. . . I was the little girl who had the back off the watch she got for Xmas before the holidays were over. And I fixed the bathroom scale when I was just a kid, too. Loved "Mr. Wizard" -- was he before your time? Loved to know how things worked.

Actually thought I wuz gonna be an inventor or an architect before social roles hit me smack in the face around age 11. :grr:

Now I just wanna take male chauvanists apart!

I'm glad your daughter will have more freedom than my generation did, to work at what she really likes. Esp. w/ men like Keith fighting alongside her in the workplace!

251. I don't remember seeing Mr. Wizard, so he must have
been before my time. Both of my parents were of the "get as much education as you can, get as much math as you can" for all their kids, irrespective of gender, so I pretty much ignored the social roles although my sisters didn't.

256. In "mid-century" America, ignoring the social roles wasn't an option.
. . . :banghead:

I was discouraged from taking CHEMISTRY in HS, can you believe it? (Defied the guidance counselor & my parents and took it anyway, striking a blow for women's independence.) Girls couldn't even take shop, facryinoutloud -- I would've been all over that, loved machines.

So when I heard people talking about the Taliban I said, well, it's just a point a little further on the continuum -- they just didn't STONE YOU in Ohio, is all! LOL!

260. I wasn't allowed to take shop, either.
Nor were we allowed to wear pants to school until I was in sixth grade. In ninth grade, I asked for permission to skip ahead and take a self-study math course. Didn't get it -- I was told there wouldn't be anything left to take my senior year of high school. I showed them my planned courses for high school and that taking the math early would permit a second year of physics or chemistry. Still didn't get permission, but two boys did. Things weren't that much better in the '70s.

271. The '70s were exciting & exhilerating for me, because that was my ...
. . . CONSCIOUSNESS-RAISING period.

Wanted to punch every man I saw (fortunately, this phase was mercifully brief). My male friends were very patient about the fact they weren't allowed in the women's action collective house ("women's free space"), but somewhat confused by all that was going on.

We all felt that we were part of something very important (guess, looking back, we were). Boomer feminists were pissed off so your daughter wouldn't have to be! }(

Yes, it might work with some guys but won't you just attract somebody you can intellectually wipe the floor with? Is that really going to do anything for you? If you're only looking for a roll in the hay, I don't suppose it matters much, but for anything longer than an evening's diversion, I think it will.

75. Thanks, that's my beloved Fritzie kitty with Sheridan
When my ex and I divorced, he kept her and I took Sheridan. I wanted to take her too, but could only have 1 pet in this apartment.

I think about her all the time. Although she may have passed on since then as she was 11 years old when we split.

Sheridan still loves kitties and when ever he sees one wants to love them. Unfortunately they don't always feel the same. :)

I try not to be the spelling police, unless the misspelling lends itself to a good play on words. I'm the world's worst at typing in the wrong word, correctly spelled. After her stand with the Reps on the Ohio vote certification, she's had queen status in my hero book, and she just keep demonstrating that it was TYPICAL of her to stand up like that against the outnumbering bullies. She's showing them all how to do it!

To borrow ClassWarrior's constant quote: Never Give Up!
She takes that to heart, so we all take her to OUR hearts. What a fine example she sets in so many ways.

frauds and hypocrites. I have to believe the people of this country are STARVED for integrity and logic and truth. Our 2006 and 2008 candidates need to be very un-shy about demonstrating this - and the Rethugs will then reveal themselves by they sickening way they react. Historically, "regular" Americans have always liked underdogs and the stories of good guys fighting and beating hopeless odds against bullies.

Hi Pats! I'm past the stunned/deer-in-headlights stage over Ratz today
Yesterday was pretty rough. It wasn't a surprise, but it sucked maximally. Still does, but I'm damned (appropriate wording I think) if I let that ice-hearted prick keep me down for more than a day. :grr:

He and his Opus Dei pals think they're the kings of the world of millions of faithful sheep now. I've got some news for them. Like someone here said yesterday, I hope he learns for the first time what real humility is. And maybe, just maybe opens his eyes and heart before his time at the pinnacle is over.

But whatever he does, the progressives in this world are not going to be held back. If he fights for hate and fear and suppression, he will only further erode the moral authority of his office.

don't believe they need to pretend to be unimportant and uninvolved any more. Plus, JP2 handpicked almost every one of the voting cardinals, and Ratz already had the real power anyway, so what could we expect?

But it was still a shock. Wake-up calls are like that.

And as for the Wonderbra commercial, you wouldn't need to see where you were going; it'd all come to you.

. . . funny religious overtones? Oh well, here it is (for some reason this reminds me of a brief but good scene in "Animal House," involving a cheerleader flying in the window and landing on a bed. You remember it, I know you do!) --

- - -
A man recently told a true story about the pastor of his church.

