New Version of Holt Bill: A Giant Step Backwards

by Vickie Karp

New Version of Holt Bill: A Giant Step Backwards
Position Statement from Coalition for Visible Ballots

PROBLEM - REACTION - SOLUTION:

Problem: 80% of America voted on some type of electronic voting machine, or had their paper ballots counted on computerized scanners, in 2006. All types of computerized equipment have been proven to be not only vulnerable to hacking, but cannot be made secure against it.

Reaction: Americans are finally waking up to the fact that computerized voting is a multi-billion dollar scam, probably designed to steal elections, and neatly paid for with our tax dollars. We need election reform!

Solution: Bills such as Rush Holt's described below, designed to look and feel like the answer. Who wouldn't want a "Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail"? Problem is, you can add printers to touchscreen voting machines and still end up with plenty of fraud! Problem is, you can still vote on a paper ballot, and if it is counted on a scanner, the election can still be undetectably stolen.

1. Senator Introduces 'Disappointing' E-Vote Reform Bill
Edited on Wed Feb-14-07 09:25 PM by kster

By Michael Hickins

Florida Senator Bill Nelson, who last week called snafus during a recent election in his state "a mockery of democracy," has
a bill that would ban paperless voting.

Nelson, who represents the state that has come to symbolize election problems for its controversial handling of the 2000 presidential recount and a disputed congressional election in Sarasota in 2006, warned in a statement that, "if Congress doesn't get this done, I'm afraid our democracy could die from lack of legitimacy."

Nelson's bill is intended to shore up the nation's electronic voting system and restore voter confidence in the way all states record, tabulate and verify votes.

Specifically, Nelson's legislation would require all electronic voting systems, including direct record electronic (DRE) machines, to produce a checkable paper record.

6. Say what?
A "Mockery of Democracy"?

Good one, Sen. Nelson. The whole HAVA mess is indeed making a joke of our democracy. Too bad we can't just get rid of HAVA and start fresh, but there are way too many people sucking at the teat of the billions of dollars flowing out of HAVA.

Frankly, all congress can do is control federal elections - to one degree or another. And federal elections can very easily be hand counted. Easily.

So why even mess with all the rest of this mockery of democracy? To leave the door open for the crooks, that's why.

I say we slam the door shut on Diebold, et al, and barricade it by hand.

2. Direct Action: How to prove that Voting Machine ‘Paper Trails’ are worthless:

This is an excellent way to demonstrate one key vulnerability of the medium:

1) Go to a restaurant that prints out thermal receipts (I confess, I went to Mickey D’s).

2) Put the receipt in the sack along with your hot food.

3) Take it out and notice that it has been registered illegible in any place that heat has touched.

4) Scan and email it to your congresscritter, to Rush Holt, to Sen. Feinstein, and any state/local/national figures (media definitely included) that you think might need to know about it. Also, send it to your friends, so that they know the truth about this dirty little secret of the election industry.

We’ve been telling them for years and they won’t listen. Time to show them

7. List of cosponsors for the Holt bill
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR00811:@@@P

The page says this is the list, "followed by Cosponsors withdrawn," which there are apparently none. Yet. We can fix that, can't we???

I hate seeing names like Barbara Lee, Maxine Waters, Sheila Jackson-Lee on this list, for example. Let's get callin'!
