Cols Dispatch's Hit job on OH SOS Brunner: "Officials: Brunner Shaking Voter Trust"
ELECTION-SYSTEM TIFF
Officials: Brunner shaking voter trust
Sunday, January 27, 2008 3:36 AM
BY MARK NIQUETTE
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
One of the reasons Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner sought a comprehensive study of Ohio's voting equipment last fall was to address her top goal for the office: restoring trust in Ohio elections after the tumultuous 2004 election.

But some local elections officials are questioning whether she's doing the opposite instead, in the wake of controversy over her recommendations to address the problems found in the study.

"What she is indirectly doing is undermining the confidence of Ohio voters -- and I don't know why," said Barbara E. Martin, the Republican chairwoman of the Darke County Board of Elections.

"Changes at this late date into the '08 election cycle would further cause voter confusion, and I feel that would cause voters to question the accuracy of the entire voting process," Maggie Barth, a Democratic member of the Crawford County Board of Elections, wrote on a survey that Brunner conducted.

1. What Brunner is doing is taking away the chance for the local BOEs
to cheat and rig elections .... the repugs have been doing this for a long
time and the Dispatch is covering their asses. Plus a lot of "democrats" on
the BOEs are democrat in name only but work for the republicans .....
see Deleware County 2004 re-count.

Jennifer had the machines tested twice once by the machine makers and a second
test by academic institutions. They all failed.

The republicans are fighting to keep thier dirty secrets hidden and to keep power
too.

2. My response:
I was very disappointed with article "Officials: Brunner Shaking Voter Trust". Jennifer Brunner's responsibility as SOS should be to ensure elections are fair and verifiable and that voters are confident that their votes will count, not on whether current systems please Election Officials. The GAO Report on Electronic Voting :

http://www.gao.gov/highlights/d05956high.pdf

as well as Ohio's recent Everest Report reveal issues of serious concern about the reliability and accuracy of electronic voting. There are also serious security issues with these machines, yet these issues fail to be included in your article. I believe these problems should supersede the preferences of election officials. We live in a country willing to sacrifice our military lives for the exportation of democracy. Shouldn't those of us back home be vigilant that that democracy be available to voters in Ohio?

It would behoove your reader to have knowledge of these security and accuracy issues of electronic voting when learning of this "tiff". I hope, in the future, you will provide all information pertinent to this issue.

4. Old trick
make the story about Brunner ... not the machines that failed the tests.

8. author's response to me:
Thanks for writing. I understand your point, and we have written extensively about the results of EVEREST and other studies documenting vulnerabilities of DREs. This was a story prompted by the response from the election officials to the survey that Secretary Brunner solicited. You may not agree with their views, but they are pertinent to the discussion because many legislators say they are taking their cues from the officials

COULDN'T HE HAVE INCLUDED MENTION OF THESE VULNERABILITIES IN AN ARTICLE ON REPUBLICAN BOE OFFICIALS REBELLING?

5. Gee I wonder if I know anybody who might have been giving Brunner info?

BTW A lot of the "Democratic" members of the BOEs are not really dems but tools
of the republican party. In Delaware County, Ohio one of the biggest road blocks
to a re-count in 2004 were "democrats" on the BOE. And darned if right before
a 2006 analysis of the vote Delaware County put in an order for more 2004 ballots
from a company in Dayton, OH.

My fav all time "Democratic member BOE member" was Theresa LaPore (SP???)
of Florida .... Madam Butterfly Ballot .... turns out she had switched her party
so as to register as a dem and in the past had worked for Saudi arms dealer
Kashoggi

7. Troublemaker.

I knew NPR was in the toilet when they interviewed Theresa LaPore as a "voting systems expert". I screamed "butterfly ballot" at my radio.

6. Yep. I wasn't concerned about the election management system until Brunner ruined the party.
I was in bliss until she bit the apple.

:sarcasm:
