Stephen King e-book 'Mile 81' coming Sept. 1

NEW YORK — Stephen King is back in the e-book game.

The horror master is releasing a short story in digital format only. Scribner announced today that "Mile 81," a "chilling story" set at a rest stop on the Maine Turnpike, will go on sale Sept. 1 at a suggested price of $2.99.

The new book will also include an excerpt from King's upcoming novel, "11/22/63." Klout, a San Francisco-based website that helps measure online influence, will allow some users to download "Mile 81" for free.

Not related to the book but Stephen owns a radio station and he just announced they'll be starting a liberal radio talk show in September.

3. As someone who does not have an e-reader

and has no plans to get one, it is beyond annoying that things like this are being published only in an electronic format. This will NOT persuade me to cough up a couple of hundred dollars for an e-reader. Fortunately, there are still millions of paper and ink books still available (including several hundred in my own house still yet to be read).

4. Free kindle...

If you're reading this on a PC (or probably on a mac), you can download the free application "kindle for pc" from amazon, and then read any of the books available on kindle. (That's actually how I got so hooked that I ended up buying one.)

It's a great way to go through all the free books (which consist of nearly all of the classics that are out of copyright).

Anyway, don't rush right out and buy a reader just for Mile 81... it was barely worth the 0.99 or whatever I paid for it.

(Edited so I don't sound like ALL of the books on kindle for pc are free.) :)
