Vote counting strategy: announce that we'll randomly spot check 30 districts, don't say which ones
I don't know what the rules are for each state, but if a candidate, or voting rights group would announce that they WILL be spot checking in this election, it may discourage some of the more blatant attempts to steal the vote in '08.

Because it would be announced as a preventative measure, that would shut up all the people who would cry "conspiracy theorist" or "sour grapes". Let them know that win, lose, or draw, we WILL spot check the vote. I don't think anyone could really argue that this was too much to ask for without highlighting the ways in which the current process falls way short of being acceptable.

1. And if the results are off by more than a vote or two the whole state gets recounted.

2. Good approach!
You just have to make sure NOBODY in the county knows what those districts will be.

3. What you are referring to is called a RANDOM AUDIT
there needs to be a Random Audit on every election, not just the ones that the candidates want to audit. Some states have adopted audit laws, most recently New Jersey, but still most states have no audits.

you have the right idea. what you need to do is advocate for Mandatory Random Audits in your state.

the new election bill about to be introduced by Rush Holt will allow federal funds for states who do conduct a random audit this November. Call your SoS and tell them you want a random audit!

4. Thank you for giving me the correct course of action on this (and terminology)
I am going to do some more research, and I will definitely make sure to do what I can to get the word out about this (after I call our SoS). Thanks again!
