4. Everything you've mentioned is from 1996 and later minus one album...
I'm sorry, but a great deal of very good music was made before that. If we're talking the greatest ALBUM of all time, which is vastly different than the greatest song, or artist, etc., then look no further than Dark Side of the Moon. It is in it's entirety a masterpiece, yet any individual part is easily beaten by other singles.

The greatest single of all time is easily and undeniably Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Who also happen to be the greatest live gig of all time.

The greatest band is likely the Beatles, though I can't stand them personally.

The greatest artist is probably Elvis whom I also can't stand, but other genres pose other suggestions ranging from Elton John to Cher to Ozzy Osborne and (insert country singer here).

My point is that while we can all have favorites, and we do, I don't think it's possible to name one particular song or band or album as being the best because there are so many different qualities that envoke greatness. Likewise, we could name hundreds that have general qualities that we all agree are great. I take for example the Beatles. I doubt anyone would say that they weren't a phenomenon, but I'm sure there are others who also can't tolerate them. More so, there are songs and bands (etc. et al) that we hold in personal esteem. The song that played when we first danced with our spouse or the first concert we ever went to, etc. I think it's too complex.

I've been saying that for years - "Hey, Jude" is one of the most boring songs ever written.

"Nah, nah, nah, nah, nad-ditty nah ..."

Listen to the song on Moebius' self-named album. A fan digitized it and put it on their blog- here (digging)

http://mutant-sounds.blogspot.com/2008/02/moebius-stlp1979usa.html

It's funny because for YEARS I begged for permission to do this but I couldn't for some weird reason that I just have to accept. But a complete stranger posts his album and he's thrilled!

Not that I'm criticizing your choices or your taste, I'm just voicing my tastes as well, which many times tend into classic rock and out again into it's decedent styles today.

8. When it comes to Queen's the Works, there are so many good songs.

I Want to Break Free just makes my day every time I hear it.

It's a Hard Life is just so silly if you've ever seen the video.

But I'm a Queen snob, I like every album, and nearly every song on each of them. :-)

10. Myself as well.
Never before or since has there been a band, artist, or song which could take you so high and pull you so low as the original Queen did tine and time again.

I Want to Break Free irritates me a bit, not the song at all, but the reception it received in the US. As usual, we never realize what we have until it's gone.

Also I enjoy Who Wants to Live Forever, in some sort of masochistic way I suppose.

17. Totally.

I really enjoy listening to other bands, but nobody hit all the notes like Freddie.

I'm curious to hear the new CD coming out in September with Paul Rodgers. I like that he doesn't pretend to be Freddie. I want to hear Brian's guitar again. And not on a Meatloaf album. :-)

Did you ever have the chance to see Queen live? I never did, but when Queen+Paul Rodgers came to the USA, I spent a boatload of money to see them. Airfare, hotel, rental, food, damn near front row seats, etc. It was magic.

Few bands can release the diverse catalog that they did and have so many good songs in so many different styles.

18. Yeah, nobody will ever have the whole package: vocals, song writing, style, and presence...
Edited on Sun May-04-08 01:34 AM by nothingtoofear
that Freddie had.

I never got to see them live unfortunately. I would've given my right arm to see them at Live Aid in '85 or Wembley in '86, or anywhere really. But, I came onto the scene too late to see them perform in the US. It must have been something.

I've seen most of their biggest shows, thanks in no small part to YouTube and DVD's made in recent years. All of their music videos and most of their biggest shows can be found on YouTube including all of Live Aid and Wembley as well as one in Japan and at least two South American Shows. At least they will be preserved for the next generation. A couple of Queen + Paul Rodgers shows' are on YouTube as well. I was curious when I heard they were touring again (now with him) and cautious. No one could replace Freddie, especially in his own songs, but Paul is a good singer.

If they came out with an album I'd be more interested in him I suppose. When I watch their performance I automatically compare him to Freddie, and I suppose that isn't fair. Personally I've always sort of wanted Brian May to take over lead vocals. He really does have a spectacular voice.

Gosh I'm rambling... the short verson... Freddie = god, Rodgers = good singer, May = my wishful thinking.

21. I loved how they handled Bohemian Rhapsody.
I was very skeptical of how it would go.

But when the piano began, Paul Rodgers walked off stage and they had Freddie on screen singing. It was overwhelming. I lost it at that point, as my brain finally figured out that I'd waited 20 years to see that band, and here I was watching it in a place with other fans.

Being in a small arena with thousands of people singing along was just awesome.

If you haven't seen the We Will Rock You DVD, you should find the remastered one that was done in DTS. I had the original DVD and it was ok. But when they re-released it, I can't believe how good the video quality is for a concert from the early 80's.

I'm looking forward to Blu-Ray concert videos of theirs.

I became a fan too late as well to see them with Freddie. Which is why when I found out that they were coming with Paul Rodgers, I flew across the country to see them. They weren't coming within 1500 miles of me, so I went to Philly to see them at the old Spectrum.

What a great couple of days.

