Yes. You can have great music mated to an AWFUL movie.

XANADU

Universal, decided that this little POS gem should get the High Definition remastering treatment before more deserving films, so I sat through it. It's like a train wreck. You know it's bad, but you can't stop watching because there's another good song coming up, with more bad dancing. A story that goes nowhere, and acting so wooden polyurethane can dry on their faces.

Magic is one of ONJ's best/most popular songs, and ELO went a long way to redeeming themsleves from the Disco doldrums of theri Discovery album. Great songs, and danceable. except...

The main actors CAN'T DANCE! ONJ is just serviceable as a dancer. The others (her sisters), are dancing circles around her in every scene. The boy (that Warriors guy) is even worse.

Also...It's a roller skating movie. Now it might be just me, but if you're going to make a roller skating movie, don't you think you should hire actors WHO ACTUALLY KNOW HOW TO SKATE?

but the sound track album was one of my favorites.

helped save Star Trek: The Motion Picture from being a total disaster (although I LOVED the production design).

My dad went with me, and after that I was allowed to go to movies on my own, as long as they were G or PG rated. To this day I'm not sure if that decision was made in recognition of my growing maturity, or if my dad simply wanted to avoid sitting through such an awful movie again.

And it has the Warriors guy! I'd forgotten that. Warriors! Come out and Pla-ay! lol

Gene Kelly was in that movie. Gene Kelly most certainly CAN (could) dance. Love Gene Kelly.

I saw that movie in the theater with my sister and my (young) aunt. I was in jr. high. I remember thinking it was a cool movie. Very fantastical. Of course, I was in JR. HIGH, so what did I know?

I haven't seen the movie since then, but I would love to watch it again just for shits and giggles. And the soundtrack is awesome.

So bad, it's good. And the music kicks ass.

On the other hand, there's John Williams, who seems to copy his previous score for every new film. While his scores are good, he abuses the horn section often. I am also willing to forgive John Barry simply because his lush orchestration for the Bond films. Sentimental faves are exempt.

Even as a kid I realized the movie sucked walnuts but Donna Summer's "Last Dance" was a disco classic.

Now, I'm prepared to be flamed, but, in all honesty, Saturday Night Fever (the daddy of all disco movies), which had a killer soundtrack, and was no dog by any means, looks very dated versus other 70s movies. Yet, the soundtrack is just as enjoyable today as it was back then.
