Elections chief 'comfortable' with touch screens
By George Bennett

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Sunday, March 12, 2006

Concerns about paperless electronic voting helped Arthur Anderson win a campaign for Palm Beach County elections supervisor in 2004.

But now that he's in charge and preparing to oversee another round of municipal elections Tuesday, Anderson is a staunch defender of the county's touch screen voting machines.

"I have every confidence in the touch screens, and I have no reservations to vote on the touch screens... even without the paper trail," Anderson said last week.

4. More of a mixed bag from the article.
If the county stays with touch screens, Anderson said, he wants them outfitted with printers so each voter could verify a tangible ballot before casting it electronically.

"Although I personally feel quite comfortable with the machines at this point, I know that many in our community want to have that added comfort of having that paper trail," Anderson said.

Activist Harriet Lerman says Anderson has been "brainwashed" by staff he inherited from previous Supervisor Theresa LePore. Lerman lost a Democratic campaign for county commission in 2004 and is now a vocal critic of electronic voting as part of the Palm Beach Coalition for Election Reform.

Since then, some pro-paper activists have accused him of not pursuing the matter aggressively.

5. He also appears to be quite comfortable with his cluelessness.
Oh well, just one more little stone on the rocky road to victory.