19. Queen's terrible; not as bad as Rush, but worse then Guess Who!
There. I said it. Let the flamers go! It hadda be said.
There's a 'classis rock' station which the warehouse i load up in, is hard wired to: and it's a stomach turning hell-on-earth the hour or so im there in morning, then again in the afternoon. Hideous banshee rock music spoon fed psychos in prison (while doing a stretch years ago, was appalled at the taste in music; and i wasn't alone. But the loudmouth goofs :hide: would scream like babies if the station was ever changed from 'psycho-delic' rock, and in name of peace the duty ohs put it back!) and whoever the hell else listens to it by choice! In Canada, they have 'Canadian Content' rules for public airwwaves, which the Guess Who, Bryan Adams and Rush exploit somehow to get their deathrattles on every music station there is- & for which they collect $ each play! They are beyond awful. (Queen seems to get played alot too. the music is ugly, and they repeat certain tunes several times/day...some here might disagree)
It exacerbates this sense/revulsion that the 'classic rock' station features dj's who are rightwing bush loving pro war boors as nasty as were found in the beer-hall before the putsch, and the hypocrisy never ends. And the fact they occassiobally play Pink Floyd or Steeley Dan etc hardly offsets the crazee dulcet screeches of Geddy Lee etc!

24. i heard Howard Stern diss 'Chicago' once
he mocked their '25 to 6 to 4' single- Stern hated it ....there's a guy who does digital renderings of 'cheesy radio hits' probably for cellph ringtones, and he included Lionel Richie's 'Truly and 'You are the sun' etc, not to mention John Lennon's 'Imagine', on his list!...i've never heard anyone contend that 'Queen' (or Rush for that matter) weren't wonderful, and ...well, you are right, cuz they are very rich, and could easily sell out any forum.......

30. Rush is one of the most under-rated bands ever. They have influenced more musicians than most other
bands. Rush have never gotten the support of radio like other major groups. They just happen to have a very loyal fan-base (of which I belong) who know everything about the band and support them by purchasing everything they release and attending their concerts faithfully. I've been to see them 4 times this tour already. By the way, Geddys voice hasn't been screechy in years.

Being a 13 year old trying to find out who I was as a person, it completely changed my life and shaped my world view. Not their best album, but Nevermind will always me near and dear to me.

26. my Top 25

1. Aphrodite's Child - 666 (1972) The guitar solo on "the four horsemen" is just incredible.

2. Electric Ladyland - Jimi Hendrix

3. Early Instrumentals - Jimi Hendrix (1988) This is a hard one to come by and i only know of it being released on cassette tape. Well worth paying $$$ for.

4. Nine to the Universe- Jimi Hendrix This is another hard one to come by, but it's worth snagging it when it pops up on Ebay.

5. It's only a Movie - Family (1973) Obscure British band but a good one nonetheless.

6. One Live Badger - Badger (1972?) Tony Kaye formed this band after leaving Yes.

7. Midnight Wire - Curved Air (1975) The last incarnation of this British prog-rock band. Pre-Police Stewart Copeland is on the drums.

8. Meddle - Pink Floyd (1971) Precursor of things to come on "The dark side of the moon"

9. Rockin' the Fillmore - Humble Pie

10. Band of Gypsies - Jimi Hendrix "Machine Gun" need i say more?

11. Agents of Fortune - Blue Oyster Cult

12. Strange Universe - Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush (1972) - This one will blow you away. Probably one of the best Guitar players to come out of Canada. According to Frank, Ted Nugent made the mistake of getting into a head cutting contest with him on stage one night and lost quite badly.

13. The Yes Album - Yes - Steve Howe really hits his stride on this album

14. House on the Hill - Audience (1972) Ok, if you have never heard of this obscure Brit Band, go to amazon and buy a copy. You wont regret it!!!!!

15. Close to the Edge - Yes - one song takes up the second side of this album and it's a freaking work of art. Lets see Radiohead try to pull something like this off.

16. Tempest - Tempest (1976) This long out of print album is worth spending some flow on Ebay to obtain it. I belive this was Alan Holdsworths first band. Great rock album.

17. Overnite Sensation - The mothers of Invention

18. Bangin' - The Outfield (1987) - This Brit band allways gets wrote off as a cheesy pop band, but this album will make you think differently

19. Beck, Bogart, and Appice - Man what an album. In my opinion this is some of Jeff Beck's best work.

20. Led Zeppelin 2 - I wore out two cassette copies of this in one summer.

21. Homecoming - America- another band that never gets enough credit

22. Neil Young - Neil Young (1968) His debut album is just fantastic and the song "The old Laughing Lady" Is quite chilling.

23. Raunch and Roll live! - Black Oak Arkansas - a great album from one end to the other!

24. Powerage - AC/DC- "Sin City" need i say more?

25. Coming of Age - The Five Man Electrical Band - From the same band that brought you the song "Signs". This was their second album but due to horrible management and a confused record company whose main business was making toy trains (lionel), it didn't go anywhere.
