:loveya::loveya: Despite that damn gray suit...

------------------------------------------------------
Tonight On Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Martha, Martha, Martha
Martha Stewart strolled outdoors with her dog and fed her horses Friday morning, hours after returning from prison to the multi-million-dollar estate where she will remain under the watch of federal authorities while trying to revive her homemaking empire.

Countdown w/ Keith Olbermann broadcasts LIVE at 8 pm et, and the count is never complete without you. Join us.

Syrian President Bashar Assad is expected to announce a pullback of troops to eastern Lebanon, near the Syrian border, but not a full withdrawal in an upcoming parliament speech, Lebanese Defense Minister Mahmud Hammud said Friday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7023538/

When Animals Make News...
A couple's plans for a birthday party for their former pet chimpanzee
turned tragic when two other chimps at an animal sanctuary escaped from their cage and attacked. The man was critically injured with massive wounds to his face, body and limbs, and the attacking animals were shot dead. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7080698/

A gigantic lobster that may have survived two world wars and Prohibition before being plucked from the ocean will live on - but only as a shell of its former self. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7077221/

Torri Hutchinson's cat might just have one less life to live. Hutchison was driving along Interstate 15 one day recently when a motorist kept trying to get her attention and pointing to the roof of her car. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7088318/?displaymode=1006

And of course, the NEWSQUIZ.

That's some of what we're working on for tonight's show.

Keith blogs. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/

Finally,
Police arrested an 8-year-old boy who allegedly had a violent outburst
in school, head-butting his teacher and kicking an assistant principal, when he was told he couldn't go outside to play with other students. The 4-foot pupil was led away from Rawls Byrd Elementary School in handcuffs Tuesday and charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/B/BRF_SCHOOL_TANTRUM?SITE=NWCN&TEMPLATE=STRANGEHEADS.html&SECTION=HOME

President Bush on Friday nominated Steve Johnson, the acting head of the Environmental Protection Agency, as his choice to continue in the post.
A 24-year EPA employee, Johnson would become the first professional
scientist to head the agency if confirmed by the Senate.

Former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker, a close ally of the Bush
family, broke ranks with the Bush administration on Thursday and called for the United States to get serious about global warming.

A $50,000 reward is expected to be offered for information into the
murder of federal Judge Joan Lefkow's husband and mother, a Chicago
newspaper reported on Friday. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7088612/

Michael Jackson's accuser was aware of similar claims from 1993 before
he made allegations that the singer molested him, an investigator who
worked for the pop star told NBC News.

198. Springtime in the South. Just the ticket for KOEB-stars and other ...
... election reform heroes. Good evening, Clark2008. We've decided to move ahead with the April 8-10 conference in Nashville, with the fiscal assistance of www.freepress.org and many other folks. It should be a great conference and as soon as the annoucement is up on freepress, I'll post a thread about how folks can get the program and register to come.

As you (and a few other KOEB stalwarts) know, we have invited KO to join us at the conference, and have not heard back from either him or his agent. We will extend the invitation again tonight (probably after 9:00 pm Central time). I would love for as many KOEBies as possible to second the invitation. Saturday morning is set aside to discuss the role of the media in the post-election period and who better than Keith to keynote or participate in that session.

We expect people from at least 25 states, several foreign countries and the media from everywhere and anywhere we can find interest. It should be a worthy stage from which Keith could reflect on what it really meant to be the lone face airing the election fraud anywhere near the collective consciousness and where he thinks we are now. I for one (with nary a drop of estrogen closer than the doe bedding down in my dark, late winter Tennessee woods) would love to hear him speak, and to give him visible credit for what he has done (and still should be doing).

What say you, ladies? Ready to extend a group invitation to your man (and ours) to join us for some portion of three days of discussion on the 2004 election theft in Nashville in the early spring? I'm sure his ears are well tuned to your collective frequency, and he is curious (in a yellow striped tie) to put faces in front of the KOEB fragrance. So invite him to meet y'all under the dogwoods of middle Tennessee. We'd love to have KO at the conference and we'd sure love to facilitate some little (or big) KOEB "reality-based" interactions between yourselves, you fun-loving crowd you. (BTW, we're also working on music for Saturday night in sync with our purpose. Let's all visualize some Steve Earle and Emmylou -- now I'm really dreaming. )

Stay tuned -- the conference announcement will likely be a thread before the evening is over.

Perhaps she had too many revealing things to say about her captivity.
I'm not thinking our soldiers did it on purpose but perhaps the car was not given the clearance it was supposed to have going through the checkpoint, on purpose.

Our fabulous formerly freshmen quarterback and running back now have a year under their belts. It was a fluke that you won last year.

