Dean speech last night to MoveOn, including Election Reform:

Dean is 9 minutes and 40 seconds into the call.

He says we can no longer trust Republicans to count the vote, and that the way to address election reform is to put it on ballot initiatives, starting in California, where he suggests a provision similar to Oregon's: no electronic voting machines will be allowed than can not be hand-counted.

1. At our house party in Orange County, CA,
we immediately started looking toward the Dem Convention in LA in April. We are going 2 submit a resolution calling 4 the California Democratic Party to support a voter verified paper ballot initiative. We have the volunteers statewide and I know we can get the signatures. The resolution has 2 B submitted by the 15th so we're hard on it now!

I urge every person to get this started in your state - pester your Secretary of State, your state Democratic Party. We need this initiative on ballots in 49 states by the mid-terms in '06.

2. Wouldn't Arnold be a little upset with that?
There are rumors he had a little help from the Voting Machines.

(O.K. Wise-ass-attitude/sarcasm done now)

8. As a matter of fact, Arnold is doing everything he can to stop this effort
He and his thugs have pushed out Kevin Shelley, the CA Sec. of State that outlawed Diebold machines for the last election.

The media had started calling California a "swing state" until Shelley outlawed Diebold. As soon as Diebold was outlawed, the media went back to calling California a Blue State.

Because I was following the BBV efforts at the time, I was paying constant attention to the media spin. And, it was THE VERY NEXT DAY, after Shelley outlawed Diebold, that the media spin turned California back to Blue.

Does anyone else see a connection there?

10. That is an extremely telling incident. Have you written to Dean?
Maybe he doesn't know this, and I think if he did he would start to look deeper into the problem.

4. The 15th! Yikes!
Edited on Fri Mar-11-05 04:02 PM by Ojai Person
That is 4 days away. You must mean business down there.

On edit: What makes anyone so sure the votes will be properly counted for these initiatives? Or is it just that we have to go through these steps to finally convince higher-ups that democracy is in critical condition, not just "about to get sick"?

6. I haven't listened to the call yet, but several things strike me...
Why would Dean think that a citizen initiative would be needed in states like Calif with a Dem legislature (&, until recently a Dem Sec of State!), or, say, those with a Dem gov, or whatever (lots of Dem county registrars)?

He says it's the Repubs. Well, so...why aren't the Dems implementing reforms where possible, where they have power?

Say we get an initiatve on the ballot in Calif (not an easy thing to do--rules very stacked against the public). Then a whole raft of CA DEMOCRATIC politicians--Perata, Romero, McCormack, in collusion with their collegially confirmed new Repub Sec of State McPherson, and the Sac Bee and the LA Times and the SF Chron, come out against it; say it's not necessary; says it 's fatally flawed; say it will be too expensive, blah, blah, bla. I can just hear them.

Then what do we do, Howard, when Dems are the enemy?

Conyers recently said BushCons are going to kill election reform in Congress. I haven't heard Dean admit that (maybe he has, just dunno). Dean HAS said best bet is state by state--whhich means local grass roots. But I still don't get why INITIATIVES are necessary in states with Dem state power.

I'm feeling a litte sour today. I've been involved in a citizen initiative and frankly I think it's impossible without a very big zillionaire backer, and even then...

And I'm just so angry at HAVA corruption, at Dem leaders lying, at Dem leaders failing to cry foul on the fraudulent election SYSTEM...BEFORE the election, at Dem leaders support of Mideast war...

And then to be told that WE have to fix this with INITIATIVES...

Why isn't the Dem Party leadership in Calif SPONSORING an intiative to REMOVE BushCon control of central vote tabulators and voting machines...and to put the goddamned word BALLOT into our law...and to tell the BushCon Feds at EAC where they can stick it...

or why aren't they doing this as legislation?

and why are citizens having to fight backfires against the WEAKENING of our standards--backfires lit by DEMOCRATS?

Well, maybe we can still get things done in the CA legislature, despite all.

But I really have to wonder what Dean has uncovered, and what he thinks of it all--probably far more than the little peek at the stink pile that we've gotten here in Calif--and what Dean is up against, to have to ask the CITIZENS to do it, and NOT the elected Democratic leaders!

Whew. End of rant.

9. I think you are spot-on; have you considered writing to Dean about it?
I think you should pen a letter to him with these concerns. Perhaps he doesn't know all that he needs to know.
