DNC: Bush Administration Should Support DC Voting Rights
The following release was issued today by the Democratic National Committee:

This week, a bill which would give the District of Columbia voting rights on the floor of the House of Representatives was passed out of the House Judiciary Committee and the Government Reform Committee. This legislation is the next step in the fight to give the District of Columbia full Congressional representation. The District of Columbia has over half a million tax paying residents who are the only Americans who lack a vote on how their taxes are spent. Democrats have garnered bipartisan support for this legislation and are working to advance this issue. During its winter meeting, the Democratic National Committee passed a resolution in support of full voting rights for DC. The Bush Administration, however, has refused to say whether the President will support a DC voting rights bill.

"Residents of the District of Columbia work hard every day, pay their taxes, serve in the military and are fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan like many other Americans," said Democratic National Committee Voting Rights Institute Chair Donna Brazile. "District residents deserve the same representation and voting rights as the rest of the country. The movement of this legislation is a great sign that the fight for DC voting rights is advancing under the Democratic Congress. I call on the Bush Administration and Republicans in Congress to support this long overdue legislation which will help remedy the District of Columbia's voting rights disparity."
