1. Looks like it's been hacked.
I looked up the contacts for both DFA and the carrier (Verio) on Whois and send them e-mails to let them know. They may already have gotten e-mail about it, but just in case nobody else knew how to do that ... thought I'd do it.

2. Is this some sort of cyber crime?
Is there a jurisdiction?

3. The jurisdiction is the US
Hacking is covered under law Title 18: Crimes and Criminal Procedure: Part 1: Crimes: Chapter 47: Fraud and False Statements: Section 1030: Fraud and related activity in connection with computers.

The federal punishment for hacking into computers ranges from a fine or imprisonment for no more than one year to a fine and imprisonment for no more than twenty years. This wide range of punishment depends upon the seriousness of the criminal activity and what damage the hacker has done.

10. My guess is, if it is RNC operatives ...
they've set somebody else up to take a fall, it wasn't done by the people who claimed they did it. Just my usual paranoia, I guess, but I'm guessing if it was Republicans, they probably will misdirect any potential law enforcement investigation by claiming to be somebody other than the one(s) who did this.

Maybe it's too paranoid -- IP addresses for incoming access aren't hard to log, the server that carries the DFA site probably can make a fair guess as to the IP address of the person/people who did it.

Remains to be seen what happens -- I don't doubt somebody can figure it out using server logs. Maybe it is just idiot kids proving they can do it, I don't know. Something makes me doubt it, somehow ...

11. If they were sophisticated enough to hack the site
most likely they got the logs too

12. Maybe so,
or made sure they used a computer on a dynamic IP, at least. Of course, anybody on a Time Warner broadband connection most likely has a dynamic IP, and I'd assume anybody else using any other cablemodem.

Guessing nobody's ever really going to know who did it.

4. gosh isn't it fantastic what nice people are out there,, that they have
so much time and that rare combination of artistic and technical skill, not to mention a love and respect for humanity. I really can't imagine a more useful outlet for their energies, it warms the heart doesn't it?

5. Pretty sad when RNC operatives do this kind of stuff.
Looks like a scary case of projection if you ask me. The fascists really do hate any opposition, don't they? Isn't this how Hitler came to power?

13. In case anybody's interested ...
they did e-mail me to let me know they were on the case. Glad to know they're paying attention over there, and nice enough to respond.
