My election judge was interested in info about election security risks, our voting machines and their tabulation process. We use the E slate (by Hart i think)..
Please help me compile links that i should send him. My first three below...

1. Well, as we've previously discussed...
I suggested that they be informed that the "ballots" on the screens have absolutely nothing to do with how the votes are counted in the database and having a printout of what the ballot should look like means nothing because it's all eye wash.

In TX, where Straight Party voting is legal, the machines should be tested to make sure every candidate in every party is included in the appropriate straight party options. I.e., you shouldn't have George W. Bush included in the Repub straight ticket and Kerry excluded from the Democratic one. (And Bush should not be included in the Democratic one either of course!) And the same should be true for the down ticket races, unless they are non-partisan.

This has to be checked by casting REAL fake votes on the machines and NOT by looking at some printout of what the ballot on the screen should look like or running some self-diagnostic test script or "logic and accuracy" test. This is probably something that an election judge could do, or should be trained to know how to do. Bet they ain't though.

The other way to check this is to look on the server where these ballot definitions are programmed, but a local election judge may not have access to that.

2. Oh, and the other thing is
the precinct totals should ALWAYS be checked against the central tabulator totals. While this would only rule out fraud at the central tabulators, as demonstrated by Bev Harris and Howard Dean, NOT checking it is an open invitation to fraud.

But if ballot definitions are screwed up, precinct totals will ALWAYS match tabulator totals and the count will still be corrupt. Not easy keepin' track of all this e-votin' is it?
