1. Verified Voting -- whoa, a positive focus on a goal...
Hey, I like it. So sue me. Of course, from "2" to "V" is quite a come-down.

21. I hope this doesn't mean that they expect us to stop
investigating the 2004 election -- or any election for that matter.

3. I do NOT like it - we cannot stop investigating past fraud -
It is ridiculous to think that meaningful reform will happen; that the theives will stop stealing unless we confront them head on.

"Election Fraud & Verified Voting" would be my strong preference.

5. Now "Election Reform" -- but who said we stop investigating?
You can follow the thread that meganmonkey linked to -- nothing is written in stone.

It seems to me that we agree more about the future than we do about the past, and it's not a bad thing for the forum name to reflect that. But that doesn't mean that we can afford to ignore the past, even when we disagree about it.

8. I threw in my 2 cents because nothing is written in stone
right now. I think "Election Reform" is a better title than "2004 Election Results and Discussion" -- I think still better would be "Election Fraud & Reform." The analogy I have used before still works for me: If a woman has been raped you don't send her to self-defense lessons immediately after she is released from the hospital. First, you hunt down the rapist and punish them (in an ideal world). Then you send her off to self-defense lessons. If you don't punish the cheaters they will simply cheat in a different, bigger way the next time. JMO.

it being the MOST important issue we address!

11. yeah, I was encouraging you to throw in your 2 cents
(although I also reacted to a particular point). I like your suggestion about equally much; the admins are trying to keep everything as short as possible, and I think that's OK, but I'm not invested in it. We'll talk about fraud either way.

13. Short is good - if we come to some general agreement
we could ask the Admins en masse. The last time they tried to change the title a lot of people freaked out and attacked the Admins -- so they changed it back to "2004 Election Results and Discussion."

I don't want this to turn into a confrontation over a little issue -- I do think that the title is sort of a "mission statement" - it matters.

6. How about "Election Integrity"?
Edited on Thu Oct-06-05 06:05 PM by demodonkey
That's the name for this movement that I am telling everyone these days.

Can include fighting fraud, fighting bad machines, GOTV, helping the disenfranchised, etc. All are activities that promote integrity in elections.

19. Do you know of anyone doing exit polling in NJ?
I'm trying to spearhead a Parallel Election Project in NJ. I posted here here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=203x396339

also posted same in NJ forum.

I have floated different variations of this idea over the past couple of weeks and have been met with silence for the most part.

Please help me find a voter integrity group in NJ who would be willing to help me take this on somewhere in NJ for the Gov election.

15. "Election Results and Discussion" would carry the energy of this
forum best, I do believe.

"Verified Voting" seems to miss the rich historical body of work this forum has brought forth.

Admins: Please reconsider. Continuity and the ongoing story of the last election really are better served by shortening the name to "Election Results and Discussion".

It could even be shortened to "Election Results"; the discussion would follow without prompting. :)

And thank you.

Un-verified Voting is much more in tune with the status quo and it also points the way toward the needed improvements.

What do y'all think?

17. ah, we're behind the curve -- current proposal is "Election Reform"
which is an improvement over Verified Voting IMO.

In the context of the other forum names, I think "what we're for" fits better than "what we're against." Say there were a Creeping Tyranny forum -- what kind of person wakes up energized to post to that?

Of course I could argue it the other way, true to my screen name.

Edited on Sat Oct-08-05 01:50 AM by Bill Bored
but as far as "Creeping Tyrany", I think we'd get pretty much the same folks who've been posting here all along actually, and maybe a few more Republicans who will think it's cool! ;)

27. I would vote strongly for election integrity
Verified Voting is an excellent name and that's why VerifiedVoting.org and Verified Voting Foundation use it. Their focus and the focus of the name is on voting technology issues - how votes are cast and counted. Extremely important but a little narrow for the wide range of issues of concern on this forum.

Election Reform is too general - lets face it Voter ID requirements can be construed as a "reform" of election laws. Also it points only forward - which I think is important but I also agree that we have to continue investigating past elections as well.

Election Integrity focuses on the transparency and accuracy of elections both past and future and also has a positive frame.
