Just about finished with God's Problem by Bart Ehrman.

It was a very good read and made me feel so much better about the things I've been thinking about why there is suffering in the world. Hint: The pat response of: Free will doesn't cover it.

I have known so many people who think that God spared them in a catastrophic event, that took the lives of many others, because somehow he had something left for them to do or wasn't finished with them yet. Even when I was a Christian that rankled my nerves because the implication was that the others who didn't survive were unimportant or expendable in the grand scheme of things...oh, but not this person who survived, no sirree bob!

Anyway, what he says does make a lot of sense.

He also goes into people thoughts on the end times here and there through the book and why they are totally wrong.
