I know this book just had to be banned back then: Clock Without Hands
by Carson McCullers, 1953. What?!! The F word is in it plenty of times. One boy has feelings for another boy. Black on white hanky panky that produces a baby. The KKK bombing a house 'cause a black guy moved into a white (trash) neighborhood. Wow.

1. I'll have to check it out. I'm on a Flannery O'Connor kick now, so McCullers can't be far behind.
The first thing I thought when I read your post, though, was that someone would have had to read it for it to be banned.

2. Heh, most likely.
Her most famous book, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter was made into a movie back in 1967 or so. At that time the book was republished. I had no idea it was published years before. I tried to check the book out of the library when I was around 13 but was forbidden to since "it's only for adults". So in high school I finally read it. She was a friend of Truman Capote but they had a falling out later on.

4. Recommended!
I like everything by Carson McCullers. My favourite is 'Member of the Wedding'.

5. Picked Up the Book After The Comments
I know I read this author years ago, but was glad you reintroduced me. Definitely will read more of him now. I guess the true meaning of a good book is one that transcends time. I'm always pleased to reread a book and find I like it even more.
