11. Mentioned that word, "fraud" used for first time today in OH.
Glibs filed for recounts in NV and NM. "Fraud" term used by Jesse J.

"We want everybody to vote, and their vote to count. We can live with losing, we can't live with fraud." (Jesse Jackson)

Jackson says Kerry supports investigation. Kerry spokesman says no evidence of fraud found.

Republican news release says Dems recount a waste of money.

13. some quotes
KB: "Kerry conceeded so he has no standing to ask for a recount..."

KB: "Other two gentlemen (candidates) have a right to ask for recount, but they together only received .25% of vote"

KB looks awfully nervous if you ask me...

40. I thought that was a real interesting point --
"Kerry conceeded so he has no standing to ask for a recount..."

Kinda like he was trying to get the legal (not to mention court of public opinion) argument right out there, ahead of everyone. Just in case.

It is not a legally binding statement. Any losing candidate can request a recount.

53. Well, there have been lots of people here (and elsewhere?)
who kept insisting that a concession speech is not legally binding, but I don't happen to personally know for sure (or care, really -- Kerry's been so AWOL on this issue I don't think he'd deserve the Presidency if he got it).

UPDATE & Action November 18, 2004

USAction.org | Take Action | Give to USAction

USAction

Dear Friend,

Now that we've had the chance to catch our breath from the amazing work around the Election, USAction is hard at work, creating our agenda for the coming year.

Over the past year, our partner organization, USAction Education Fund , had one principal goal: to hold America to her promise of democracy for all Americans. The non-partisan effort was driven by the historical disenfranchisement and under-representation of specific groups of voters—primarily people of color and single women.

The extraordinary turnout on November 2nd was no accident. It was the result of months of hard work by dozens of groups, coming together to help make democracy work for everyone. Working collaboratively with state partners and with groups like National Voice and Women’s Voices, Women’s Votes, USAEF helped to make history, registering 550,000 new voters and working to turnout 1.2 million single women, gay men and lesbians, African Americans, Native Americans and Latinos.

We are encouraged by the turnout, but are also reminded that the journey is still long. When it’s easier to pay parking tickets than it is to vote, we know there is much work to be done.

USAction is creating a historical document about the non-partisan work accomplished by progressive activists leading up to November 2nd. We need to hear from you! Please tell us your story—did you volunteer? Was it easy for people at your polling site to vote? What was the condition of the polling sites you saw? Were there long lines? Did you register someone to vote, or give a first time voter a ride to the poll? Did you encourage a friend to get active in our democracy? Stories make the movement and we want to hear yours!

In the coming months, expect to see several “calls to action” from us. You are our frontline and we need your participation to succeed.

Already, USAction has put in motion an “aggressive, progressive” agenda. Our state affiliates are planning actions to hold members of Congress accountable on issues of healthcare, tax policy and civil rights. We are scheduling candlelight vigils, letters-to-the editor writing campaigns, and sending “welcome packages” to newly elected officials so they know where our activists stand on important consumer issues. To get involved in any or all of these campaigns sign up to volunteer with one of our state partners.

So, thank you again as we forge ahead in what promises to be challenging times. We will be in touch to ask for your help and to keep you updated on our progress.

In Solidarity,

Jeff Blum, Executive Director
USAction

18. Blackwell calls Jackson a provocateur.
KO asks about whether Blackwell is obstructionist. Blackwell complaining about cost. Talking about how few votes the glibs got. Says Kerry has no standing, as he didn't request recount. KO catches him on how cost is established by OH law.

Blackwell going on about Jesse J's complaints about unfairness. Example: in Franklin county head of Dem party told Jesse Jackson to be quiet. KB saying JJ is trying to stir hornets nest.

KO: your office not taking steps to prevent recount? KB: no, our law allows it. Will regard is as yet another audit of the voting process. We have an extensive audit process, where we audit several precincts, and that's why it takes so long. 70% of voters use punchcard system, which I opposed, but legislature didn't change. We have most scrutinized election system in US.

