Just finished PIECE OF MY HEART, an Inspector Banks mystery by Peter Robinson.
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 10:15 AM by raccoon

"Detective Inspector Alan Banks investigates the apparently motiveless murder of Nicholas Barber, a rock journalist from London visiting a small town near Banks's Yorkshire police precinct... Meanwhile, another mystery unfolds in a parallel narrative, the fatal stabbing of a young woman at a local rock festival back in 1969. Needless to say, the cases are intertwined—as Banks puts it, "the past is never over"—and part of the pleasure is trying to piece together the links…"

2. well it's a series, as you know
i've only read one of these, it was "close to home," one of the threads in this mystery involves the son of a dead rock star -- now the son, an aspiring musician, has disappeared and it could be suicide, could be murder, there in lies the tale

probably my favorite book on the theme of the rock star is "armageddon rag" by george martin, nice progressive anti-war touches also -- this one not a mystery but rather in the SF/fantasy genre and VERY well done

3. Love Robinson.
One of my favorite writers, at least his Alan Banks series. I've read one (or two?) non-Banks, but really prefer the series. Reading them in order is helpful, mostly to follow the changes in Banks' life: married, divorced, relationships. Just saw that there's a new one out, have to start haunting the used bookstores.

4. Me, too!
I've read the whole Alan Banks series and highly recommend it if anyone like police procedurals. Love Alan! He is a thinking-man's detective. I am presently in the middle of the new one, "Friend of the Devil". I would recommend reading them in order if possible, but if not, then read the earliest you can find first.
