I thought this book was EXCELLENT!
Dean describes the freeper mindset in a scholarly way, and it's juicy.

they are anti-science, anti-peace, anti-harmony and anti-life.

4. I read it.
Personally, I was more interested in the underlying research by Robert Altmeyer. I was exposed to the old Adorno et al. authoritarianism work back in the Old Stone Age wen I was in grad school and hadn't particularly kept up with more recent work, so Dean forced me to update myself. Let me recommend the basic Altmeyer reference:

5. I Also Recommend Conservatives Without Conscience
I also recommend Conservatives Without Conscience, particularly as a read for those of our friends and relatives on the right who actually DO adhere to those oft-trumpeted conservative principles of free thought, limited government, and self-reliance. While I suspect that many Republicans these days are intellectually lazy, I think that the thoughtful ones will read John Dean's book and see how well Dean's book matches reality.

6. Current conservatives are authoritarians
and I am sure many Goldwater Conservatives (like Dean) are wondering how their party got hijacked.
Dean lays it out pretty clearly in this book. His notes and footnotes (and there are many) are fascinating and informative.

7. Reading it now
Dean at the very least is intelligent and articulate. I would definitely say that he makes more sense than 99% of the conservative world.