KO: asking about appearance of conflict of interest because KB is also head of Republican party. KB is describing similar situation with dems as chairs of election boards.

KO: can you refute or confirm the internet story that you had meeting with Pres. Bush on election day. KB: thats absurd. Result of too many people with too much time on their hands.

Over now. Some of this is very much paraphrased. Hope it helps.

Keith asked, what I thought were, three good questions:

_1. "willing to say that your office will not fight the recount request"

_2. "met with * on election day"

_3. "response to Rev J's statement about team owner & umpire"

SOS KB kocked down the first with "right to request but it will cost us money", denied 2nd,
and gave a run around on the 3rd criticizing Rev JJ.

36. Where were the hard questions?
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 09:05 PM by GreatAuntK
I would have expected KO to have a list of abuses to ask him about. If he had a list of the issues somewhere on the table, perhaps he threw them up in the air before the commercial, because he didn't go into them. I mean, particular things, like shortage of machines, people waiting in line for 8-10 hours, screens registering Bush when they punched Kerry etc. The devil is in the details, and he did not go there. He just let Blackwell have the stage. You can't say Blackwell didn't have a chance to put forward his case, he did, and now... what?

Blackwell even threatened to have the legislature pass a new ruling on the cost of recounts - but not likely that could happen so quickly, could it?

When Blackwell was whining that the candidates had so few votes that it wouldn't change anything for them, and yet they're asking for a recount, the obvious response, I would have thought ... When there are obvious irregularities, and there are - isn't a fair election, with all of the votes counted, reason enough for a recount.

42. KO challenged him about the appearance of impropriety re: wearing two hats
both as SoS, and as chair of the state Repub party. Also, pointed out that Blackwell's whining about the costs was disingenuous, as the costs were established by OH law.

I do wish he perhaps had been a bit harder on him, but considering the situation with his close friend, Dick Ebersol, I'm personally willing to let KO slide.

47. I felt the same thing, Blackwell got ro run off at the mouth
Blackwell got to run off at the mouth and not answer the questions, typical behavior for Repugs - I thought he mostly bashed Jackson. Apparently, they also coached Katherine Blackwell to say the same thing over and over. Like if you say it enough times, it's true...NOT! I am a big fan of K. Olbermann but he was way to quiet. The questions he asked were good, Blackwell didn't answer them, but Keith could have asked more.

33. My notes on what was said
KO said Jesse used the term "fraud" openly in Ohio for the first time today. Jesse quoted as saying, "I suppose the more info Kerry gets, the more you will hear from him".

KB calling Jesse a "publicity hound", complaining about cost of recount to state (cost to Glibs is $120K, the price in 1956). Says they're abiding by the law. Votes are counted at local level.
Franklin county head of BOE is African-American and head of Dems for that county and that he would not let voters be disenfranchised, told Jesse to stop. KB says Jesse is trying to stir up a hornet's nest, that "Elvis is dead"

KO asked if KB taking any steps to prevent recount.
KO told 2 candidates once we certify on 12/6, they have 5 days to ask for recount, once they ask we will provide it. It's taken this long to certify because we audit by precinct across state, to be sure every vote counted. 70% use punchcard machine I tried to change, bi-partisan activity stopped that. We have met every test, I'm very proud, delivered free & fair election

KO asked about conflict of interest
KB says Ohio is bi-partisan, very transparent, Montgomery County BOE head is dem chairmen.

KO asked if KB met w/ Bush on election day.
KB: hogwash, absolutely zero, not true

What the hell was that about? Elvis? Give Keith a break he had to break the news of close friends son being found. Then read that dental records would be used to identify the body. That is very Hard. I would have liked a question about machine distribution but all Kathrine Blackwell could say is nothing to see here everything was perfect.

