Catfish and Mandala--a truly great book!

It is almost impossible to categorize this book--a memoir, travel writing, a study in development of identity in a trans-cultural setting, an exploration of family dysfunction--this book encompasses all of those areas and more in an extraordinarily well-written package.

Andrew Pham was a boat refugee who came with his family to the United States shortly after the fall of Saigon, eventually settling in California, the great mosaic that is home to surges of new Americans.

He returns to Vietnam to ride his bicycle through the land ravaged by wars and beginning to taste change. Nothing is the same, yet everything is the same.