The pastor had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.

That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went "boing!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible.. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?"

She replied, "You won't believe this," and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it."

She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her."

Never underestimate the Power of God and His unique sense of humor.

138. Well, in that case, be sure to check out Fr. Guido Sarducci's comments
as recorded at Kos (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/4/20/9171/22203). This set doesn't mention the P--o--p--e either and they are hilarious!:

One of the bright spots of the papal overcoverage has been Father Guido Sarducci's reports "from the Vatican" on the Al Franken Show. Yesterday, for instance---we couldn't think of a better way to hear the news of Joseph Ratzinger's elevation than with Al and Father Guido providing a running commentary. It was perfect, and reminded us how much we love their dry humor. Here are some oldies but goodies from the man of the cloth we would've voted for in a heartbeat...

On The Last Supper: It was actually a brunch. The check reveals that one guy only had a soft-boiled egg and tea, while everyone else stuffed themselves. But when the bill was paid, it was divided equally. The moral: "In groups, always order the most expensive thing."

On The "Missing" Commandments: There were actually more than ten, but Moses was old and grumpy, and after he broke the tablets he could only remember the negative ones. "Don't do this. Don't do that." The truth is, most of them were more like advice. The Twelfth Commandment, for example, was "Whistle while you work." (People think its from Disney, but Disney stole it from God.)

On Getting to Heaven: Life is a job. You get $14.50 a day, but after you die, you have to pay for your sins. Stealing a hub cap is around $100. Masturbation is 35 cents (it doesn't seem like much, but it adds up). If there's money left when you subtract what you owe from what you've earned, you can go to Heaven. If not, you have to go back to work. (Sort of like reincarnation---many nuns are Mafia guys working it off.)

107. Ooops -- I think I have to go
I'll see you all Friday. My F*g husband was fooling around with something in the entertainment unit and did major damage. The speaker fell off the shelf onto a shelving unit and broke my grandmother's antique vase, a ceramic figure my parents brought me from Israel and my favorite Metropolitan glass 40s plate. I'm so pissed right now I could scream (and I did). He also managed to disconnect the TV at the same time and now he can't figure out why it's not working. He's so damn clumsy -- never thinks about what might happen when he starts screwing around with things and always manages to break someting.

Been planning a trip to Manhattan for several months now. Even a roach infested share-a-bath hotel room can be pricy. There's a new Hampton Inn in midtown but it's around $200.00 a night. People in Manhattan rent out their apartments but there's no big price break there. You can pay $1,700 a week in the Upper West Side.

Yet another classic show, from KO himself (the DeLay-Bolton line was only the start of it all) to the imaginative on-screen titles ("Dei One," "Grease Is the Word") to the musical selections, and only one visual flub. We have a winner!

Gizmo was doing ok when I got home (long day away, longer than planned) He was happy to get out of the cage. <<<cute warning>>> littlest (size wise 1.2 lbs) ferret Jinx was trying to get on the couch and fell off and is now having a hissy fit and attacking the mean old couch. Swear if ferrets were 100 lbs instead of 1.5 to 4 lbs they would rule the world. No fear at all in them. I am going to crawl into bed and try to stay awake for the late show. Night all.

259. Aww... "In Bed w/ Ferrets"-- sounds like Rev. Falwell's worst nightmare!
. . . Good that Gizmo's snark is returning. He already probably has the eyebrows for it!

:loveya: for Giz
:loveya: for Jinx

Happy Keith dreams to you, Ferretessa -- after the show. You MUST stay awake if you can, or TAPE if you can't. It was that good!

I can think of a long list of people out there I'd like to invite to jump into it.

264. Let me praise this photo in classic British fashion: "MOST impressive!"
. . . Only the "landscape" that started the thread tonight beats this one. ;-)

268. Yeah well, that manscape - er- landscape is unfair competition!
I mean, trees and water are one thing, but Keef served up on the grass...
:woohoo:

(The landscape photo was unfortunately not mine but was from that site that has so many lovely free wallpapers - http://www.northernlandscape.co.uk )

283. For if or when
the nightly meetings move to the club house. Give the Keith duck a stick with his "belongings" wrapped in cloth on the end and text the KOEB is moving to the clubhouse on and what ever date is decided, with floaties of course. You know all the vixen would follow Keith.

288. Sounds like a plan
I do need to go at least put my feet up. These all day/half the night walking on concrete floors in the dungeons is getting hard on this old body. But May 15 in coming and off all summer after that so will survive. (Cept for the self employed thing and well that is taking pictures and fun)

Going to say goodnight, and won't be here tomorrow night for the show either,so will hopefully be back to watch with everyone Friday.