And, no, you can't have my tickets. I never said I didn't want to go to the game, just that my husband may not want to go.

OSU thumped U of M big time. Without a doubt they were the better team
that day.

BTW if they can stay out of trouble OSU will be loaded this season.
And your poor QB ..... never lost a game in High School & College until last
november.

182. Not true -- we lost to Notre Dame
earlier in the season. It never fails when we have a great season, we manage to screw up one or two games that keep us from the national championship. However, considering we lost our quarterback before the season started and wound up with a freshman, we really can't complain.

By fluke, I meant we had an off day -- OSU definitely was the better team that day, but certainly not for the season.

No, it's a Friday night custom here. On Friday, you go to a local restaurant or bar for Fish Fry. The beer-battered are the best. In some places, it's all you can eat. You get fish, some form of potato, and coleslaw. Tartar sauce on the side (I prefer lemon wedgies, myself).

Maybe Class Warrior can explain it better than I can. It is one of our finest customs - and (usually) there is no cheese involved.

You must the one who has the TV set that shows the gray suit as taupe, which would certainly improve its attractiveness. Yes, you're allowed to like it; we'll merely envy you your TV (which model comes with the "prettify unattractive colors" feature??).

I note that he wore the "purple" shirt/tie combo, a KOEB favorite, with the gray suit last night. Do you think he was trying to bring up the overall score of the ensemble by combining a popular shirt/tie with an unpopular suit? And why did he wear that suit on a Friday? He usually brings it out on Tuesdays, when I'm mercifully elsewhere and get forewarning of his wardrobe choice by reading the evening thread before watching the tape.

on edit: and is it just me, or do his teeth seem brighter? We jazzed him about teeth whiteners a while back and he made an aside to Musto about checking them out. I hadn't paid much attention to his teeth before that and he doesn't show his teeth that often but this week he's laughed openly a few times and I think perhaps his teeth are whiter. Whoever mentioned teeth in the first place -- have you noticed a change?

-- I even posted a link to a photo (now expired) at TVheads showing the suit to be indisputably TAUPE! LOL! Are we now to understand that my TV *and* my COMPUTER MONITOR are in league with Keith's "gray" suit in the suit's devilishly clever effort to disguise itself as TAUPE???

Why, the "gray" suit has even gone so far as to enlist the aid of OTHER ITEMS OF KEITH'S ATTIRE in order to rehabilitate its image!

315. maybe it's your color vision??
seriously, alhough he did wear a brown suit on the Leno show, that ain't the same one he had on last night, and I'm guessing there's about two dozen KOEBer's who would say there aren't any brown/tan overtones to the gray suit. I do remember a post a night or two back that had three pictures of Keith in the gray suit but none of them looked even vaguely taupe to me.

And yes, I like it when he smiles, and wish he did more often. Then again, the news lately hasn't given us that much to smile about. Boy, last night was nothing but fluff, which is not like him at all. What gives? Was it really that slow a news day?

What I think it is, gk --

KO has a number of suits all in the gray range -- some smooth, some textured, some uniformly gray, others tinged with another color (my taupe suit, for example).

I'm pretty sure it's the smooth uniformly gray ill-fitting suit that folks want KO to whisk off to the cornfield ("Twilight Zone" ref).

320. I think there are only two gray suits and one brown one
the brown one I would call a dark taupe. The light gray one is roundly (albeit not universally despised) and is definitely the same one he wore on "Jeopardy". There's another gray suit, a touch darker, with some greenish overtones, that's marginally more acceptable.

I think the problem with the light-colored suits may be exacerbated by KO's need for makeup. His skin is fair, so they have to make him up pretty heavily so he won't look washed-out under the lights. (Not to mention the need to conceal any Musto-induced blushing -- you can always count on him for a good zinger!) When he wears a dark suit, it all balances out fairly well and looks natural. When he wears a light suit, the makeup looks too ruddy, as if he's been knocking back three or four of Sparky's best right before the show, and you know how strong Sparky mixes his drinks. I expect if we ran into KO on the street in one of the gray suits, sans makeup, we'd find the suit much less objectionable.

... KO sneezes, and I get a cold.

All these potshots he's taking at the "playlist" recently... he's like those rock stars who get pi**ed when fans wanna hear their hits from 15 years ago and aren't interested in hearing new material.

A chill ran thru me at the conclusion of last night's show when he said, "...next time... if there *IS* a next time..." This, right after he turned down the live Martha coverage, dumping it on Abrams (who obviously wasn't thrilled w/ the assignment either, but sucked it up and DID it nonetheless).
I'm imagining behind-the-scenes discussions in which dissatisfaction at being forced to do the news "Olbermann-style" while not being the one to *DEFINE* Olbermann-style is the recurring theme.

