McCartney hopes to release funky Beatles track
Source: AP

LONDON – Paul McCartney says it's time an experimental Beatles track saw the light of day.

McCartney says he wants to release "Carnival of Light," a 14-minute experimental track the Fab Four recorded in 1967 but never released.

The band played the recording for an audience just once, at an electronic music festival in London. It reportedly includes distorted guitar, organ sounds, gargling and shouts of "Barcelona!" and "Are you all right?" from McCartney and John Lennon.

McCartney said during a recording session at Abbey Road studios he asked the other members of the band to "just wander round all of the stuff and bang it, shout, play it. It doesn't need to make any sense."

The Beatles are really proving the old adage only the good die young.

19. This is something that was always referenced and it was Paul's,
but from the description this is not a "Yesterday" or a "Hey Jude". It may be that because it is part of what was done and people have spoken of it - it should be public. I don't see the reason for saying "egomaniac". His reputation will stem from songs like Yesterday - and being a Beatle.

theater and is generally considered to be the forerunner to john's "revolution 9". paul was apparently the first in the group to experiement with thr avante garde, tape loops and sound collages. he brought this into the studio for overdubs, finished it, and then handed it over to the theater.

it is a known fact that most of the lennon / mccartney songs were written primarily by one or the other, with the "support" beatle offering a middle eight or a vs here and there to the "primary" beatle. for example, "yesterday" was all paul, "strawberry fields" was all john, "we can work it out" was paul, but john wrote the "life is very short" part, "hey jude" was all paul, but john stopped him from changing the "...on your shoulder" line, which was only meant to be a place marker. like most of their earlier work, "I want to hold your hand" was written "face to face, guitar neck to guitar neck" by the both of them.

george wrote by himself too, but took suggestions from the others.

the dual credit was a purely a political / business thing. paul wrote this one himself.

help from my friends..."

"No, no, no no, I don't do that no more. Got tired of waking up on the floor..."

9. That would be awesome - about time!!!
I hate when mythical stuff like this is successfully kept from the masses.

There's no reason not to release it, or at least leak it!

10. According to the article, the piece was influenced by John Cage and Stockhausen
So it may very well be interesting in that light.

15. LOTS of their stuff
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 12:16 PM by nbcouch
was influenced by Cage and Stockhausen, particularly John's (check out the nearly unlistenable What's the New Mary Jane sometime) ... as songwriters and recording artists, they were great assimilators and synthesizers, in addition to being wildly original at times too. John used to complain that his stuff, especially in the later years, tended to be treated more experimentally, because McCartney never wanted to experiment with his own compositions. It was John's tracks, from Rain and I'm Only Sleeping on through Tomorrow Never Knows and Strawberry Fields and Revolution 9, that featured unusual (at the time) elements like backward guitar and heavily filtered vocals. Not to put him down, necessarily, but Paul was more interested in trying to sound like Little Richard and James Brown than being a free thinker musically.

11. I fear this would be Paul's "Revolution #9"; there's far more desirable stuff...
like a 27 minute version of Helter Skelter, the '64 &'65 Hollywood bowl concerts, 2/3rd's of the White Album songs as acoustic demos, the '63-'69 fan club Xmas records, the "Let It Be" movie on DVD, etc. Carnival of Light wouldn't even be in my top 10 or top 20 wish list for new Beatles product.

IMO, this is just a vanity project for Paul to release to show "hey, I was cool and avant-garde over 18 mos. before John was!"

17. Yeah, but most of that rest of the things on your list are obtainable, no?
Carnival of Light has never even been heard, unless I'm mistaken.

Hell, though, they should release a "Full Disclosure" set or something that puts it all out there.

20. the 27 min. Helter Skelter has never been heard, and the rest are bootlegged
in inferior quality for the most part. The White Album acoustic demos are easily obtainable in fair quality mono versions, but not the excellent stereo quality of the 3 tracks that appeared on Anthology 3. Let it be has been remastered in far better quality than is available on bootleg (again see clips in the Anthology series), but the release has been on hold for years.

16. As a poster whose name is "Nevernose"
I hope this is more "Tomorrow Never Knows" than it is "Revolution 9." The former still resonates with me, but it's been a while since I was in the altered state necessary for "Revolution 9."

18. I will have to hear this, if he does release it.
If I have a religion, it's the Beatles. I mean, I labored through the Cavern Club recordings, I can labor through this! LOL!

21. You probably mean the Star Club recordings, no?
the two Cavern club songs that are available haven't been officially released.

IMO, Carnival of Light, while a curiosity, won't likely hold a candle to the raw energy of the Hamburg Star Club recordings.
