for voter ID or anything else are numerous. Not the least of which is this is one of the supreme methods of control of citizens.

It brings to mind all the repercussions of, "show me your papers" in those countries where the state is considered more important than citizens. I pity those who don't yet realize what we are heading for; the all powerful state that has complete control of every aspect from birth to death.

I know Bushites who would recoil in horror, but they have chosen party over principal. And they have been duped.

The poor, working stiff who shows up at the polls during lunch break and realized he forgot it. he has to get back to work on time or he gets fired and his famoily starves.

Who would not? The fat cat Repug who does not have to work. If he forgets his ID, he can take all day to go home and get it!

This is a non-problem. We don't have people voting who are not supposed to vote. We have people not voting who should be voting. And the measure will not make more people vote.

You don't fix elections by having unqualified people voting.

You fix a democracy by making it easier to vote.

At the moment, I would be inconvenienced. Granted, this is an unusual case, but the California DMV is refusing to send me my renewed license because the name on my license (my married name) does not match the name on my social security card (my maiden name).

At the moment, I'm trying to figure out which law requires the names to match, because I don't want to change either one. If it weren't for my passport, I would be without a valid picture ID.

Although this is a rare situation, my point is that there are lots of ways to screw with people on the ID issue. I think it would be a total nightmare for someone who has recently moved. The California DMV is *not* an efficient organization.

There is a long list of who might be impacted and yours is just one example.

What we do know for sure, the persons likeliest to be impacted are Democratic voters, not Republicans. The Republicans also know this and they are trying to shave points with this totally unnecessary "reform."

" ...Nevada County Clerk-Recorder Kathleen Smith said she believed that instead of helping restore voter confidence, the bill would damage it.

"Voting is a right, not a privilege. When you start requiring people to do something in order to vote, you are going back in time," she said.

Smith also criticized Keene for not contacting any of the elections officials in the counties - including Nevada County - he represents. She said she only learned of it when she was contacted by the Butte County elections official, which is also a part of Keene's district, along with Lassen, Plumas, Yuba, and Sierra Counties, and a northern strip of Placer County.

Besides, she said, there is already a system in place for verifying identity.

The Help America Vote Act requires new voters to prove their identities when they register, or at the precinct polls if they have not previously voted in a federal election, and every signature on a ballot must be verified by three separate individuals.

The proposed bill may be tough to implement as well. "What about people who vote by mail? They don't have to show anything." Smith said."
