Dark Ages America: The Final Phase of Empire

New book out

Anyone read this, or any of Berman's other works? I'm especially curious because he was my editorial supervisor several years ago for a very short time (he was rocking the boat too much about changing the modus operandi and was forced out).

1. I just got it last night from my son. He said it was awesome. He brought

me "Misquoting Jesus", "Dark Ages America", and Mark Crispin Miller's "Fooled Again".

2. Those other two

Are highly recommended as well. I'm reading the predecessor by the author of "Misquoting Jesus" -- "Lost Christianities." It's quite interesting, even though I'm only about 30 pages in. And we have a copy of "Fooled Again" signed by Miller at a book reading here in DC. I really need to read it but am dreading it. We also have a recording of his appearance on BookTV that I much watch.

3. Started last night

So far, so good. Hopefully, he'll keep it up throughout. The introduction briefly runs over work, media, community and children and how they've changed for the worse. Afterwards he delves deeper.

6. I finished Dark Ages America on Saturday. Great book. From the

beginning he said things I've been trying to communicate to friends and family for the last 5 years. That America is becoming 'empty'. No one cares about anything outside of their tiny bubble. That we grow constantly more ignorant of history, fact, and the world around us. That our economic and 'foreign' policy is linked and then chained to the military. Americans truly believe the world exists just for them. We care so little about the millions we have killed.

It was depressing, but clearly written. I have dozens of little bookmarks stuck between the pages. He just served to make my resolve to leave the USA greater.

7. Finished it.

Like Chalmer Johnson's "The Sorrow of Empires", it's not optimistic. There are a lot deep rooted problems with society, like the consumerist mentality and disintegration of community. Politically, the momentum started with the ReagaNazi era isn't going to turn around. He says even if Kerry made it into the White House, he would only have slowed the train wreck down a bit.

I'd recommend reading it.

8. I just couldn't finish "The Sorrow of Empires". Got about half the way

through and was so troubled I stopped.

9. I've requested it from the library

Of course, knowing DC Public, it'll probably be a couple months before their staffers can be bothered to pull it off the shelves, or it'll be lost but wasn't marked as such in the catalog. :eyes:
