerry got 36.9 m whites and other got .8 m whites = 89.9 m whites overall voted in 2004, so 71.4 million didn't vote. Voting rate for whites 56% Increase in voting for whites - 5%, about the growth rate.

For minorities, Bush got 7.6 m, Kerry had 19.3 m and other got .2 m =27.1 m non white voters in 2004 and 26.7 million didn't vote in 2004 for a 50% voting rate. Increase in minority voting = 27.1 m - 20.9 = 6.2 m for a 30% increase in minority voting.

I really like that Congress.org link ... very handy--bookmark it!

I contacted all my reps (Governor Granholm, Senators Stabenow and Levin, Reps Smith, DeRosset and Brater).

Used this text:
I'd like to encourage you, in the strongest terms I can, to support John Conyers request to the General Accounting Office to investigate "voter irregularities" in the 2004 Presidential election.

There are many, many reports of irregularities such as more votes counted than total voters in a precinct; touch-screen voters unable to confirm a vote for their chosen candidate; and registered voters being denied their right to vote, or intimidated into using provisional ballots which were then not counted.

Disenfranchisement is un-American! The democratic process must both be, and be seen to be, legitimate.

Subject was "Please support Representative John Conyers"

gotta go mail the hard copies now!

21. DEMOCRACY IMPERILED (DNC part of the problem)
The dust has barely settled on what in America passes for a democratic election, and already the air is heavy from the smoking guns in Ohio and at Election Fraud Central (Florida). Crucial to the Bush Election Juggernaut is the smear campaign against exit polls, which are consistently accurate to less than 2% and often to 0.1%. Exit polls were done in 18 states throughout the voting cycle including sets of 4 each in Ohio and Florida which showed John Kerry winning comfortably to a statistical probability of victory of 99.9982%.

Of course that does not prove fraud but it sets off alarms all over the landscape. Consider the following: (1) Exit polls closely correlated with vote tallies in every state except in those states using electronic BBV machines (no paper trail) or combinations including BBVs; and (2) in every instance of exit poll and vote tally discrepancy, G.W. Bush was the recipient of the extra votes and never John Kerry. This amounted to +6 in Ohio and +7 in Florida.

Given the relentless closeness of this election, it is likely that the 4 million Bush plurality is an Electoral WMD. Destruction of voter Democratic registration forms was documented involving tens of thousands especially in NV and the Pacific Northwest. The first sign of trouble in OH was the Cuyahoga County tally showing Kerry winning by only 2:1 instead of 3-4:1. The enormous Democratic wards delivered the vote with people waiting up to 10 hours (which people don’’t do to vote for an incumbent). Vote skimming is easily done with the Diebold computers and the CEO is an avowed Bush supporter, so forgive my cynicism.

In the Bush Family Fiefdom (Florida) the optical scanning computers are centrally processed and easily configured to miscount. Ballot cramming is also easily done and Ohio has more than 93,000 more votes than registered voters with Florida taking the prize at 234,000+. Recently, a Mr. Fisher in Florida has submitted to the FBI evidence which he claims proves that the Florida machines were hacked, who did it, how it was done, and how the same group used 2002 as a trial run to perfect their technique.

Any voting method not leaving a permanent paper trail that can be verified by audit is a felony on Democracy and should be outlawed (blackboxvoting.org). I believe that votes should be recounted in Ohio and Florida, not necessarily with an intention to overturn the results, but to validate the truth which is the soul of democracy.

41. sent to every American in my contacts file
I've sent the instructions from John Conyers' office to everyone I know.
I'm an expat American living in Nepal and was terribly saddened and disheartened by the election. Nearly every American I know here and in other overseas locations was desperately hoping that Kerry would win. Living outside the US makes one just that much more aware of what a disaster our "acting President" is.
I've become addicted to DU since signing on for the first time on November 3. It has helped me to shed my sadness and become energized and, dare I say?, hopeful. Someone will write an amazing book about the power of the Internet, based on the 2004 election. Some of you DU'ers are truly awesome!
Please, please don't give up!

What does "kicked" really mean?
In my neck of the woods, LTTE is the liberation army in Sri Lanka. What is it here?

:hi:

Last things first:

"kicked" just means adding a post to a thread in order for it to move up the page. When you open a particular forum, the page lists the discussion threads in order of most recent posts, with the most recent at the top. When a person doesn't have anything in particular to say in a new post, but wants to keep a thread active and visible, s/he can do a "kick" post. ("n/t" means "no-text", btw {"by-the-way"})

"LTTE" stands for "letter-to-the-editor" -- perhaps a small act of liberation in its own way. ;-)

Anyway, welcome to DU! I am pleased/amazed to hear from someone living in Kathmandu! How has it been with all the political unrest there? I had the marvelous good fortune to be able to visit Nepal way back in 1982, and absolutely fell in love with the country, and Kathmandu in particular.

It has been heartbreaking to me to read about what has been happening in that precious and beautiful place, the bloodshed and civil strife. I hope that you are keeping safe and well -- and also hope you might at some point find the time to post your own on-the-ground impressions about what's going on there.

Nepal will always have a special place in my heart, I have always hoped to someday be able to return.

Best wishes,
sw