322. I don't think there was anything too ominous meant by that
he usually has some sort of joke about whether or not the quiz will continue, but I think he actually enjoys doing the quiz in a weird sort of way. It's clear that he and Monica hit it off, probably because she's not afraid to give him shit.

Back when he was blogging about the election, Keith made it sound as if the folks at MSNBC were giving him a lot of discretion in which stories he covered but perhaps that latitude is not so broad as it once was. Given his past history of getting fed up with the Lewinsky tripe and quitting a show, I can understand your apprehension, but I don't think he's reached that point, although the MJ trial might end up being the straw that broke the camel's overly long spine. I don't think he'd up and quit outright, as he did before, but if someone else dangled a carrot under his nose -- come do this show on another network and you call the shots -- he'd be out of there. I only hope if he bails on "Countdown" that he goes straight into another project, 'cause I really enjoy his work -- wouldn't be be wonderful on something like "Nightline"?

... LOL -- your "straw that broke the camel's overly long spine" remark was well-put!

Something like "Nightline" might be one step forward but two steps back: on the plus side the show would appear in more markets (all the network affiliates); on the downside, the show would nolonger appear in primetime and be more subject to inhouse and FCC restrictions on all sorts of things, including "adult" talk (altho I can't believe the stuff Leno and Letterman are getting away with these days!)

334. it would be a blow to no longer be in prime time
although I understand he's doing great in the ratings on the late-night rerun. As far as the "adult talk" is concerned, his show is actually much "cleaner" than Leno's, especially when it comes to KO's language. Keith appears to have had George Carlin's "seven words" tattoed on his eyelids, which you would expect, given all the years he's been broadcasting.

If he bailed on MSNBC, and I have heard no rumors whatsoever that anything of that sort is in the making, I'd ideally like to see him go to another cable network provided the cable networks remain free of FCC restrictions. My first choice, believe it or not, would be CNN, because of CNN's market penetration, but I'd only want to see him go there if he had the freedom to do the stories he wanted the way he wanted to do them -- and the only way I see that happening is if he kicks Nancy Grace's butt in her time slot despite being on a network with smaller market penetration.

I believe the medieval knights tied their ladies' "colors" around their biceps... now THAT would be a total turn-on, if Keith wrapped the tie around his arm!

Perky girl is still mad at me for saying she wore too much pink and wore too much eyeshadow and she (or her evil twin, the one who wears more subdued colors and toned down eye shadow) has convinced KO not to retire it from his wardrobe just to mess with us.

I'm just kidding MN (if I don't apologize he may never stop wearing that thing). You are adorable, and Sparky loves you.

124. KOEB TIE Express
Edited on Fri Mar-04-05 09:03 PM by SaveAmerica
I have a crazy idea, AMTRAK from Miami to NY picking up KOEBers on the way. Maybe a side trip to Joisey? TIE = Truth In E-Journalism (it's the only thing I could come up with for E that would go with KO). Too bad I didn't think of it earlier it could have been planned to time with war protests in Fayetteville NC and DC this month. They both are on the AMTRAK I-95 route. All aboard?

Maybe several routes can be taken into DC for the protest and then to NJ/NY. No gas, no war (then KO for dessert)?

Otherwise, I'll stop and pick up Sharon on the way. And just imagine the trouble we'd get in along the way! Why, we'd have to stop in Ohio and find Mr. Blackwell, and give him a few of these: :spank:

on edit: at least some call it purple. I've noticed that colors look different on various people's TV sets. For example, there's someone (don't remember who, off-hand) who likes the much-maligned gray suit, but on her TV it looks taupe. Hell, if it looked taupe on my TV, I might like it, too, but it looks like old freeway concrete.

I'm hoping I can grow into this new system and really expand my horizons and stimulate my creativity. The computer is gorgeous - a 20" G5 iMac. Stunning! But so much to learn for someone who resisted upgrading as long and I could and now have to relearn EVERYTHING.

With my system upgrades, I should be able to actually SEE the photos at Olbermann.org, which I couldn't before. Not to mention turning back on the sigs, avatars, & images in DU threads. And the speed...well, let's just say AOL dialup is part of my PAST.

287. Hi Patsy! Yes, I 'm glad it's moving along
I do think we should make it flexible enough to include discussions that are not directly related to Keith Olbermann, or only tangentially related. The idea is to form a COMMUNITY with his show as the organizing focus, but we need to be open to discussing issues that he may not be able to get to in his show. This can sometimes go back to him in the form of a group email, for example, but sometimes we might decide to take other actions.

