Dyer, a Democrat who had been suspended by Republican Gov. Jeb Bush when the charges were announced March 11, will be automatically reinstated as mayor with dismissal of the indictment. The decision also means there will be no May 3 special election to choose a temporary replacement.
The decision to drop the case was confirmed to The Associated Press by Bob Poe, former chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, who had spoken to Dyer. Prosecutors and lawyers involved in the case did not immediately return phone calls Wednesday, but prosecutors had scheduled a press conference for later Wednesday to make an announcement about the case. -- Associated Press
