Anybody see the premier of Dollhouse?

I have to say that I was a big fan of Joss Whedon’s Firefly so I saw the
premier of Dollhouse last night.

I thought it was pretty evil.

Other than sexually molesting children, reprogramming people is about the most
evil thing you can do, and this is suppose to be entertaining?

In the show Dollhouse, beautiful women are reprogrammed to be assassins, prostitutes, hostages negotiators for the wealthy, yup, that’s entertainment.

Here is the first episode:
http://www.hulu.com/watch/57885/dollhouse-ghost#s-p1-so-i0

And to top it off, at 7:27 the computer geek who programs the girls gives the devil’s hand signal.

I kid you not.

For those of you who do not know what the devil’s hand signal is, read this entire thread and make up your own mind.

1. Or maybe they just went to the University of Texas.

5. Na, a TV producer is not going let one of his actors give a "shout out" unless

he approves of the message.

At 0.33, in the second video, the old guy flashes Conan the devil's sign as well.

All three of these videos have * nothing * to do with the University of Texas, heavy metal, wife being unfaithful or I love you. Those are the excuses I hear all the time.

13. just as some people worship God and wish to do good, ...
some people worship the the Devil and wish to do harm.

Why is that hard to believe?

Or do you think no one worships the Devil?

As long as they keep it out of my face.

2. Or maybe...
He's supposed to be a heavy metal fan?

I have been hearing that "Devil's Hand Sign" piffle for years, since having worked in the music business and for a lot of metal bands, back in their day. It scares me no end that it should be brought up here.

3. It was ok. But you're reference to the so-called "devil's hand sign" is amusing
You probably don't realize that that gesture has many meaning in different cultures.

Early use is from Eastern Europe - specifically Italy - where it means someone's wife has been unfaithful.

4. I wish I'd seen it.
So I could make up my own mind if it's shock jock filth, veiled shock jock filth, or if Mr Whedon's story incites thought.

There was an episode of "Firefly" ('Shindig' or the one about the train robbery?) where the story involved a subplot regarding prostitution. The way it was written, it elevated the profession. I may not like prostitution as a concept (tarnishes self-worth and dignity), but I was impressed with the maturity accorded that episode and the slur that elevated prostitution; I don't recall what it was (politics?)

Time to re-watch tonight...

8. Yes, but they were exercising their free will to be prostitutes, there is no
way you can spin this type of control as good in this show.

11. I doubt they are trying to spin it as good.
Its looks to be over time as the show progresses Eliza Dushku is suppsoed to escape that big complex that turns people into prostitues/assassins.

15. Yes, I believe that is the point...
It's clear that they are not spinning the Dollhouse as a good thing. There are clearly supposed to be a few sympathetic characters in the organization, e.g. her handler and maybe the doctor, but it seemed to me that none of the other admin types are supposed to be "good guys".

20. One thing I read about it
was that the concept of the Dollhouse and the Dolls was partly meant as an allegory to how hollywood treats aspiring young actresses, a theme that Whedon touched upon in the first season of Angel as well.

25. Dollhouse (and Firefly for that matter) is on Hulu.com.
It's free. (There're a few 30 second commercials in each episode.)

That's where I watch a few of my shows these days. House. Lie To Me. Heroes. And now Dollhouse and a new show I hadn't seen on the tube yet called XIII.

7. I thought it was good
Look, it's supposed to be about a dystopia, or a dystopia-like world like the novel The Handmaid's Tale, the film, "Rain Without Thunder <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_without_thunder>, and others. Yes, dystopia fiction is supposed to be thought-provoking when it was well written, and thus "entertaining", as you put it.

Actually, the world it portrays and ours are so different--here too girls and women are kidnapped and then used as slaves.

10. I liked it.
It wasnt a great pilot but I was interested. Joss Whedon is good at building up characters over time so I think the show can get a lot better.

12. Oh noes! Teh hand signal of de debbil!
Edited on Sat Feb-14-09 02:24 PM by Rob H.
Unless it isn't.

This is the hand signal for "I love you" (shown in the DU thread you linked above). A quick Google search would have told you so..

And yes, I followed the other link in that thread to the "Signs of Satan!" website--my first clue that it was chock full of religious wingnuttery was the claim that Helen Keller was a Satanist. Once that was thrown out there I really didn't feel compelled to read any further, oddly enough.

To be honest, I didn't even notice it when I watched the show last night. Here's a thought: Maybe the computer guy just likes Spider-Man. A computer guy who also likes comic books! Oooh, shocking! :sarcasm:

Oh, and by the way, since you were supposedly watching so closely I'm surprised you didn't notice that there are men who are in the same program Echo is part of, too. They were shown in the background of some scenes and at the very end of the episode when they were all stepping down into sleep chambers for the night. The rogue operative in next week's episode is a man, as well.

Whedon left Fox over Firefly. I'm glad to see him back on t.v.

Your evaluation is so right. Did you see that they used the Devil's Jockstrap at 10:45? Indeed, to what is society coming?!?

Armageddon is nigh. I kid you not!

21. Whedon has character development going for 5 years
and if you check out the Fox site they have additional trailers, edits scenes, and information.

I think Whedon would be interested to hear the Armageddon reference.

22. I fell asleep
the motorcycle race at the beginning was really dumb. I'll give it another chance but the show that comes on FOX right before Dollhouse is way better. And Summer Glau could kick Eliza Dushku's ass.
