Attn California: Help needed re: Possible Voter Registration Scam
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:12 PM by demodonkey

A Dem friend of mine is on the phone talking to my mother... this person recently moved to LA and got a job registering voters in malls. The firm hiring is "Elizabeth Barris and Associates" of Los Angeles (which I can not find anywhere by Googling).

Friend made $60 yesterday doing this. Here's the kicker -- My friend receives $1 per voter registered BUT ONLY IF VOTER REGISTERS REPUBLICAN. If they register Dem, Green, Lib, Independent, or ANYthing else -- friend gets NOTHING (and I have a bad feeling that those registrations are heading for the garbage, or at least will somehow be mis-handled.)

I believe CA law says my friend, as a paid registrar of voters, has to put their name & contact info on the form... so if anybody gets in trouble for late or lost form, I bet it will be my friend and not Elizabeth Barris and Associates!

Anybody have any info or thoughts about all this???

(And yes, I have already suggested to my friend to get another job.)

3. I am in Pennsylvania -- Do you know the exact CA statute regarding this?
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 11:26 PM by demodonkey

Is there a CA Electoral Reform group to report this to? I already looked at calvoter.org (don't see anything on there regarding reporting registration fraud.)

My friend just moved to LA from another state... a Dem, but not very political about such matters.

On edit: They ARE taking registrations from all parties (what they are doing with them after taking them is anybody's guess), but the employer is only paying for getting the Republican ones.

4. I don't know if the cops are the ones to deal with it.
I'd contact Conyers short of knowing how else to deal with that.

I wonder where are all the Dem applications are filed? Hmmmm? :grr:

5. Here's a link to the CA Attorney General's Office:

Bill Lockyer, our AG, is a Democrat running for Governor. He ought to respond to this issue. Please file a complaint and keep me posted on the results. I'm media chair for DFA in San Diego and will definitely rattle some cages. PM me with a copy of your complaint (including details on the company's contact info).

Note: In California, it's illegal to register voters unless you register all parties.

6. Call the Registrar of Voters for whichever county she is in
It could be Los Angeles County, Orange, Riverside, Ventura... have her talk to someone at the Registrar of Voters and ask questions, they should be able to answer or refer her to someone who can give the correct information.

8. In LA, that would be Conny McCormak.
:scared::scared::scared::scared::scared::scared:

Maybe Lockyer is a safer bet.

12. Not sure.
Overheard good, overheard bad, but haven't checked him out enough to go all bouncy frog one way or another.

That's why I was so attracted to the idea of higher and trusted authorities.

9. sort of sounds like the same tactics that were used by another
firm in Oregon and Nevada before the presidential election. Almost the same amount of money too.
