8. Now wait for the argument that they're all off my similar margins,
so the machines are just fine.

If my ATM was off by 10% I wouldn't use it. And how much do each of these Optiscans cost?

34. however
this shows a significant problem because even if they are all off by the same margin, only one of two things could be possible:

1) those missing votes went somewhere else so the totals still matched.

2) no one checked the vote totals against the check-in list on election night

21. It's good to see we have the process to recount.
Landshark was the first person I heard use the term chain of custody during the whole OHIO snafu.

....and Who's to say about chain of custody.

I think given the last 4 years for me and some here 8, we have learned much ...though some have become cynical while others scoff at the process, IMO we're all better off for it.

To a dem in the whitehouse come Nov.:toast:

22. That's why he's a genius.
He went to the fundaments of the right to vote, and before most anybody else was insisting that votes should be subject (at the least) to the same protections as dollars.

This all fulcrums against the argument that money is free speech, when it comes to voting. Because if that's true, votes are the gold standard.

What about 89%? Obama picked up 25 votes after the hand count in Ward #5. How many other wards across the state were off as much as 11%?

You're hopeless. You remind me of those dogmatic Huckabee supporters. You have much in common with them.

28. The point of a recount
The point of a recount is to make sure that all votes are counted. It is an exercise in honesty, accuracy, and protection of the franchise.

The delegate count is unlikley to change, thus the "winner" won't either. But the candidates are NOT the focus of our democratic process, however the media might try to make it so. The VOTERS are at the center, and should have their rightful place restored: in law, in practice, and in the minds of the nation.

33. How could this not have been caught on election night
The Diebold scanners show the vote totals on each machine. Each precinct should check the total number of votes vs. the voter roll (check-in list). If there is a significant discrepancy in number of voters, that should be noticed on election night.

the numbers look like everyone lost about 10% of their votes. That should have been caught on election night.

39. Did they not *have* the right pens, or simply not tell the voters they had to use them?
With the heavier than expected turnout, maybe people decided the type of ink wasn't so important after all?

42. Proper training includes what type of pen and why it is important
Most BOEs chop back on training when they're busy or short of funds. With a few hundred ballots in the same precinct having been marked with the wrong ink, it's almost a sure bet that training was inadequate.

will be in short supply in some Dem precincts come November. Just thinking back to the way voting machines were distributed in places like Ohio four years ago.

35. A tip of the hat to BlueDogDemocratNH for providing this info
The widest variations so far were in Manchester's Ward 5. Vote counters there mistakenly transposed write-in votes for vice president as votes for presidential candidate. As a result, all major candidates lost votes. Kucinich lost three in the ward and has a total of 20 votes there. Hillary Clinton lost 64 with a new total of 619; John Edwards lost 38 and has 217 votes; Barack Obama lost 39 and has 365, and Bill Richardson lost seven, leaving him 39.
