reading the Poisonwood Bible by Kingsolver

halfway thru it, expect to finish it by the weekend. Very good book, not my usual type but the wife and my father both recommended it and it's been worth it. If anyone has read it did you hate the father immediately? I understand the being called to your work and the devotion but man alive, you already know he's going to get one of his daughters killed.

anyway, I recommend it even though I haven't finished it yet

2. wow.

it was a great read, I stayed up late last night finishing it off. The way the sisters all turned out so differently especially the two that stayed on the continent was interesting to watch. Great book to look at when studying american foreign policy. Got to wonder have we learned anything or changed since then?

9. I love how Kingsolver so convincingly changed her "voice"

with each character. So subtle, yet so effective.

She is very talented.

like many religious fanatics I have known--convinced of the righteousness of his cause I loved the book but then I love all things Kingsolver

but i could never read it in a weekend. then again, i can't read most books in a weekend, but this is saddening stuff. i was reminded of it today when i saw a peice in the new york times magazine about missionaries in Africa. It makes me wonder why we can continue, as a christian society, to keep expecting to be able to manipulate other cultures with a few choice words and a bucket of water.

5. its all about saving souls

apparently there is some passage in the bible that says we are supposed to go out and bring people to christ. I got no problem talking to people about god and trying to get them on board but still have got to respect other cultures

7. Don't miss "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver

if you liked Kingsolver.

I fell in love with that book, much more so than any others of hers I've read. "Prodigal Summer" is truly wonderful.
