Just finished Cormac McCarthy's "The Road."
It was one of the better books I have read in awhile. Very powerful, very moving.

What McCarthy title do you all suggest I read next? I couldn't decide from the book descriptions in the back of "The Road" -- they all looked good!

1. I had trouble getting into "all the pretty horses"
as a book on tape - it might be better reading it. I haven't read any of the others.

3. Okay, but don't ruin it.
I'm going to be starting it here in a couple of days.

6. You might as well read No Country for Old Men next
Especially if you have any plans to see the film.

After that, you should read Blood Meridian, one of the finest pieces of American fiction in decades. Horribly violent in many places, it is an uncompromising and beautifully executed work.

Then try Suttree, an excellent story of character and characters. Funny in places and terribly sad in others.

The Border Trilogy is worth checking out, if you have the time and inclination.

10. I just started it last night
and am already on page 105. And I'm a slow reader.

It is really powerful. There's very little dialogue between the father and son, yet the bond and complete devotion between them is just extremely powerful and moving. I am really enjoying this book. I can't put it down.

12. It's a remarkable book
The consensus here on DU has been, well, not really a consensus! Some people absolutely hate and decry the book, while others love it. I number myself among the second group, and I'm glad to hear that you likewise enjoyed it.

And welcome to DU!

13. Thank you very much for the welcome.
My eyes were actually welling at the end. I think it was such an amazing story of unflinching love and commitment between father and son. I know I just finished it so I'm a bit partial at the moment, but I seriously believe it's one of my favorite books of all time.

I woke up and re-read the last chapter again, trying to really grasp exactly what McCarthy was trying to convey. I've got that book on the brain at the moment and it's all I can think about. :)
