KOEB (Thursday)
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 08:15 PM by SharonRB
Hi, everyone!

:hi:

Oh, darn, I can't get the photos to work. Can someone post one?

http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=olbermann/v=2/SID=e/TID=I031_87/l=IVI/SIG=12fm47q2h/EXP=1112404395/*-http%3A//cache.eonline.com/News/Photos/o/olbermann.111098.jpg

Got it, I think. Ever since we got SBC/Yahoo, I can't get properties for photos. I had to open a second browser with Explorer to get it.

Fuhgedaboutit!

1. Hi EDVers!
What an odd, odd Countdown this will be.

Terri and the Pope (sounds like a religious singing group).

:hi:

:loveya: Keef - hope you enjoyed the Ann Coulter heckling video I sent. LOL!

Had a follow-up interview today with the funeral home/cemetery (marketing and administrative assistant). I should know something tomorrow or Monday.

Trust me, funeral directors have the best sense of humor, and can be totally irreverent at times. My kind of guys. ;)

Hope it turns out for you!

I've been praying he wouldn't die the same day as Terri. You know what the Neocons would do with that one. We'd never hear the ends of it -- a sign from above, yada yada yada.

27. I examined my priorites after 9-11, yikes,
..as most of us have. That day, I didn't know where my child was for 6 hours. (She was late for work, and she's fine).

If I'm coming across empty for the Pope and Terri, I do apologize to my KOEB brothers/sisters for sounding so shallow.

No offense at all. I was simply pointing out the irony that sometimes when our "icons" die, we need reminding about what real celebrity looks like. (Princess Di/Mother Teresa.)

Hey, did you ever get many responses in the KO GD thread? Or did it sink for lack of interest?

139. Yup, I'm ahead of you by a fair amount, all right
Maturity is a continuing process rather than an end, and you don't find that out until you get to where you expected to be old enough to BE there. One of life's little jokes, I think. Or maybe it's a kindness - I hoped long ago that I would be wiser now than I am.

Good to see you still here - I'm feeling somber after the day's national and world events, and I don't mean just about TS. Very scary, ugly stuff going on as the neocons do everything and anything to entrench their absolute power and the people around the American TV sets see Terri, Terri, Michael Jackson, Terri, random male and female bimbos, and smiling news faces saying it's all scary, but the administration is wise and will protect you.

32. I hope Michael Schiavo sues Hannity for slander, particularly
but, as the man just said, he's a "limited public figure."
However, I think an argument could be made that he didn't WANT to BE a limited public figure and those who slandered him made him so.

I have the same problem. I can only sort of see the TV in the family room from the computer room. We have no cable in here, so hooking up one of the small TVs in here wouldn't help me.

Nice to see another one of us will hit the big 1000 while we're together.

And there's Sparky behind the bar serving all of us in honor of Greylyn hitting 1000.

The little TV is sitting on a folding chair next to my elbow! And it has a better picture than our TV downstairs.

My husband cooks but cleaning is a great mystery to him. Seems like a lot of our players didn't even suit up tonight, likely because of what was on the program; can't say as I blame 'em. We had fish for dinner and ate while watching "Countdown" on tape; it was like a massive Lent flashback. :7

Only good news was that the Pope is apparently starting to respond to antibiotics and that's quite a relief. I know he can't have much time left and I hope he goes quickly when the time comes, but I was hoping that time wouldn't be today.

I said, "Well, I don't think he does because he makes fun of him all the time, but, actually, Keith doesn't vote."
And, my son said, "That's because he's a REAL newsman."

Newsman... LOL! I don't call him that, but, then again, one of my son's first words was, "Newsroom" (I was a reporter during my pregnancy. Upon being a stay-at-home Mom, I would STILL, after two years, forget when answering my home phone and say, "Newsroom. This is Lara." LOL!)

Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 09:13 PM by Greylyn58
he talked about how all the news reports gave Terri's time of death as 9:05am, 9:02am or sometime around 9am. Each one slightly different.

And he said the details that reporters try to add meant little to Michael Schiavo, the Schindlers, or any of her friends who knew or loved her because they had all just lost a friend, a daughter, a sister, or a wife.

I'm paraphrasing, but his sentiment was heartfelt.

88. I don't recall exactly
He said something of "the story" is that she passed at 9:05 EST, then it was changed to 9:02, and later stated that she passed at around 9:00 am. All these bits of information make up a story that reporters report, but it is just that, a story.

To the family, the time of death is of little consequence. To the family and friends, today is the day that Terry Schiavo died.

81. Keith writes the finest obits. I recall the one he did for Jerry Nachman -
-- and his gentle words at the death of Dick Ebersol's son in the plane crash last year.

Keith was given an Edward R. Murrow award for his radio commentary in the week or so following 9/11, and it was said his words helped a lot of people deal with that awful time.

Great writing from a fine man. :loveya:

His genuineness isn't hard to see, nor is his true sense of compassion. He also responds to what the situation really calls for, not to a preconceived ego-filled plan to make himself shine.

