Campaign seeks poll workers

League says ranks are dwindling

By AMY RINARD

Posted: Jan. 7, 2007

The League of Women Voters of Wisconsin is seeking computer-savvy teenagers and people of color in a recruiting campaign for poll workers needed to replace the dwindling corps of mostly older workers that have staffed polling places for decades.

As election laws, equipment and procedures have become more complex and more dependent on electronic machines, elections officials around the state have reported that more of their older, longtime poll workers are resigning.

The campaign, already under way in Dane County, targets teens as young as 16 to serve as poll workers because young people are less apt to be intimidated by computerized election equipment.

"Some of the older poll workers are hesitant to use the high-tech voting machines," Kaminski said.

1. Good fucking luck
I was a poll worker in CT. An Assistant Registrar of Voters, even. There is a good reason why only "old" people do the job...the hours are just absurd, and only a retiree can possibly do it. Here, you can't volunteer for a few hours or a part of the day. You must agree to show up at 5:15 am (to set up and help test/set up the machines) and can't leave until 8:00 pm or until the registrar releases you. If there is a recount or an issue, you could wind up there until midnight. It is a ridiculous system. Who the hell can do that except a retiree, and even they aren't the best choice, because what the hell 70 year old can stay awake and alert for that long? Hell, most 30 year olds can't. Oh, and we get about $120 for "volunteering." I guess if you're a kid at Mickey D's, $120 for one day is pretty good. But it is one of the longest days you'll ever spend.

2. Great Idea, Operation "secret vote count" this should be easy , get the
16 year olds to bust them, The Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3, crowd will be watching over Democracy.

We will give them a mission to get anyone who tries to manipulate the vote count. Who do you think will win? The Crooks or the Kids?

3. Election Day should be a national holiday

for that reason and more.

It's absurd and troubling that it isn't.

Edit: Recommended.

5. the damn things are heavy and clunky. very hard to move
around, set up, etc. why? there is no reason for them to be any bigger than a lap top. i think that drumming these older poll workers out is part of the plan. really, the damn things are like boulders. for no god damn reason.
