please let me know that the download and burn goes OK. You're probably one of the first to download the new version and I just want to make sure it's working. I've downloaded it twice with no problems. -----------thanks

6. Download status report
The download was fine, though lengthy. I didn't realize what I was getting into or I would have tried the FTP instead. Anyway, I wrote the file to the CD and that completed OK too. Now, however, I can't make it play. Everything I've tried leads to the computer telling me it has no program for this file type. What should I associate with .iso?

More importantly, what do I tell people I'm giving this to so they don't think I've wasted their time? The disc you sent me when the first version came out had no problem playing. I still have that but don't have the means to dupe it here tonight. I need another CD for tomorrow morning for an interview with a local reporter.

7. how to burn an ISO file:
Hey Guv

you just missed one step in buring the ISO file to the CD.

you can't just put the ISO file itself onto a CD. here's what you do:

1) open your CD burning software
2) look for something called "BURN IMAGE TO DISK"
3) it will ask you what image file you want to use. navigate to the file you downloaded, and click OK

that's it.

I'm guessing instead of what I listed there in step #2, you basically made a data disk of the ISO file. This would result with the ISO file itself being on the disk. That's not what you want. The ISO file is a special file that contains everything on the disk. It's sort of like a zip file. You have to use the software to "burn IMAGE FILE TO DISK" rather than just putting the ISO file on to the disk.

to make sure I'm right, take the disk you tried to make and put it in your computer. Use "My computer" to look at the files on the disk. Do you see a single file named something like election2004.iso and nothing else? If so, that's the problem. You can't just put the ISO file on to the disk, you have to use "burn image to disk" When you do that, the program will first "unzip" all the contents of the ISO file and then put it on the disk. Then you'll be set. Please let me know how it goes. If you have a problem still, let me know what program you use to burn the CD and I'll look up the location of the "burn image to disk" utility. Every CD burning program I've ever seen has it, so it should be there..

thanks
g

8. I get it. But what about FTP?
Your explanation makes sense since I did try to do this in one step directly to the disc. If I'm going to have to download again, I'd like to use FTP this time. I don't see info that tells me how to access that site and file. I have an FTP client. How do I dial in here? Thanks.

9. you don't need to download it again
if you have the ISO file, you're set. you just need to use the CD burning software the right way.

Don't worry about ftp vs. http. it's just a different protocol to transfer the same file. it makes no difference. ftp might be a little faster in some cases but I find it's virtually the same. if you want to try it just for fun, you can click on the ftp link. you'll see the files there and you can click on the ISO file and download it, just like you did with the http. You wouldn't know it was transferring by a different protocol. the only real difference is that with FTP you can access the files by a different method, with an FTP client, if you know the FTP server name and the location of the files on the server. It's a waste of time unless you already have an FTP client.

please try re-doing the CD with the ISO file and let me know how it goes. I think you'll have no problem as long as you look for the "burn CD from Image file" option.

peace
gary

10. Success
Using the disc with the .iso file and a dual CD computer, I successfully burned a properly functioning CD. I had been working on a single CD laptop which is partly why I tried to go in one step. Thanks for your help, Gary.

11. I'm not sure I have a CD writer or CD writing software
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 09:47 PM by sunshinekathy
How do I tell?

And if I have a CD player that is also a CD writer, but not the software, is there freeware I can download to write to CDs with?

Thanks. I haven't tried to write a CD in a long time so have completely forgotten how - but I have 3 computers so I'm sure that one of their CD players must be capable of writing CDs cause I have a whole bunch of blank CDs sitting around here too.

Thanks for the lesson in advance.

Gary, Thanks a lot for doing this. This is great.

Can I give them away as a gift to those who donate to our 501-c3 for the national election data archive? It might be a good promo.

Kathy
