Bob Fitrakis: I think that’s what all the evidence points towards. This parallels Katherine Harris in Florida in 2000. It’s as though Karl Rove, who’s always pushed the edges of the political system and the law, realized that the key person to getting reelected is having the secretary of state in your corner. Blackwell really was engaged in activities that made papers like The Columbus Dispatch, which hasn’t endorsed a Democrat since Woodrow Wilson, question his behavior.

Did Blackwell break the law?

Well, in an all-Republican state, where every state official, including the attorney general, is a Republican, I don’t know what he would have had to do to break the law . His daily activities seemed to me to be violating the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and again, the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It seemed that, routinely, he was violating due process and equal protection. This is not a conspiracy theory. It's a hard fact. A handful of Republican-owned and foreign corporations completely control America's voting system. And the Democrats are letting them get away with it. Incredibly, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) approved of Internet voting in the Arizona Democratic Primary in 2000. And current Democratic National Committee chair, Howard Dean, along with fellow presidential candidate Wesley Clark, supported Internet voting in the Michigan Primary 2004, over the objections of other presidential candidates.

Instead of demanding paper ballots and hand counts, the DNC, Democratic legislators, and many voting rights activists are proposing ballot printers, spot audits, and early voting. These are not the answer. They will not give the voting process integrity, security, or legitimacy.

It's not just political races at risk. The expanding use of the Internet to elect the leaders of our civic associations, business groups, and labor organizations, threatens the very fabric of our society. In the spring of 2003, Election.com, an Internet voting company, was purchased by Osan, Ltd., a group of Saudi investors. Election.com has about 600 customers who use its Internet voting service, including the DNC, the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, the Sierra Club, and the Florida Bar.

America is in a meltdown. And the world is watching. We are a nation of haves and have-nots governed by lunatics and liars. I don't know if Bush and his neocon friends are completely incompetent, criminally insane, or just really, really evil. Whatever the case, I'm afraid that another un-natural disaster, worse than Katrina or 9/11, is just around the corner.

According to published reports, the Bush Administration has developed plans to nuke Iran back to the Stone Age, an act which could take a large part of the region with it. Many observers believe that Bush wants to invoke Marshall Law here as well. Rumor has it that Bush will use a 'staged' nuclear attack on the U.S. as pretext for his pillage. It will be an inside job, but blamed on Iran. State-sponsored terrorism against a nation's own citizens is a familiar ruse. Most people won't have a clue, thanks to our criminally-complicit corporate news media.

To succeed with such as plan, Bush would need to hold the American public under tighter control than ever before. To that end, much has been done. America is already a corporately-controlled nation. During elections, domestic and foreign corporations electronically process over 80% of all voters' ballots with no meaningful oversight or transparency possible. Corporations own most of the news media and telecommunications. A private Internet (Global Information Grid, or GIG) is currently under construction for use by the military and government only. So, the public Internet could be shut down easily. Meanwhile, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has reduced bandwidth for ham (shortwave) radio operators, further restricting low-cost public communications.

Dems Turn Scandal Focus Toward Petro

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The heat in Gov. Bob Taft's office has been turned down a little.

Now, Statehouse Democrats have their sights on the Republican who wants to replace Taft next year - Attorney General Jim Petro.

For months, Democrats in the Ohio House and Senate have ravaged Taft over the investment scandal that has been emerging since April. But in the last two weeks, they have found plenty to fire at Petro, one of three statewide officeholders seeking the GOP nomination next year, along with Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell and Auditor Betty Montgomery.

Petro has noticed.

"It's not my favorite position to be in," Petro said last week.

This time, the state has lost at least $300 million in investments made by the Bureau of Workers' Compensation, the state insurance program for on-the-job injuries. Taft has been convicted and fined $4,000 for failing to report gifts that included free golf outings.

Few Americans know about the historic event that happened on January 6, 2005, the official date for counting electoral votes. For the first time since 1877, congressmembers challenged the electoral count. Representative Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Ohio, accompanied by the lone senator, Barbara Boxer of California, led the challenge to the Ohio vote count. Although massive fraud was reported around the country, only Ohio was officially cited.



