Trochenbrod was an entirely Jewish settlement, in what is now Ukraine, founded around 1800. For some time, the settlement survived and flourished, because it was reasonably far from any administrative center and on land that most people did not want. But most inhabitants were murdered by Nazis in 1942, and the town was destroyed

The author heard of Trochenbrod now and then from relatives and finally decided to learn what he could about it. The bulk of his book is a summary history, augmented by a few maps and several dozen photos. Included are a brief post-history, describing (for example) the placement of memorials at mass grave sites, and a handful of narratives by survivors, remembering the town

At first, Trochenbrod was just a tiny row of houses built on empty marshland in the middle of the Radziwill Forest, yet for the next 130 years it thrived, becoming a bustling marketplace where people from all over the Ukraine and Poland came to do business. But this scene of ethnic harmony was soon shattered, as Trochenbrod vanished in 1941—her residents slaughtered, her homes, buildings, and factories razed to the ground. Yet even the Nazis could not destroy the spirit of Trochenbrod, which has lived on in stories and legends about a little piece of heaven, hidden deep in the forest.
