Ohio recount by Cobb looking to raise $21,600 by Monday
Their attorneys have already delivered the bond for the $116,300 bond to secure our right to demand the recount. They have raised $228,401.19 of the $250,000 they needed to raise by Monday. As of about an hour or so ago, they were just $21,600 shy of their goal. They also need another 1,400 volunteers to go to Ohio.

Full details of how they anticipate spending the money are posted on the front page of their website at: http://www.votecobb.org. People can also donate online from there and designate that it's for the recount Ohio efforts.

Eloriel posted a list explaining the different groups who are collecting for recounts. I don't want to be in competition with anyone else's efforts and have already donated to Hedda's valiant and much appreciated efforts(!!!!)

However, I've decided to focus this weekend just on trying to help the Green Party raise the money they need by Monday.

Okay, here's the deal: I know everyone, including myself, is pretty much tapped out and wrung dry financially, but we can still email friends who may have some money left in their pockets and ask them to help, right? Even if each person who reads this gets just one person to donate $10.00, that money will help pay for meals and travel for volunteers to go to Ohio and be on the ground to fight for us (if we can't go).

Thanks for your help!

I wish I could get away from work and go, but I've already taken off all I can -- took time off week of Nov 2.

And the count is more meaningful to me now, if that's possible, after reading the report from the hearings in Ohio. I feel utter disbelief that this could have happened:

"Hearings on Ohio Voting Put 2004 Election in Doubt ,     By Bob Fitrakis & Harvey asserman, FreePress.org, Thursday 18 November 2004

Highly-charged, jam-packed hearings held here in Columbus have cast serious doubt on the true outcome of the presidential election.

On Saturday, November 13, the Ohio Election Protection Coalition’s public hearings in Columbus solicited extensive sworn first-person testimony from 32 of Ohio voters, precinct judges, poll workers, legal observers, party challengers. An additional 66 people provided written affidavits of election irregularities. The unavoidable conclusion is that this year's election in Ohio was deeply flawed, that thousands of Ohioans were denied their right to vote, and that the ultimate vote count is very much in doubt.

Most importantly, the testimony has revealed a widespread and concerted effort on the part of Republican Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell to deny primarily African-American and young voters the right to cast their ballots within a reasonable time. By depriving precincts of adequate numbers of functioning voting machines, Blackwell created waits of three to eleven hours, driving tens of thousands of likely Democratic voters away from the polls and very likely affecting the outcome of the Ohio vote count, which in turn decided the national election.

...but, originally, the bill for the recount was supposed to be $110,000, and they wanted to raise $150,000 to cover all other contingencies. They got their $150,000. Now, they need $250,000???

:wtf:

I'm beginning to wonder what's going to happen next. If they get the $250,000 by Monday, is the next thing we're going to hear the news that they're almost ready to demand the recount, but now need another million, and have to have it by a week from now?

We gave them what they originally asked for. Where's our recount? How much is it really going to cost? And how long is it going to take? (Remember, they've got to get it done by December 12, when the Electoral College "safe harbor" time-frame runs out, or it isn't going to make a bit of difference what the result of the recount is -- it will be too late to change the electors.)

:-(

C'mon, Greens. We gave you the $150,000. Get our recount on!

15. Most if not all the original money went to the state --
in most states that even allow recounts other than those triggered automatically, the parties asking for a recount have to pay for it -- pay the state.

THIS money is to help pay for the attorneys, photocopies, training and organizing volunteers, etc., etc., etc.

It's money well-spent IF you believe the recount is important -- hell, and even if you don't -- trust me, the recount IS important.

And if you're not convinced, wander through these two threads (esp. Ohio), reading all the links, and come back and tell me it's not important.
