2. California
They've barely begun to count Los Angeles and San Francisco. That margin will shrink.

21. California's 55 electoral votes
are disproportional in comparison with those of other states.

First, subtracting the two votes corresponding to the two senators (which are not representative of population), California's 53 remaining electoral votes make it 53 times as important to the popular vote as North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana; over 18 times more than Utah and Nebraska; and roughly 7 times as important as Arizona, Colorado, and Alabama.

Second, each electoral vote in California represents a population of over 600,000 persons, whereas the electoral votes in Wyoming represent only about 200,000 persons.

Further, the overall electoral vote count is going to be very close in any case. Regardless of who wins the electoral vote in those various states, the popular vote is negligible in comparison to California's, most importantly because of the margin of victory there.

I think the popular vote is going to be much closer than it appears at the moment, and Bush's glorious Electoral College victory is once again going to be tarnished by a defeat in the popular vote. Do you think the citizens of the United States are going to stand for that same undemocratic result for the second time in two elections (with the benefit going to the same candidate twice)? I wouldn't bet on it.

The great thing about a democracy is that the People can demand that their will be abided.

3. I'm not surprised...just disappointed
We knew Kerry was a very hard sell. And we also knew that the nation was dosed with fear for four years.

Lesson: go with the populist rabble-rouser next time, not the dull, scholarly fellow. In fact, dull scholarly types should simply stay the fuck away from our national tickets; this is a Wal-Mart nation, raised by TVs.

17. I'm with ya.
Canada's looking real good right now. What the folks on the right don't understand is that those of us on the left have been on the defensive for 24 years ... since Ronald Reagan. Ross Perot gave us Clinton for 8 years, but he was able to accomplish little that those of us on the left wanted. Like a good conservative, he managed to balance the budget. Other than that, he was crucified for 6 of the 8 years he was President, and he accomplished no significant liberal objectives. Instead, we played defense, and no more. Personally, I no longer feel that I'm a part of this great nation. I have no desire to continue to participate in its demise and destruction.

I sang this song from "Schoolhouse Rock" to my children today ...

In 1787, I'm told, our founding fathers did agree,
to make a list of principles for keepin' people free,
the USA was just startin' out, a whole brand new country,
and so the people spelled it out, they wanted a land of liberty ...

We, the people, in order to form a more perfect union,
establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare,
and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,
do ordain and establish this Constitution
for the United States of America.

How hollow those words sound to me now ...

:(

19. Calm down. Do you need a bucket of cold water thrown on you?
That's just what this country needs; voters to leave the country. So what? You say you can still vote as an absentee. Big deal. What about the work that needs to be done for the next election? That's right. You plan to be in Canada so the rest of us get to take up the slack.

Sorry to say it to you, but you need to wake up and smell the coffee. Elections are won more by hard work than by the simple act of punching a ballot.

Every damned vote counts and every workers multiplies his/her vote with the work he/she does.

Wimp out. Run to Canada. Laugh at the rest of us working our asses off during the next election.

End of rant.

30. If we lose this one ...

If we lose this one our elections will resemble the one's in the Soviet Union. Balloting will be controlled by Republicans armed with electronic voting machines they can manipulate at will to produce ANY result they desire!!!!

No, we win this election or we go the way of Nazi Germany!!! What Prescott couldn't achieve, his grandson WILL!!!!

39. I don't wan't to go down with the ship
Listen, in my work, politics and personal life, doing what is right to help people is very much a part of who I am. But, I have to think of how I can be a part of a progressive society.
Look around you. Local politics are heading to the right. Fundamentalists are on the rise. Corporations are becoming even more powerful. We know that the republicans handily control the house and the senate. The Supreme Court leans right and its Chief Justice is likely to step down very soon. With * in a second term, this country is bona fide right wing.
This flowery language of the network anchors saying that we need to come together - WHAT MAKES US THINK THAT * will have any motivation to appease anyone to his left?
I liken all of this to the beginning of the ship starting to take on water. As much as my heart wants to stay and fight, I don't have it in me anymore.
I am 38 years old and I have voted in every election since I turned 18. I've seen my party try to market itself to the American people. And, the Wal-Mart Nation hasn't been a very loyal customer to the Dems. I am burned out from seeing this!
Vancouver, BC is 125 miles north of my hometown. I have a skill that Canada wants. I'd make less money, but my quality of life would be better.
Call me a quitter, if you want. I hope to God I wake up tomorrow to learn that Kerry has won. But if not, I gotta do what I gotta do.

9. Where did all the votes go?
There were more votes than this in 2000! Yet there were no lines like there today and through the early voting. It was projected that there might be as many as 120 million votes in this election. Where are those 15-25 million votes? Hmmmm...

....at least half the people in this country LIKE the Boy Chimp, like being lied to by the administration, like having their civil liberties stripped, like being funneled through a tube into wars and national debt beyond anything they've ever seen, or imagined.

Ain't that great?

Best part is, it's the guy next door, or the person who drives your child's bus, or teaches them at school.

It's at LEAST half of this country.

Fuck.

16. The nation has gone mad
Viewing black and white news reels of Nazi Germany as Hitler came to power, I was always struck by the dogged adherence by his followers to what, we now know in retrospect, to be the most evil regime in modern history. I have always wondered how people of moral stature, education and conscience felt as their fellow countrymen followed a madman. I now know how they felt, the future is dark.

33. Popular Vote, and Homework, please PLEASE read....
I'm too exhausted (in every way measurable) to do this myself, so here's homework for everyone.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0876793.html

That page lists the votes counted for every state in 2000. Everyone agrees, record turn out this election...yet none of the state totals I've looked at seem to reflect the higher turn out. So....what has everyone been waiting in line for?

We're at 89% of precincts nation wide counted so far. And we're at a popular vote tally of 104.4 million, according to CNN. So, in 11% of precincts, we're going to count another 16 million votes (for an estimated 120 million voters total)? So...if there are 16 million votes left to be counted....where are they coming from? The west coast...and...Florida and Ohio? Maybe Iowa and N.M. too?

For a quick number, last time we had 594 thousand voters in N.M. This year, we have 525 thousand counted, and 96% reporting. WHAT THE FUCK?

40. THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE WE DIDN'T GET THE TRUTH ABOUT 9/11 TO ENOUGH PEOPLE!
There was always one and only one way to end the Bush Regime: GET OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT THEY DID ON 9/11/2001. With the truth out, they would be thrown out by a landslide. WITHOUT THE TERRIBLE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT THE BUSH REGIME REALLY DID ON 9/11/2001, FASCISM IN THIS COUNTRY IS INEVITABLE. Democrats who are to squeamish to face or publicize this terrible truth, simply and finally surrender to Fascism just like German Social Democrats who didn't dare to demand the truth about what the Nazi's did with the Reichstag Fire.

When not enough Democrats were strong enough to face the terrible truth, they gave up the popular vote by a large margin, and it was never anything but self-delusion to think anything else was possible.

42. Popular Vote totals -
Official vote total for Bush and Gore for 2000 as of 12/2001: 105,405,100

Most recent total for Bush and Kerry as of this writing: 109,320,999. That is just under 4 million more than in 2000 -- spread across 50 states and thousands of precincts. Didn't Rove say that he wanted to register the 4 million evangelicals who didn't vote in 2000?
