Subject: URGENT-- Andy Stephenson Update -- MORE HELP NEEDED -- URGENT
Reply-To: prodemocracy@topica.com

As most all of you know, Andy Stephenson has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He has no health insurance and his friends are raising money so that he can have the operation he needs to save his life.

As of Friday PM, we have raised over $32,000 toward a $50,000 operation, and Andy is scheduled for surgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore this Tuesday May 10.

On Friday afternoon, the hospital called and stated that if full payment of $50,000 is not made by Monday, Andy will be removed from the surgical schedule!

PLEASE help us NOW to raise the additional money we need to help Andy.

And please blast this e-mail and this information to everybody you know, every list, and every person who might be willing or able to help.

THANK YOU!

--------------------------------------------------------

From William Pitt--

Those familiar with the fight against electronic touch-screen voting machines will know the name Andy Stephenson. Andy has spent the last several years traveling from hoot to holler and back to hoot again, trying to inform people of the dangers these machines pose to the fundamental principles of participatory democracy. He even ran for Secretary of State in Washington using this issue as the basis of his platform.

A few weeks ago, Andy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, one of the more dangerous varieties of the disease. His doctors told him he needed a Whipple procedure to get at the tumor, and only a few hospitals in America can perform this complicated procedure with the required competence. To compound the problem, Andy shares the plight of millions of others in our disgusting for-profit health care system and does not have health insurance.

A friend with connections was able to get him a slot at Johns Hopkins, one of the premier medical facilities in America that specializes in Whipple procedures. Johns Hopkins, however, required a $25,000 down-payment before they would let Andy onto an operating table. Furthermore, they required the payment immediately, and wanted another $25,000 once the surgery was done. Andy and his friends spiraled into despair as they faced this seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

And then, something remarkable happened. Friends of Andy posted the details of his plight on a few Left-leaning websites. Left-wing talk-show hosts Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann filled their listeners in on the situation. Donations for Andy started to come in, and then pour in, and then flood in. People without jobs, and themselves without health insurance, raided their piggy banks.

Within 100 hours, Andy Stephenson had the $25,000 down-payment he needed to save his life. It came as nickels, as dimes, as dollar bills, but it came.

The moral? That which unites the Left is far, far greater than that which divides them. Yes, there are seemingly insurmountable obstacles standing in the way. Yes, frustration and despair are rampant. Yet when the righteousness, passion and strength of the Left are combined, they can stand up next to a mountain and chop it down with the edge of their hand.

So We Raise it.

6. T his is beyond despicable. We need to think of an appropriate way
to publicize this outrage, once Andy is safely in and out of Johns Hopkins.

How many Americans still believe the fantasy that if you really need medical care you will get it?

the rest by the time they did it.

9. That wasn't my understanding...
We knew from the beginning that the total needed was $50K. He had to have the first half by last Monday to get admitted and in line for surgery. The second half is due this Monday, prior to the surgery actually being done. I never understood anything different.

19. Thank you for the explanation
Thank you, Fly, for all that you have done for Andy--for the risks you have taken--and for explaining why JH appeared to be chaning the date when it needed the rest of the money.

You are also correct about this type of cancer--very deadly. But Andy has now been given his opportunity to live and that opportunity comes both from the medical intervention and from all of us surrounding him with our love and good wishes.

But first, we have to raise the money!!!

20. You put a lot on the line for Andy.
And I really hope your husband's boss calms down after we get the money together...whew! What you did may seem "wrong" to some people, but IMO the fact that people can't get the medical care they need is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! A few lies are nothing when it comes to saving a life. I don't know if I would have had your chutzpah, but I'm glad somebody did.

The deadline is THIS Monday by noon? I'm getting ready to fire off an e-mail to everyone on my list. I'm getting the facts right.

I'm glad so many people are "up" because I'm feeling powerless and down at this point. I'll still do what I can. :)

However, I am not going to let JH off the hook; they're extremely well endowed and have a mission to serve. But that's a rant for another day and another place.

thank god for miss waveryly..she may have saved our andy!!

miss waverly knew all about the program of this doctor at JH and miss waverly may be angry at me for saying so...but she got andy the info about this doctor..and the vaccine program!

and this lady is the best!!..and miss waverly will be at JH to check up on andy and make sure he is cared for well..

and i send you dear, my biggest hugs!!

but some times it takes powerful people to get others to the best people for care..is that right..hell no its not right..but go fight your government about that..this is not the time to get angry..this is the time for all of us to pitch in and help andy get his surgery..we can all fight the government after we succeed in that!!

no one should have to go through this..no one...but this is the damn system we have and sometimes we have to do.. what we can do ..to survive this system!!

8. Have donated, and will again (waiting on a check to clear the bank) but:
Has Andy/anyone with ability to speak for him brought this to the attention of the Ethics Committee? This seems like a gross violation of the basic tenet of the hospital, which is that patients must pay their bills in a timely manner (not extort money by threatening to deny service after it's half paid for.)

I found this at the website: http://www.hopkinshospital.org/patients/other_services.html
Ethics Committee
Decision-making can be difficult when it comes to matters of health care. If you need to discuss an ethical issue related to your care, a member of this committee is available by beeper at all times. Dial (410) 283-6104, and after three beeps enter your phone number and then the pound sign (#). An ethics committee member will return your call.

This just seems very extortionate to me; perhaps there's a criminal case to be made against the billing department? Since JHM has one of the wealthiest foundations in the country supporting it (I heard an NPR report a year or so ago that said basically, they can live on the interest now) this seems just excessively greedy.

10. There has been NO extortion, folks....
A friend of one of our DU members gratiously got Andy admitted to Johns Hopkins. Normally, that wouldn't happen for someone without insurance. This is a surgery with a high degree of difficulty and there are only a couple of doctors in this country who can do the procedure that Andy needs. And it's a very expensive procedure. Let's stop bad-mouthing Johns Hopkins, folks. I don't think we're doing anyone any favors by making unfounded accusations.

Let's also not forget that these people are going to be cutting on our friend in just a few days. It'd be nice if we were nice to them. Don'tcha think?
