CARTER COMMISSION Information and Fax #
Wanted to give a quick shout-out. I did some Carter Center homework and wanted to share. Apparently, the Carter Center is not involved at all in the American University Baker-Carter Commission
on Election Reform. I spoke with a Tanita in Democracy and she said while they are a non-partisan group, they are focused almost entirely on other parts of the world and have not received the charge
from Carter just yet to investigate US elections. She did highlight that Carter is doing this personally and that as a person, Carter is more willing to make partisan commentary on issues. She was
very kind and informative.

She said if we would like to educate Jimmy Carter on Election Reform activities to send a fax to his personal fax # and that is listed as 404.331.0283. She said we could wait a few days and
then call the Carter Center and ask to speak with the executive secretary to discuss the fax. That number is 404.420.5100. She also gave me the name of a person who hosted a seminar on US elections
David Pottie and his email is dpottie@emory.edu.

I suggest getting all of the 60 Reform organizations to start blasting faxes with real trench data about their 'citizen based' efforts to sincerely reform elections. I JUST DON'T THINK
CARTER (with the lack of mainstream press) understands the hundreds of thousands of us ordinary citizens that are working every day for election reform. I believe a somewhat coordinated (somewhat detailed)
massive education efffort by fax will go a long way to showing Carter the importance of this issue.

Let's discuss the right approach in tonite's call. We have a fax # and now let's go crazy!

1. Thanks for the information, I had sent an email to the Center
a few days ago, not knowing where else to get information to President Carter.

2. This is a fax that goes personally to Jimmy Carter
I think if we can get 60 organizations blasting him with data... he'll understand that citizens have taken it in their own hands because our 'unelected' officials are no longer the stewards of our democracy....

I wrote jimmy a personal note... about my dad and growing up in Georgia... I suspect personal letters are good to accompany whatever printed out data you are sending him..

good luck.. let's all send something before april 18th!!!!

3. This is valuable.
All of a sudden, thanks to the efforts of people like yourself, doors are opening....

like in California, we have about 10 assemblymembers who want to be on an election protection mailing list.

4. Jimmy Carter resigns from Carter Center
I don't know if the timing is purely coincidental, or if it frees him up in some way (devote more time to the commission, take a stronger position, etc.).

Jimmy Carter resigns from Carter Center

Atlanta, GA, Mar. 23 (UPI) -- Jimmy Carter has announced he and his wife have stepped down as leaders of the Atlanta-based Carter Center's board of trustees.

The former president said he and Rosalynn Carter will continue promoting peace, health, democracy, and advocating for the mentally ill as board members, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Wednesday. The former president said he and his wife stepped down to allow the board to play "a more prominent role in the governance and long-term mission of the center."

"Rosalynn and I see this as part of the ongoing process of preparing the Carter Center for the time when we no longer are active," Carter said in a statement. "As its founders, we know the Carter Center will always be linked to our identity and personalities, but we proudly recognize the center has expanded its reach beyond what the two of us contribute."

John Moores, owner of the San Diego Padres and recent chairman of the California Board of Regents, has been named board chairman.

BUSH PASSED OVER CARTER IN POPE FUNERAL PICK

President Bush selected his father and Bill Clinton over Jimmy Carter for the official delegation attending the funeral of Pope

John Paul II, the Carter Center claimed Late Tuesday.

"President Carter expressed to the White House a desire to attend the Pope's funeral," an official said.

Carter "was informed that the official delegation would be limited to just five people, and there were also others who were eager to attend."

"The Carters always relish the memories of Pope John Paul II being a delightful personal guest at the White House in 1979, on a pope's only visit to our nation's capital city. Subsequently, they <Carters> visited with His Holiness in the Vatican."

One senior GOP official said that Carter wanted to take his wife Rosalynn along, but was informed that would be impossible. It was unclear if Clinton asked to take along his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
