VOTER ID

Technology could play a big role in process

The Sept. 25 editorial "Demagoguery on voter ID" contained several good points about problems an ID card can't correct. It didn't propose any new solutions. I suggest that the Journal Sentinel stop engaging in name-calling and remind the people in both political parties that present technology can cure the problems.

It seems that race is the real issue

Thomas Serio's Sept. 28 letter regarding the voter ID bill showed once again how the facts have little do with people's opinions on the issue ("Realistic solution to fraud is needed"). The real issue seems to be race. According to Serio, African-Americans vote for Democrats because of "entitlement" they've been given. He also implied that voter fraud exists within the African-American voting bloc in Milwaukee.

At least Serio is honest enough to admit that the voter ID bill's true purpose is to reduce Democratic - read African-American - votes in the city of Milwaukee. Nowhere in his letter did Serio point to any evidence of voter fraud in the African-American community. That's because numerous investigations, including those conducted by the Republican U.S. attorney, have found that Republican allegations of voter fraud were themselves fraudulent.

Yes, racial history is basis of mistrust

I think it is telling that on the day the letters to the editor section was full of people calling for a voter ID law, there was also a column explaining the feelings of the Hmong community in relation Chai Soua Vang's murders of fellow hunters.

These two topics are related. Whether or not we agree with a voter ID law, we should all at least acknowledge the reasons some people are afraid of it. These are the same reasons that cause an unstable individual, such as Vang, to commit murder.

Standing in line recently at the local DMV I spent 1 hour and 20 minutes to get a replacement title for our car. As I was looking around I saw several people leave, why? They have jobs and they can't spend 2 hours at the DMV to get an ID card! And that would be assuming that they had transportation and lived anywhere close to an office.

The real problems, as I see them are in the tabulation process and until that is corrected, that is, it is no longer owned by the GOP then we are dead in the water. I just saw the new site givemhellharry.com and that is great and he has a good message and good intent but it doesn't mean jack if we don't have the vote!

Almost daily I get frustrated by the way that the Dems have turned the other cheek and are not even discussing the vote. It makes me crazy. Don't we get it folks, no vote means the GOP does whatever they damn well please and the people of the US and the world have no recourse. The courts are owned by the GOP, and the Congress as well which means there are no checks and balances. No vote equals no democratic republic!

Anyone else feel the frustration mounting as we approach the 2006 election? I don't even know if I will vote, I can't believe that I actually feel that way , but I do feel it doesn't matter because my vote won't be counted the way it was cast, even if it is tabulated correctly locally, it could be switched when the numbers go to the central tabulation.

Ugghhhhhh! Some days I just feel like I am screaming into a black hole!!

Reformers question Blackwell's motives

COLUMBUS - Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell would never have to live with what Reform Ohio Now may have wrought, but the proponents of a constitutional amendment stripping his office of its election oversight role make it clear this is aimed squarely at him.

As with Katherine Harris in Florida in 2000, Mr. Blackwell's affiliation with the Bush campaign in 2004 made his decisions affecting the election immediately suspect, even when courts agreed with him.

Perception is everything, noted Edward Foley, an Ohio State University law professor specializing in election law.

"You have to prepare for election-related storms the way you prepare for natural storms," said Mr. Foley. "First, you build the levees. In the context of the election, you build your system, getting the right number of machines in place, getting registration lists accurate....

ACCURATE's comments on EAC's federal voluntary voting system guidelines

Last Friday the Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic, on behalf of ACCURATE, submitted comments to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission regarding proposed federal, voluntary voting systems guidelines, designed to update the 2002 voting system standards.

ACCURATE is the acronym for a new, multi-university collaboration funded with a $7.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation. ACCURATE stands for "A Center for Correct, Usable, Reliable, Auditable, and Transparent Elections" and includes several of the leading academics in the nation engaged in voting technology issues, such as Avi Rubin, David Dill, Dan Wallach and Doug Jones. The voting system comments supplied by ACCURATE are a thorough and thoughtful 50-page analysis of the federal government's draft standards, and I was pleased and honored to endorse them on behalf of the California Voter Foundation.

The launching of this new center is one of the most exciting and promising developments in the voting technology arena this year. For more details about ACCURATE, visit the center's web site or see the August 15 news release issued by Johns Hopkins University.