I think the idea of an active COMMUNITY with his show as a focus but not the only one is the main point. I'd like to see some of us get involved in, or at least discuss, activist projects that might be only tangentially related to Olbermann's show. There would also probably be threads that are apolitical, just intended to lift the spirits and reinforce the sense of the mutually supportive community. Is tthis kind of flexibility covered with the current wording?

Is there anything I can help with? Should I, now that I have a functional computer again, try to draft a short version of a mission statement? Or is this beyond that stage?

By the way, all of this is related to a Forum I am trying to get going, which I'd like to see called
Free Internet/ Free Press/ First Amendment Issues
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=120x30907

I think Skinner may create the group in the next day or two, but the mission statement, as written, wouldn't preclude the sort of activity you envision if there's sufficient interest among the members. Hop over to ATA and take a peek.

289. That's good news all around. This is going to be such a good thing.
There are a lot of people waiting to participate and who knows what we can accomplish IN ADDITION TO having a good time and supporting Keith! Thanks for all your efforts in this.

290. me? I haven't done much
except sit around and shoot my mouth off. Patsy's the one running interference with the administrators, although they aren't being difficult, merely prudently cautious. I think the last thing they wanted was for us to misinterpret our mission statement as a blank check to go forth and spam all the forums in DU with pro-KO messages.

291. oops - sorry, meant to post to Patsy. But you've played your part too
Yeah, I can see how they wouldn't want pro-KO spam, let alone unpredictable wandering :loveya: manifestations. Well, that's not a problem, we just need to convince them. People will come to US for the pro-KO manifestos and the :loveya:s !!!

301. Hi Judo Lady! Good to see you, and a heck of a lot easier now
my new computer is gorgeous, and my AOL dialup can now be relegated to the trash heap of things best left in the past.

Hope you have a great weekend. I'm going to be able to enjoy the next KOEB thread a lot more than previous ones because of the faster connection, and I have even been able to turn on avatars, images, and sig lines. Bliss!

I hated dial-up. I got rid of it about 6 months ago, and I have never looked back.

To your new life on the internets :toast:

278. Started a new thread in Media at:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=109x19430

Since I don't know how to do the photo thingies yet, I didn't use KOEB, which I hold dear to floatie heart conversations, "open bars" and liveblogs!

Just checked ATA....we're getting closer to a GROUP :)

Oh yeah, and sorry I'm late....

Great news about your mom, Rev !

Love the Choo-choo idea!!! I'm a NARP (not to be confused with AARP, which I'm also a member of), by the way, I LOVE AMTRAK! <----which is also getting screwed by BushCo.

Got my floatie heart MUGS from CafePress, my apologies who to thank, the transaction was very generic.

:loveya: To ALL

280. I think Skinner likes to lurk in the KOEB, too!
<"But if you want to post pictures and talk about crushes, that is fine."> But do we talk about crushes, or simply have them?? I'm a woman of action, and I prefer reality. :loveya:

We're going to get our group!!! I'm so happy! :) :) :)

Oops - gotta go - mom wants her computer back.

294. just doing a little clean up work
Edited on Sat Mar-05-05 02:30 PM by gkhouston
we all have to pitch in to pick up the slack when our number one bartender is away. (Hope he's having fun in RL and not sick or anything.) Although there are fewer bodices to pick up when Sparks is away, there are still plenty of dirty glasses to wash, and bleever can do only so much. Looks like things are moving forward on the group proposal so we may get our rec room soon. Woot!

ed: can't type for shit today

296. I hope sparky didn't suffer bartender burnout
He did get a nice foot rub the other night, as I recall. And ole Bleev, I think he was enjoying the spotlight last night. I looked like like his big brother had to lay the smack down on him

Anyway, I missed most of the party, but I'd be happy to help out with the dishes.

Proposed mission statement:

This Group is to help to promote the formation of an activist community around the support of the last consistently truthful TV journalist. Basically the Group will be intended to complement and extend the nightly KOEB liveblog thread. It's not JUST about Keith Olbermann, as we also cover territory he doesn't. He's the core theme, but a fully-formed community may be able to address some progressive issues even beyond what Keith says and does.

This really captures the essence of it, it's flexible but focussed. It's the COMMUNITY that's the key here, and the proposed MS makes that clear.

And thanks for everything you've done in this project. Now that I have a functional computer again, please let me know if I can help in any way.

You're the best, Pats! For you and for Skinner too: :loveya: :loveya: :loveya:

EDITED TO ADD: If I'm NOT on the list of 10 members backing this new Group, may I please be added? Even if I'm number 11? I'd be sad to be left out of this community action.
