WI: County Rejects (HAVA) Grant for (Diebold) Voting Machines

Winnebago County rejects grant for voting machines

May 17, 2006

OSHKOSH — The Winnebago County Board narrowly rejected a proposal to accept $294,000 in grant funding for touch-screen voting machines based on concerns regarding the integrity of the system.

The board Tuesday fell two votes short of the necessary 26 votes required to accept the funding for the purchase of 49 Diebold touch-screen machines.

Supervisors Bill Wingren and Jef Hall came out strongly against the purchase of the Diebold machines based on issues including reported high failure rates and the potential that the machines could be hacked.

2. Good start guys
now look into Votepad systems or an open source system that can be truly evaluated in an independent fashion.

8. Geez, I am in the wrong bizzz
To sell 49 machines for $294,000..... that's like $6,000 for a $400 machine. That is some kinda profit margin. Shoot, I could buy hundreds of politicians with that kind of money.

10. One of the biggest scams
about the voting machines, but the one that is the least noticed is the "suggested military hammer price" they're sold for. We need to push back with the phrase "tax-payer funded" machines every time we see "HAVA funded" thrown around in the press. Bringing it down to wallet level wakes up people, especially the everyman who isn't a voter, but will raise a ruckus at his county council or BoE if the issue touches his wallet.