And yet some in the corporate media think it's just his oddball stories and funny comments that have won him his following. Shallow fools.

I can't see or hear him except through you people with cable.

Sounds like he did a fine job with closing out the TS story with the dignity and compassion she has been denied despite all the wailing posturing by the pseudo-religious. And maybe that will finally bring the reality of the story home to some people who had been carried away by the feeding frenzy carnival. I hope so.

105. The very first thing a real reporter learns how to write is an obit.
It's classical training to write both the standard obit for the obituary listings and the story obit for more "famous" people.

Shoot - I should have made a mention of that in my follow-up interview today at the funeral home. I could write all their obits without batting a lash.

Yeah, I need to see about Photobucket. I've got my own pictures that I'd like to share with you all in addition to these beauties on the web.

This picture of the ancient windmills quietly bathed in the glowing light is not only beautiful, but it is filled with archetypcal resonance that somehow felt right. So many symbols are embodied, and they speak of serenity, patience and the vast rhythms of life. And air itself - it is filled with atoms breathed by all those who came before us, and it flows on.

I love pictures taken right at sunset or sunrise. The colors are always so vivid.

Gorgeous!!!! Thanks for the picture. It gives me a real peaceful feeling.

84. A somber ending
One thing I really like about Keith is his principles. He tried to place things in perspective and give the family and Terry Schiavo a bit of respect and dignity. To so many, it is just a story, or a wedge issue to drive a political agenda. To the families and friends, no matter how they stood on the issue, they lost a loved one today.

102. Excellent way to put it. And not something often seen these days in
newsmen. More like what Walter Cronkite used to try to do sometimes: present the context and the larger picture, give a perspective that showed the significance that had been overlooked.

Well done, Keith.

90. Hi crispini! Greylyn hit 1000. Keith's reporting was appropriately subdued
. . . but he looked delish as always, kittycat tummy and all! :loveya:

94. We're still sort of quietly respecting what Keith did in his summing up
It was worthy of him and the situation. I hope it made some of the people who saw it stop and think before being hit again with the macabre carnival sideshow in the rest of the media.

103. I usually watch both showings of Countdown every night but
not tonight, too depressing. It makes me think of my aunt Mary who died of breast cancer which metastasized to her brain. Not a good way to go, and
thinking about the likes of that scuzzball Delay trying to rework the Judicial branch to his own liking makes me sick.

104. Another difficult aspect - the pope's speech supporting feeding tubes
Edited on Thu Mar-31-05 09:50 PM by Nothing Without Hope
and such as a "moral duty" to Catholics. More clarification of the official church policy is needed, but if what he said in this speech turns out to BE the policy, then Mrs. Schiavo's body would have had to be kept alive forever.

Very disturbing and sure to delight the neocons now and in their oppposition to progressive Democrats in future elections.

Read about it here, and be sure to read through the extra info in the replies:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3394734

I hope Michael Schiavo - is he Catholic? - isn't harassed about this.

Edited to add: This papal speech about life prolongation was cited in today's KO newsletter:
Pope John Paul II, now being fed through a nasal tube </id/7263878/> because of his throat problems, effectively wrote his own "living will" last year in a speech declaring some life-extending treatments a moral duty for Roman Catholics. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7344152

109. Yes - the whole family is Catholic.
Both the Schiavos and the Schindlers.

Michael is more of a progressive Catholic (like my family).

114. I'm afraid that the flurry of attention on the pope's remarks
is going to cause a disproportionately large amount of confusion and anxiety among Catholics worldwide. I hope there is clarification soon and that it is humane. One of the replies (#16, from Left is Write) in the thread I linked to on tihs gave an excerpt from the directive from their own church rules (I didn't ask which church that was, it would have seemed an intrusion):

My church's official position on end-of-life issues is lengthy, but I'll post the relevant excerpt here -

"When medical judgment determines that artificially-administered nutrition and hydration will not contribute to an improvement in the patient's underlying condition or prevent death from that condition, patients or their legal spokespersons may consider them unduly burdensome treatment. In these circumstances it may be morally responsible to withhold or withdraw them and allow death to occur. This decision does not mean that family and friends are abandoning their loved one."

This seems humane and well-considered to me.

117. He looks very grave, and the dark suit is as for a funeral, without being
too obvious about it. And that tie definitely looks striped to me, with a pattern similar to ours but dimmed down and subdued. A bright tie would have clashed with the occasion, I think.

118. all quite true. Hey, wasn't expecting anyone else to still
be here when I made my late drive-through. My husband and I had supper late tonight while watching KO on tape; we were playing Candyland earlier with someone small and demanding. ;-)

I'm off to read the thread. I see by the length that a lot of folk must be missing tonight.

kept them away. Keith did a good job, but people have had enough of this story.

I wasn't exactly HERE, I'm just checking by while reading other threads. Good to see you!
:hi:

Edited to add: I remember Candyland and a small demanding person. She really liked that one with picking cherries from the trees too. Good memories.
