Low tech has its advantages

Opinion

03/02/11

With only a few races on the village election ballots, and with many of those few containing only the sole name of the sole candidate, some villages in Sullivan County have decided that it does not make sense to go to the expense of importing, exporting, programming and testing the electronic voting machines that made their debut last November.

Instead, village voters will mark paper ballots that will be counted by hand after the polls close.

The savings start with the $3,000 it would have cost to bring the machines in and take them away. Add to that the cost of printing and other technical considerations, and the choice of paper makes even more sense.

Other villages and towns should make note of the experience in the March 15 election and try to figure out the breaking point where the new electronic machines are more costly and more trouble than they are worth.