I would Like to see Keith give JJ equal time, especially after being called a publicity hound. How hard has Kathrine Blackwell fought for voting rights? 13 cent per Ohioan to double check the vote is nothing compared to shrub raising the birth tax.

I don't think he would be on tv, not to mention terra alerts, if they weren't concerned.

43. My thoughts
It is interesting to note that, today, a new video was released today showing Osama bin Laden's right-hand man Ayman al-Zawahiri talking about vowing to ‘continuing fighting U.S.” (reference: CNN). Even more interesting, this video was recorded before Nov. 2, 2004.

I guess there must me a mess of cards in the idiot’s (my personal name for *) hand – they play them when they need to divert attention.

Yes, I am new. So glad that DU exists. It helps me cope with our democracy going down the tubes. But, I truly believe that we will prevail – we have to continue to fight. There will be many battles.

I saw the ‘Blackwell’ piece – the *’s must be nervous. They are putting up many diversions.

First post – go easy on me. Please feel free to redirect this if needed.

You've brought up a good point; one that DUers constantly bring up! When things go bad for *, invariably there is either a new video or a raised terror alert.

No need to re-direct; I think you hit that nail on the head. And welcome to DU!

55. Welcome, SnoopDog!
Thank you for your thoughts. I didn't know about the "new" AlQaeda video.

We only attack those who sound freeperish, who move like trolls in the night. You are obviously a person with class and intelligence.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

66. Thanks, everyone, for the welcome.
This will be my last post on this thread (as to not ‘kick’ it up unwarranted). Just want to say thanks to my greeters and for the tips. I have been reading DU since 11/02 and have picked up on the basics. Everyone is very passionate about our desire for democracy, and so am I.

Woof-woof.

64. Hey Snoop Dog.
Word of advice... DU (as a newbie) is a rough sea. But, I find it is easy to navigate if when (and it WILL happen) someone rides your butt, you sit back and ask two questions:

1. Is this person trying to tell me how to think? (if so, blow them off)

2. Is this person trying to talk WITH me.. illustrate something I may have overlooked? (if so, engage them, I have learned a lot here, and it isn't by engaging the people in question no. 1, above).

I am loving snoop dog these days!

52. I wish he had asked Blackwell about the homeland security lock down
during the vote count. I really wanted to see him dance around that.

63. The email I sent to KO about this. Please read.
Watching the Ohio Secretary of State on your show, it became clear to me how the recount will be done. See what you think:

Badnarik asks for a recount and gets it. Similarly, Cobb asks for and gets a recount. THEIR votes are recounted, since they are paying for it. But nobody recounts either Kerry’s or Bush’s votes, since they did not ask for (and pay for) a recount. The results don’t change, and Rove & Co. laugh for four more years.

Do you think it’s possible? I hope everyone is ready for this creative interpretation of the recount law.

Love what you’re doing. Keep it up.

Am I nuts, or could it happen this way?

68. Sorry
But You asked me to phrase it this way...You're Nuts... Any Presidential recount automatically retallies the votes for ALL candidates. That is just simply how it works.

Also, not to be nit-picky but I don't think fraud is KO's priority right now. The accident of his mentor is probably forefront don't ya think? Maybe you should've started off by saying our prayers are with Ebersol etc..

72. You can sign up with the Ohio Dems and certify the vote
for yourself. (Assuming, of course, you have the luxury of time off and money to travel to Ohio.)

Here's their blog that states it: http://www.ohiodems.org/index.php?display=ViewBlogThread&id=201965

It doesn't advertise on their front page that they're looking for counting volunteers, but they are.

(snip)

"Volunteers can sign up at the Ohio Democratic Party website: www.ohiodems.org and the party will also accept contributions to help offset the cost of completing a recount."

70. I hate Ken Blackwell
I agree with all of your posts about his interview and just wanted to add that it seemed like KB ended the interview, not KO. I have never seen the interviewee end the interview before. It was strange. And what was up with the Elvis is Dead comment?!
