So who wants to actually do the work to form a book club again? We did it once....

back in the day. We read and discussed Atwater's "The Handmaid's Tale", Toole's "Confederacy of Dunces", and Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath". One DUer would sponser each month's book. That person would open discussion at a pre-decided time with a few general questions about the book. The discussions lasted several days but this was early DU. Now I could see them lasting much longer.

So if you are interested in a monthly book club let us know. I'll be willing to lead the discussiuon on the first couple of books if no one else is interested. I'll make a poll of the top nominees and we'll vote for something we'd all like to talk about.

It can be fun if enough people participate. I nominated a couple of old books by Shirley Jackson ("Haunting of Hill House" and "We have always lived in a castle") but I'd much prefer your ideas.

Also, I have a suggestion for a book but it might take awhile for everyone to get the book. A professor I used to work with did a book on political films. It was quite fascinating. He was very enthused about the subject and might even come to our thread if enough people were participating.

The idea would be to read the book and see some of the films. The films should be fairly available due to companies like Netflix and the like.

I won't let it die if there's any real interest

when we come back from a 3 month tour of Baja. WOn't have regular enough internet access to do any organizing - but plenty of time for reading.

To be honest - with all that's going on, I'm politicked out and would prefer we read something non political - as good as it may be.

I'm currently finishing Ken Follett's Pillars of th Earth and it's fabulous historical fiction. Greg Ile has also captured my interest recently and I haven't read a dud by him yet. Or do we want to go more with a 'classic'?

Just promise me there'll be no 'romance novels' and I'm in for whatever. Shall we do one a month or?

That might be a really good book to start with. I haven't read it but it sound exceptional.

I'd also like to recommend, "The Emperor's Children", and "The Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison.

It depends on how much time I get for reading outside of work this spring.

And I can help you organize. My suggestion list could go on forever. So I'll wait and chime in if you don't get plenty! :>)

I was living in LA at the time, which made it more interesting to me since I could identify his town!