It is curious that an issue so profound and consequential is barely on the radar screens of most Americans, especially those who supported Kerry.



Though we are not certain of the actual outcome, statistically impossible discrepancies exist between results of exit polls and official counts in counties without paper trails. Also documented are patterns of anecdotes about corrupted procedures and accounts of strange behaviors, phenomena and illegal interventions in Ohio, New Mexico, Florida, Pennsylvania and other places. Many say there is fraud in every election, but there was far more in 2004 than in any previous year, and if the errors were random, about half would go in Kerry's favor. Virtually all went in Bush's favor.



But rather than demanding a thorough investigation, the many Americans seem eager to forget the incidents and put the election behind them, thus implicitly supporting such corruption. In my conversations, I observed that white, US born males were more emphatic about accepting the outcome and the futility of challenging it, while others were more willing to recognize being dominated and open to questioning what happened. White males may be more susceptible to obeying patriarchal authority, and the fish does not know it is swimming in the water. This difference was reflected in Congress. Women and members of the Congressional Black Caucus were most active. Representative John Conyers lead the investigation and press conferences, and women, Stephanie Tubbs Jones in the House and Barbara Boxer in the Senate led the historical challenge.

The Courageous Minority



The reactions listed above are completely natural. Carl Jung said that consciousness is a work against nature. To go against the collective tide of ignorance, conformity and cowardice is a work against nature taken on by the courageous few. This collective, archetypal drama described by Jung was popularized by Joseph Campbell in The Hero's Journey. The Hero is the one who is willing to take on challenges that most people fear. According to Jung, the hero archetype represents the progressive force in society.



The people I have witnessed working intensely to investigate and challenge voter fraud have a particular psychological profile. They are courageous and willing to face pain and fear. They call up their strength to challenge authority, as our lives, our freedom and democracy depend on it. They are unable to deny what is going on or remain silent. They are heroes in our mythical, archetypal Hero's journey, willing to face the dragons that are guarding our "National Treasure."



They are acknowledged in a piece by William Rivers Pitt called "Heroes" on Truthout.org. Pitt quotes Bob Dylan: "I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom."



Only by facing the pain can we transcend it. Consciousness is the first step. Action is an antidote to depression. It would be a sign of health, freedom, and conscious evolution if more people could muster up the courage to face the painful truth of what is happening in our country and support the great work of those courageous souls--who are not nuts or conspiracy theorists, but evolved, conscious, healthy leaders taking personal risks and sacrifices to elevate our democracy, restore our integrity and ultimately to increase our security on the world stage ... if we let them.

They may have lost the vote in the Congress but at least they got a vote on impeaching the President, Arroyo, for election fraud. Oh, there’s just a tape of her putting in the fix when she was behind. But, well, “they” control the legislature. So what, these folks fought and they’re not giving up.

MANILA, Philippines (Reuters) -- The Philippine opposition conceded defeat on Tuesday in a vote on whether to impeach President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, but said it would keep up its campaign to unseat her through the courts and in the streets.

With over half the 236 lower house votes cast, only 31 lawmakers had voted to impeach Arroyo over allegations of electoral fraud and graft, leaving the opposition well short of the 79 it needed to send Arroyo to a Senate trial.

"We may have lost, we may have not gotten the 79 signatures, this does not mean that Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has won," lower house opposition leader Francis Escudero said in a speech.

"The search for truth is not yet over, the president and her allies will be haunted by the accusations ... it will hound her wherever she may go."

It's hard to overestimate the importance of the battle in American history. It secured the Louisiana Purchase. In terms of American nationalism, it gave people a sense - you know, the outcome of this battle and the outcome of the war has been called a second American Revolution, a kind of a feeling of having decisively defeated the former Mother country.

New voting law sparks lawsuit, racial tension

ATLANTA -- Opponents of a new Georgia law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls are planning a federal court lawsuit challenging the measure, which they fear will lower voter turnout.

Under the bill, polling stations would no longer accept forms of voter identification like Social Security cards, birth certificates or utility bills.

A news conference to discuss the lawsuit is set for today, said state Rep. Tyrone Brooks.

Under the Voting Rights Act, Georgia and other states with a history of suppressing minority voting must get federal permission to change their voting laws.
